Entrevista MAD HATTER; Petter Hjerpe "Cuando tocas Power Metal es difícil no ser comparado con esas bandas... nuestro objetivo es sonar frescos y aún así darle algún tipo de nostalgia."

"Mad Hatter", el "Sombrerero Loco", personaje de ficción de "Alicia en el país de las maravillas" ha sido parte de la fuente de inspiración de esta banda sueca de heavy power, que editaba su álbum debut en Febrero de este mismo año bajo el sello Art Gates Records. Una banda fuertemente influenciada por ese power metal de los 90, de bandas como Sonata Artica o Stratovarius, y esa parte más heavy de otras como Gamma Ray o Helloween, pero aportando su sello, frescura, y dejándonos un excelente trabajo que va a ser uno de los más interesantes de este 2018. Con el vocalista y guitarrista de MAD HATTER, Petter Hjerpe, hablamos de su debut, de sus influencias en general, del concepto teatral y oscuro que les rodea, y de muchas otras cosas...

Es evidente al escuchar este álbum que Mad Hatter esta formado por músicos experimentados que saben lo que están haciendo, y es que la banda sale de las cenizas de Morning Dwell. Que pasó con Morning Dwell?
Morning Dwell ahora es más una banda de estudio o una banda sin plazos ni presión. Si escribimos algún material nuevo, tal vez hagamos algo con él, o tal vez no lo hagamos. Solo somos viejos amigos que nos mantenemos en contacto, como lo hacíamos antes de obtener un contrato. Algunos de los muchachos en Morning Dwell tienen familia o que ir a al trabajo porque la banda está demasiado lejos de ganar dinero, así que no podemos anteponer el trabajo y la familia a la banda.

Lo primero que me llama la atención al poner vuestro primer álbum “Mad Hatter” es la producción, ese sonido limpio…
En Mad Hatter, primero trabajamos con las canciones, antes de buscar una buena producción. Es gracias a Ronny Milianowicz que tenemos este sonido limpio y claro. Él sabe cómo grabar y mezclar. Yo aporte algunas cosas ideas mientras Ronny trabajaba en la mezcla, ya que también grabo y mezclo mucho en casa. Pero en general, la producción de este álbum es todo gracias a Ronny porque es un gran ingeniero.

Vuestro sonido, power metal, viene inspirado por bandas como Helloween, Edguy, o Sonata Artica. Teniendo en cuenta que hay un gran número de bandas de power, y que muchas de ellas no aportan mucho a lo que ya tenemos, que creéis que aporta Mad Hatter?
Siento que tomamos un camino desde la línea del power de principios de los 90 o finales de los 90, y elegimos un tema que realmente no se ha explorado. Es el clásico Power Metal pero con un enfoque más "oscuro/loco". Alicia en el país de las maravillas.

Sinceramente, debo daros la enhorabuena, porque creo que Mad Hatter es de lo mejor que he escuchado en mucho tiempo dentro del heavy power. Por ejemplo, canciones como “Fly Away” me parecen geniales, con un toque Helloween/Gamma Ray brillante, rápida. Lo tiene todo, excelentes guitarras, pegada… Háblame de esta canción.
¡Muchas gracias! Me alegra oír eso! Si, se a que te refieres. El riff de introducción es más típico de Sonata Artica o Strato, con teclados y demás, pero luego se torna mucho más pesada. Pensé que quería hacer que se sintiera como algo pesado rodando hacia adelante. Un poco como Gamma Ray o los viejos Helloween, con Kai en la voz. Primero no canté tan agresivo, pero más tarde sentí que sonaba como todo lo heavy que pretendía. Así que cambié la voz a lo que escuchas ahora. ¡Mucho mejor!
La letra es muy simple. ¡Es más como un impulso del ego! "No tienes maestro, nadie te controla". Se adapta bien a la canción. ¡Aprieta el puño y grita!

“Phantom Riders”, una mezcla entre el sonido añejo de bandas como Helloween y Strtovarius. Otro gran tema. Menciono de nuevo a estas bandas clásicas porque creo que en Mad hatter hay esa parte de frescura y a la vez esencia que les falta a bandas de gran renombre. No se si estas de acuerdo conmigo.
Es bueno escuchar eso porque esa es la misma sensación que comparto contigo. Como compositor crecí escuchando todas esas bandas clásicas, pero siempre quise hacer algo propio. Tengo muy profundo en mi cabeza a todas estas bandas como inspiración, pero siempre tuve mi propia idea de cómo debería sonar mi tipo de metal.

Las criticas que estáis recibiendo son muy buenas, aunque muchas de ellas os comparan con las bandas que hemos mencionado (Helloween, Stratovarius, Sonata Artica…) Estáis satisfechos con estas comparaciones, teniendo en cuenta de que es vuestro primer trabajo?
Cuando tocas Power Metal es difícil no ser comparado con esas bandas. Quiero decir, son la referencia de cómo sonó Power Metal en su mejor momento. Pero nuestro objetivo es sonar fresco y aún así darle algún tipo de nostalgia. Una mezcla entre lo nuevo y lo viejo. ¡Y nuestro objetivo no es inventar algo completamente nuevo sino tocar un buen Power Metal!

Las composiciones están muy cuidadas, quien se encarga de ello y como trabajáis?
Yo. Escribo las canciones en casa y grabo cada instrumento antes de mostrárselos a los demás. Más tarde le envío las canciones a Alfred y él da su propio sonido a la batería. Él es mejor baterista que yo, así que añade mucha profesionalidad al sonido.
Un ejemplo de cómo escribo una canción es que a menudo tengo una idea de solo tocar algunas guitarras o teclados. Luego grabo sólo una parte a la vez, luego escucho la parte que grabé e intento descubrir qué hacer en la siguiente parte de la canción, y así sucesivamente. Introducción, verso o sòlo, por ejemplo.
Luego, simplemente canto con la música e intento encontrar una melodía. Cuando encuentro una melodía que me gusta grabo (a menudo sin letras). Las letras son algo que escribo en el último minuto antes de realmente clavar la canción.

Mad Hatter es uno de los personajes de Alicia en el país de las maravillas, “el sombrerero”, también conocido como “el sombrerero loco”. vuestro nombre esta inspirado en este personaje, por algún motivo especial?
Sí, me gusta leer mucho a Stephen King u otras cosas de ciencia ficción y fantasía. Si es un cuento oscuro me gusta mucho más. Las películas y los juegos también son inspiración. Entonces, cuando escuchas "Mad Hatter" te haces una idea de cómo se ve y en qué historia está, y de lo loco y febril que es su mundo. Así que Mad Hatter es un buen nombre para nuestra banda. Incluye el tema de los cuentos de hadas oscuro que nos gustan y queremos que la gente escuche o sienta.

La portada también me parece un buen punto, con esa imagen un tanto oscuro de El Sombrerero, a lo Jocker, y esa mezcla entre cuento de hadas y siniestra en 

algunos detalles. Que queríais mostrar con ella?
¡Lo has cogido realmente bien! ¡Me gusta! Queremos que las personas sepan lo que tienen cuando vean el disco. La portada es muy importante. Es como la portada de una película o un libro. Te provoca sobre lo que está por suceder. Pero la portada también está sin una respuesta correcta. Está en los ojos del espectador. Quienes vean esta portada que decidan lo que encuentran correcto o incorrecto.

Como surge fichar por el sello Art Gates?
Con Morning Dwell hemos recibido mucha atención underground, especialmente en España. Así que pensamos que Mad Hatter también funcionaría allí.
Art Gates también tenía ideas prometedoras y un enfoque profesional para nosotros. Quieren ayudar a bandas nuevas como nosotros a llegar a algún lado. Primero intentamos lanzar este álbum por nosotros mismos, pero decidimos ir con AGR. ¡Se sintieron bien!
¡Están haciendo un gran trabajo para nosotros hasta ahora! ¡Buen feeling!

Ya tenéis vuestro primer trabajo en la calle, que esperáis que ocurra? Que expectativas tenéis?
No tenemos tan grandes expectativas, realmente. ¡Solo queremos que la gente escuche nuestra música y les guste! ¡Difundir un poco de alegría! Pero también queremos llegar a un público más amplio. Salir de gira y tocar en festivales es un objetivo alcanzable, ¡así que ahí es donde apuntamos!

Planes de futuro… un segundo álbum rápido para mantener una continuidad? Posibles fechas para presentar el álbum fuera de vuestra Suecia
Un segundo disco se hará en el futuro, pero no hay ningún detalle concretado (cuándo o cómo). Solo algunos bocetos en algunas canciones están hechos hasta ahora. Estamos trabajando en el aspecto económico de la banda en este momento. Salir de gira como una pequeña nueva pequeña necesita mucha planificación. Tenemos que conseguir algunos días libres de trabajo, necesitamos encontrar lugares para tocar, autobuses, reservas, comida, equipo, etc. Todavía no hemos creado un presupuesto o un planning para eso. ¡Pero este es, por supuesto, nuestro objetivo el de salir a la carretera muy pronto!

Que le dirías a todos los que están leyendo esta entrevista para que den una oportunidad a vuestro disco?
Si creciste escuchando power metal de finales de los 90 y principios del 2000, te perdiste esa música, ese momento en la vida, pero aún quieres escuchar a una nueva banda, algo nuevo, ¡escucha Mad Hatter! ¡La nostalgia se encuentra en una nueva era!

First of all, thank you very much for sharing this time with us. It is evident that when you listen to this album, Mad Hatter is composed of experienced musicians who know what they are doing and that the band leaves the ashes of Morning Dwell. What happened to Morning Dwell? And, when and why did Mad Hatter emerge?
The pleasure is all mine!

Morning Dwell is now more of a studio band or a band with no deadlines and pressure. If we write any new material we maybe will do something with it or maybe we don’t. We are just some old friends keeping in touch like we did before getting a contract. Some of the guys in Morning Dwell have to prior family and job because the band is too far away from earning any money so we can’t prior the band before job and family.

The first thing that catches my attention when I hear your first album "Mad Hatter" is the production with that clean sound... Have you emphasized this part a lot?
We in Mad Hatter first of all worked with the songs before the good production. It is because of Ronny Milianowicz we got this clean and clear sound. He knows how to record and mix. Me myself(Petter Vocals/Rythm Guitars), had some things to say while Ronny worked on the mix since I also record and mix a lot at home. But as a whole the production of this album is all thanks to Ronny for a great engineering.

Your sound, power metal, is inspired by bands like Helloween, Edguy, or Sonata Arctica. Noting that there is a large number of power bands, and that many of them do not contribute much to what we already have, what do you think Mad Hatter brings?
I feel like we took a path from the early 00’s or late 90’s power-wave and choosed a theme that haven’t really been explored. It’s classic Power Metal but with a darker/”crazy” approach. Alice in wonderland-ish.

Honestly, I must congratulate you because I think Mad Hatter is one of the best I've heard in heavy power for a long time. For example, songs like "Fly Away" seem great to me. It has a bright tint of Helloween and Gamma Ray. It has everything, excellent guitars, catchy ... Tell me about this song.
Thank you very much! Glad to hear that! Yeah, I know what you mean. The intro riff is more typical Sonata/Starto-like with keyboards and stuff but then it crashes into the verse which is much heavier. I thought that I wanted to make it feel like something heavy rolling onward. Little bit like GammaRay or old Helloween with Kai on vocals. First I didn’t sing so aggressive but later I felt that it did sound that heavies I intended. So I changed the vocals to what you hear now. Much better!

The lyric is very simple. It’s more like a ego boost! ”You have no master, no one controlling you”. Fits the song good. Tighten your fist and scream along!

"Phantom Riders", a mix between the vintage sound of bands like Helloween and Stratovarius. Another great track. I mention again these classic bands because I think that in Mad Hatter there is that part of freshness and at the same time essence that bands of great renown lack. I do not know if you agree with me.
Good to hear that because that is the same feel I share with you. As a songwriter I grew up listening to all those classic bands but I always wanted to do something of my own. So deep inside my head I have all these bands as inspiration but I always had my own idea how my kind of metal should sound.

The reviews that you are receiving are very good, although many of them compare you with the bands that we have mentioned (Helloween, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica ...). Are you satisfied with these comparisons even though it is your first album?
When you play Power Metal it’s hard to not be compered with those bands. I mean, they are the reference how Power Metal sounded at it’s prime. But our goal is to sound fresh and still give you some kind of nostalgia. A mix between new and old. And our goal is not to invent something completely new either but to play good Power Metal!

The compositions are very careful, who is responsible for it and how do you work?
I am, Petter Hjerpe. I write the songs at home and record every instrument before showing them to the other guys. Later I send the songs to Alfred and he adds his own sound to the drums. He is such a better drummer then me so he adds a lot of professionalism to the sound.

An example how I write a song is that I often get an idea from just playing some guitars or keyboards. I then record just one part at a time then I listen to the part I’ve recorded and try to figure out what to do in the next part of the song and so on. One part at a time. Intro, verse or solo for example.

Then I just sings to the music and try to find a melody. When Ive found a melody I like I recorded(often without lyrics). Lyrics is something I write in the last minute before really nailing the song.

Mad Hatter is one of the characters of Alice in Wonderland, "The Hatter", also known as "the mad hatter". Is your name inspired by this character for any special reason?
Yeah, I like to read a lot. Like Stephen King or other Sci-fi/Fantasy. If it is a dark tale I like it evan more. Movies and games are also inspiration. So when you hear ”MAD HATTER” you get a picture in your head of how he looks and what story he is in and how crazy and feverish his world is. So Mad Hatter is a good name for our band. It includes the theme of dark fairytales that we like and want people to hear or feel.

Does the character have anything to do with the general concept of your lyrics? There is a certain dark side in some of your songs. Can you comment a little on this concept?
As you mentioned! Mad Hatter represents more the dark themes we are exploring in our songs. But the songs on the album that is called ”Mad Hatter: Become ” and ”Mad Hatter:Shine” are concept songs about the mind of this mad man!

The cover also seems to me a good point, with that same dark image of The Hatter, like the Joker, and that mixture between fairy tale and sinister in some details. What did you want to show with her?
You are getting this completely right! I like it! We want people to know what they get when they see the album. The art is very important. It is like a cover of a movie or a book. It teases you what is about to happen. But the art is also open without a right answer. It is in the eyes of the beholder. The ones who se this art decides what they finds right or wrong.

How does it come about to sign for the Art Gates label?
With Morning Dwell we have gotten a lot of attention underground in especially Spain. So we thought that Mad Hatter will work there as well.

Art Gates also had promising ideas and professional approach to us. They also want to help new bands like us to get somewhere. First we ment to release this album by our selves but decided to go with AGR. They just felt right!

They are doing a great job for us this far! Feels good!

You already have your first album in the market, what do you expect to happen? What expectations do you have?
We don’t have so big expectations, really. We just want people to hear our music and like it! Spread some joy! But we really want to reach a wider audience as well. To get out on a tour and play on festivals is a reachable goal. So that is where we are aiming!

Plans for the future..., a second quick album to prolong continuity? Possible dates to present the album outside of Sweden?
A second album will be done in the future. But nothing more in detail is done(when or how). Just some sketches on some songs are made at this point. We are working on our economy for the band right now. To get out on tour as a new small band needs a lot of planning. We have to get some days of from work, we need to find places to play at, buss, booking, food?, equipment etc. We have not yet built a budget or plan for that yet. But this is of course our goal to get out on the road real soon!

What would you say to everyone who is reading this interview to give your album a chance?
If you grew up listening to late 90’s/early 00’s Power Metal and miss that music and time in life but still want to hear a new band, something fresh, Listen to MAD HATTER!  Nostalgia meets a new era!
