Entrevista EMERALD SUN; "Under the Curse of Silence" es de hecho más pesado y más poderoso. Esa era nuestra intención.

La banda griega de power metal EMERALD SUN presenta en estos días su cuarto trabajo "Under The Curse Of Silence", un álbum más duro y pesado que los anteriores, y para el que han contado con Marcos Rodríguez, productor y guitarra de los alemanes RAGE, de quienes también han contado con Peavy para una de las canciones, apareciendo en el video clip de la misma. Nos pusimos en contacto con su vocalista Stelios "Theo" Tsakirides, un tipo muy simpático, y amante de nuestra lengua, con el que repasamos la actualidad de la banda y profundizamos en su nuevo álbum.

"Under The Curse Of Silence" es vuestro quinto trabajo, el anterior "Metal Dome" se publicó en 2015. Que habéis estado haciendo en este tiempo?
Primero quiero dejar claro algo. Hay algunos otros artículos que también mencionan que este es nuestro quinto álbum, ¡pero es nuestro cuarto álbum! Esto se debe a que el primer álbum "The Story Begins" salió más tarde bajo el título "Escape From Twilight". ¡Pero es el mismo álbum! Entonces, "Under The Curse Of Silence" es nuestro cuarto lanzamiento.

Bueno, en los últimos tres años estuvimos tocando en varios conciertos para promocionar "Metal Dome" en diferentes países de Europa como Alemania, Grecia, Bulgaria, etc. y, por supuesto, escribiendo y arreglando nuevas canciones para el álbum actual.

"Under The Curse Of Silence" ha sido producido por Marcos Rodríguez, guitarra de Rage, que creo a dado fuerza y contundencia al sonido general del disco. Como fue escogerle a él y que creéis que ha aportado Marcos a vuestras nuevas canciones?
¡Marcos es un hermano! Nos conocíamos desde hace unos años, pero era la primera vez que trabajábamos juntos. ¡Y puedo prometer que no ha sido la última!
Marcos no es solo un tipo genial, es un músico increíble y muy talentoso. ¡Toca muchos instrumentos y es un cantante increíble! Trabajar con él fue una experiencia increíble. ¡Marcos hizo un trabajo increíble produciendo también este álbum!
Tenía muchas ideas fantásticas para enriquecer las nuevas canciones y les gustaban todas. ¡Es un placer trabajar con alguien que tiene tantas habilidades, tiene un gran sentido del humor y también es un amigo! También grabé todas las voces en su estudio y también hizo varias voces de acompañamiento. Tío... ¡nos divertimos muchísimo!

En la canción "Blast" habéis contado con el vocalista de RAGE, Peavy Wagner. Como ha sido trabajar con él? Y, porque en esta canción en particular?
Peavy es también un amigo. Estamos muy cerca de los chicos de Rage. Hemos tocado algunas veces juntos además. Entonces, mientras escuchábamos la canción en la preproducción, nos dimos cuenta de que sonaba un poco "Rage". Hablé con Peavy de inmediato y le pregunté si él podría ser parte de esto. Fue un "sí" inmediato y así lo hicimos.

¡Nos sentimos muy honrados de tener a alguien como él en el álbum, además de que triunfa durante más de 30 años en la escena musical! ¡Peavy manda!

Para esta canción también habéis grabado un video. Como ha sido la experiencia?
¡Fue fantástico! Estuvimos grabando durante aproximadamente 10 horas, pero todo el equipo fue tan bueno que casi no notamos cómo pasó el tiempo. Era natural que eligiéramos esta canción en ese segundo single. Peavy también aceptó ser parte del video. ¡Fue simplemente una "explosión"!

Vuestro sonido está enmarcado dentro del power metal. Hay canciones muy potentes y duras, como la mencionada "Blast", más épicas y con potentes coros, como "Weakness And Shame", más pesadas con cierto toque oscuro, como "Carry On"... "Under The Curse Of Silence" me parece un disco muy variado, en el que no se repiten mucho los clichés y habéis sabido crear un disco que para nada es aburrido. Que opinión tenéis vosotros, como definiríais este álbum, y que destacarías con respecto a anteriores trabajos?
Gracias por tus palabras tan amables amigo mío. De hecho, es satisfactorio si alguien reconoce tu propósito. Sí, queríamos crear un álbum con diferentes colores e influencias y si escucho a tipos como tú diciéndome esto... creo que lo hicimos realmente bien.
Ya sabes... estamos orgullosos de todos los álbumes que hemos hecho. Siempre damos lo mejor de nosotros para crear, organizar y grabar. ¡Este álbum es solo el próximo paso de Emerald Sun! ¡Estamos muy contentos con eso!

Porque, escuchando vuestros anteriores trabajos, este me parece menos power y si más heavy. Si es cierto que hay canciones muy power, rápidas... pero también hay más contundencia y pegada... No se si estas de acuerdo conmigo.
"Under the Curse of Silence" es de hecho más pesado y más poderoso. Esa era nuestra intención. También me alegra que lo encuentres pesado. Estoy totalmente de acuerdo. Eso también era algo que queríamos. Crear canciones potentes y pesadas que ya puedas cantar después de la primera escucha.

Me ha gustado como te desenvuelves muy bien en cualquier textura, tiene unos registros muy amplios y ha sabido dar a cada canción el toque que necesitaba...
¡Una vez mas, muchas gracias! ¡Gracias a Dios que no puedes verme sonrojarme! Jajajajaja.
Esta es una pregunta para los otros miembros de la banda, ¡pero no hay nadie por aquí ahora mismo! Pero sí, hice mi mayor esfuerzo con los consejos tan útiles de Marcos, obviamente.

Antes decía que hay canciones con cierto aire oscuro. La portada también me parece algo oscura. No se si el título de "Under The Curse Of Silence" guarda relación con la portada, y letras del álbum en general.
¡Está relacionado! Solo mira a tu alrededor y lo que sucede en el mundo. El planeta entero es inestable. Guerras, crisis, pobreza, personas hambrientas..., todos están mirando pero nadie abre la boca para decir algo o para hacer algo en contra. Es como si la humanidad estuviera "bajo la maldición del silencio" (under the curse of silence). Espero que esto cambie pronto.

"La Fuerza del Ser" es la versión en español de la balada "Journey of Life". Algún motivo en especial?
¡La razón es que amo el idioma español y la mentalidad española! ¡Está muy cerca de nuestro griego! Siempre quise hacer una canción en español, pero nunca tuve la oportunidad. Oye... y ahora que teníamos a Marcos para producir este álbum, le pregunté si escribiría la letra de la versión en español. Como hermano mío, dijo que le encantaría y ¡ese es el resultado!

Y la versión de "Fame", de la famosa serie americana, como escoger esta canción?
De vez en cuando nos gusta hacer covers de canciones de los 80's. Estaba conduciendo hasta el aeropuerto un día y escuché esta canción en la radio. Seguro que ya conocía la canción, pero en ese momento pensé que podría ser una versión de metal realmente increíble. Hablé con el resto de los chicos y estuvieron de acuerdo de inmediato.

Tenéis anunciada una gira junto a Mystic Prophecy y Victorius. Como se presenta este 2018 para EMERALD SUN?
Ya hemos tocado en dos festivales este año y estamos ansiosos por el tour que viene. ¡Es un combo perfecto! Estoy convencido de que a la gente le encantará. ¡Los muchachos de Mystic Prophecy y Victorious son geniales, y estoy seguro de que nos divertiremos mucho juntos!
También hay algunos festivales en camino para el verano y también algunos conciertos más en otoño este año... además de escribir nuevas canciones jajajaja ¡Eso nunca se para!

20 años en funcionamiento, 5 discos... tampoco son muchos. Si echáis la vista atrás, creéis que estáis en el punto que os gustaría? Que cambiaríais?
No cambiaría nada. Todas las experiencias fueron pensadas para ser parte del viaje. No seríamos "Emerald Sun" si cambiaríamos algo del pasado. Estamos felices de la forma en que las cosas nos pasaron y todavía tenemos hambre como cuando estábamos al principio... ¡o tal vez incluso más! Jajajaja

"Under The Curse Of Silence" is your fifth album. The previous "Metal Dome" was released in 2015. What have you been doing at this time?
First I want to set something right. There are some other articles also mentioning that this is our fifth album, but it is our FOURTH! This is because the first album “The Story Begins”.....was later released under the title “Escape From Twilight”. But it is the same album! So “Under The Curse Of Silence” is our fourth release.

Well, In the last three years were playing several shows to support “Metal Dome” in different european countries such as Germany, Greece, Bulgaria etc. and of course writing and arranging new songs for the current album.

"Under The Curse Of Silence" has been produced by Marcos Rodríguez, guitarist of Rage. I think he has given strength and power to sound in all aspects of the record. How was it to choose him and what do you think Marcos has contributed to your new songs?
Marcos is a brother! We knew each other for a few years but it was the first time we worked together. And I can promise it was not the last!

Marcos is not just a hell of a guy, he is an amazing and very talented musician. He plays many instruments and is an incredible singer!!! Working with him was an amazing experience. Marcos did an amazing job producing this album!

He had a lot of great ideas to enrich the new songs and I loved all of them. It´s just such a pleasure to work with somebody who has so many skills, has a grat sense of humor and is a friend too! I also recorded all the vocals in his studio and he also did several backing vocals. Man...we had so much fun!

In the song "Blast" you have had Rage's vocalist, Peavy Wagner. How has it been working with him? Why in this particular song?
Peavy is also a friend. We are very close to the guys from Rage. We played more than a few times together. So as we were listening to the Song in the pre-production we realised that it sounded a bit “Rage-ish”. I talked to Peavy right away and asked him if he would be part of it. It was an immidiate “yes” and so we did it.

We feel really honored to have someone like him on the album who is succesfull for over   30 years in the scene! Peavy rules!!!!

For this song you have also recorded a video. How was the experience?
It was fantastic! We were shooting for about 10 hours but the whole team was so great that we almost did not noticed how time passed by.

It was natural that we choose this song in that second Peavy also agreed to be part of the Video too. It was simply a “Blast”!!!

Your sound is framed as power metal. There are very powerful and hard songs like "Blast". More epic and with powerful choirs like "Weakness And Shame", heavier with a certain dark touch like "Carry On"..."Under The Curse Of Silence" seems to me a very varied album, in which the canons are not repeated much and you have been able to create a record that is never boring. What opinion do you have? How would you define this album? And what would you highlight with respect to previous albums?
Thank you for your kind words my friend. It is satisfying indeed if somebody recognizes your purpose. Yes, we wanted to create an album with different colours and influences and if I hear guys like you telling me this....i think we did really well.

You know....we are proud of all the albums we did. We always gave our best to create, to arrange and to record. This album is just the next step of Emerald Sun! We are very contented with it!

Why, listening to your previous work, this seems less power and more heavy? It is true that there are very powerful and fast songs, but there is also more forcefulness and they are catchy... I do not know if you agree with me
“Under the Curse of Silence” is in fact heavier and more powerful. That was our intention. I´m also glad you find it catchy. I totally agree. That was also something we wanted. To create powerful and heavy songs that you can sing along already after the first listening.

I liked how Stelios works very well in any texture. He has very broad qualities and has been able to give each song the touch he needed...

This is a question for the other members of the band but there is noone around here right now! But...yes I did my best with the helpful advices of Marcos of course!

I said before that there are songs with a certain dark air. The artwork also seems dark to me too. I do not know if the title of "Under The Curse Of Silence" is related to the cover of the album and lyrics in general. Can you tell me about it?

It is related! Just look around what happens in the world. The whole planet is unstable. Wars, crises, poverty, starving people.....everybody is watching but nobody opens his mouth to say something or to do something against it! It is like humanity is “Under The Curse Of Silence”. Hope that this will change soon.

"La Fuerza del Ser" is the Spanish cover of the ballad "Journey of Life". Any special reason?
The reason is that I love the spanish language and the spanish mentality! It is very close to our greek! I always wanted to do a song in spanish but never had the chance. Hey...and now as we had Marcos to produce this album, I asked him if would write the lyrics for the spanish version. As a brother he said he would love to and that´s the result!

And the "Fame" cover of the famous American series, why did you choose this song?
From time to time we like to do covers of 80´s songs. I was driving to the airport someday and heard this song playing on the radio. Sure I knew the song before but in that moment I thought that this could be a really cool metal version. I talked to the rest of the guys and they agreed immidiately.

You have announced a tour with Mystic Prophecy and Victorious. What plans do you have in this 2018 for Emerald Sun?
We already played 2 festivals this year and looking forward to the Tour. It is a perfect package! I´m convinced that the people will love it. The guys from Mystic Prophecy and Victorius are great and i´m pretty sure we will have a lot of fun together!

There also some festivals in progress for the summer and also some more shows in Fall this year.....plus the writing of new songs hahahaha....that never stops!

20 years of career, 5 albums ... that seem not to be many. If you look back, do you think you are at the point that you would like? What would you change?
I wouldn´t change anything. All experiences were meant to be part of the journey. We wouldn´t be the “Emerald Sun” you know now if we would change something in the past. We are happy the way things went for us and still as hungry as we were in the beginning.....or maybe more! Hahahahaha
