Entrevista con David de GRIM TIM: "No somos otra banda retro más"

Los holandeses Grim Tim vendrán por primera vez a nuestro país para presentarnos su nuevo trabajo que salió el pasado mes de noviembre. "Why Do It At All" es un aire fresco a esas influencias de rock más contemporáneas que hacen interesante ver la nueva oleada de nuevas bandas provenientes del norte de Europa con ideas recargadas. Con una combinación funk, rock y aires británicos, la banda ha logrado en su corto tiempo, compartirtablas con nombres como Wolfmother o Birth of Joy. La grabación de su nuevo álbum se finalizó el pasado invierno y contó a los mandos de Martijn Groeneveld en los estudios Mailmen de Utrecht (Holanda).

TNT Radio Rock ha tenido la oportunidad de preguntar acerca de su nuevo disco y empezar a empaparnos de lo que Grim Tim nos ofrece:

- Me gustaría daros las gracias por tener tiempo para TNT Radio Rock y por venir a España con “Why Do It At All”. Me gustaría empezar por el origen. ¿Cómo nace Grim Tim en un país como Holanda?

- Comenzamos como una banda en la escuela secundaria, Dustin (batería) y yo se conocieron básicamente toda su vida y tan pronto como yo comencé a tocar la guitarra, me uní a Dustin en una banda. Después de un año, más o menos, Grim Tim nació a partir de ésto. Desde hace unos años hemos tenido una nueva bestia de bajista (Stijn) y realmente hemos empezado a tomarnos las cosas más en serio.

- 4 años entre vuestros dos álbumes de estudio, pero habéis hecho singles en este tiempo. ¿Cómo han sido estos años entre álbumes?

- Lo pasamos escribiendo canciones y tocando en muchos shows. Entre los que se encontraba Popronde, un festival itinerante de escaparate en Holanda.

- El álbum salió en noviembre a través de LAB Music. ¿Cómo están siendo estos primeros meses con el álbum fuera?

- ¡Va bien y la gente parece estar disfrutando el álbum! Es tan estresante porque pasamos la mayor parte de dos años trabajando para este momento del lanzamiento del álbum. Haciendo las canciones, los videos, material promocional, y planeando todo. Ahora está ya en la calle y fuera del alcance de nuestras manos.

- Habéis trabajado con Martijn Groeneveld para este álbum y ha sido grabado en Utrecht. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso hasta tenerlo terminado?

- La grabación real de las canciones fue súper rápida y eficiente. Pasamos un tiempo relativamente corto en el estudio. Aunque fue muy intenso; acabábamos de salir de un tour larguísimo por lo que nuestra forma de tocar era muy segura y apretada, pero todo el mundo estaba cansado y agotado también.

- Escuchando este nuevo trabajo me han venido rápidamente varios nombres a la cabeza como Bird of Joy, vuestros vecinos DeWolff, QOTSA e incluso, varias bandas alternativas como los inicios de The Strokes o Arctic Monkeys. Por ejemplo en “You Trought This Was Real” es demasiado indie y funk. ¿Cómo surge esta maravilla?

- Creo que es solo el resultado de todos nuestros gustos musicales mezclados juntos. El groove funky es definitivamente la influencia de Dustin, mientras que el lado "indie" probablemente se escucha en la forma de cantar. Es gracioso que digas eso de "You Thought This Was Real", esa canción siempre me ha recordado a los Arctic Monkeys. Pero los tres tenemos gustos musicales variados y creo que eso es lo que hace que Grim Tim sea interesante y no "solo otra banda de rock retro". No estamos interesados en emular el rock clásico, solo queremos hacer música y parece que suena como lo hace. Quien sabe que vendrá...

- Hay una canción que a la primera vez me cautivó. Hablo sobre “Down-and-out Roundabout”. La guitarra hace un trabajo enorme cantando a dúo con la voz y el efecto todo el tiempo. ¡Enhorabuena por ello! ¿Qué podéis contarnos de “Down-and-out Roundabout”?

- Fue una de las primeras canciones "nuevas" de Grim Tim que Dustin y yo escribimos juntas, creo que las escribimos en aproximadamente media hora, toqué ese pequeño y pegadizo riff y la canción surgió sin esfuerzo alrededor de eso. Inicialmente solía cantar junto con el solo de guitarra casi como una broma, pero funciona tan bien que decidimos apoyarnos en ese feeling en la versión de estudio. Es una de nuestras canciones que siempre logra hacer bailar a la gente en nuestros shows. Es divertido, ¡así que por favor baila!

- Elegisteis “Why Do It At All” como primer single del álbum. Además de tener el mismo nombre, ¿qué tiene la canción para que el álbum gire alrededor de ella?

- Es básicamente el plan para este álbum: canciones directas, pegadizas y geniales que no se toman demasiado en serio el tema del rock and roll.

- En países como Holanda, Bélgica, Dinamarca y Suecia están saliendo muchas bandas que defienden el rock clásico, con detalles blues y esa esencia de los años ’70 además del rock and roll clásico. ¿Qué influencias tiene una banda como Grim Tim para hacer “Why Do It At All”?

- Como se mencionó anteriormente, todos tenemos un gusto musical bastante amplio, definitivamente no limitado al rock and roll clásico. Hay una gran cantidad de elementos pop en una canción como “Why Do It At All”, por ejemplo. Es importante no solo tratar de emular la música del pasado, sino tratar de mantenerla contemporánea y fresca.

- ¿Por qué decidís que la portada de “Why Do It At All” sea simple a diferencia de “Satisfriction”?

- Eso es principalmente una decisión de diseño gráfico, a todos nos gustó la idea de mantener todo el enfoque en el título del álbum. El interior del vinilo tiene algunas ilustraciones muy bonitas, pero deliberadamente mantenemos la parte exterior limpia y simple, como por ejemplo Arctic Monkeys en "Suck it and See". Además, el rosa generalmente no se considera un color muy rock 'n roll, así que decidimos hacer todo eso también.

- Vais a estar en España para 10 shows y muchas personas con ganas de ver nuevos talentos. ¿Es vuestra primera vez en España? ¿Qué esperáis?

- Es la primera vez que hacemos conciertos en España como banda, sí. Ninguno de nosotros está seguro de qué esperar, pero solo hemos escuchado grandes cosas sobre el público español de amigos en otras bandas, ¡así que no podemos esperar más!

- I would like to thank you for having time for TNT Radio Rock and for coming to Spain with "Why Do It At All". I would like to start with your origin. How was Grim Tim born in a country like Holland?

- We started out as a high school band, Dustin (drums) and me (guitars, vocals) have known each other basically their whole lives and as soon as I started playing the guitar I joined Dustin in a band, after a year or so Grim Tim was born out of that. Since a few years we’ve had a new beast of a bass player (Stijn) and really started taking things more seriously.

- 4 years between your two studio albums but you have done singles at this time. How have these years been between albums?

- We spent it writing songs and playing a lot of shows. Among which was Popronde, a traveling showcase festival in Holland.

- The album came out in November via LAB Music. How are these first months with the album working?

- It’s going well, people seem to be enjoying the album! It’s so nerve-racking because we spent the better part of two years working towards this moment (the album release); making the songs, the music video’s, promotional material, and planning everything. And now it’s out in the world and out of our hands.

- You have worked with Martijn Groeneveld for this album and it has been recorded in Utrecht. How has the process been until you have it ready?

- The actual recording of the songs was super fast and efficient, we spent a relatively short amount of time in the studio. It was very intense though; we’d just come off a long tour so our playing was super locked-in and tight but everyone was bone-tired and spent as well.

- Listening to this new work I have quickly come to several names in the head as Bird of Joy, your neighbors DeWolff, QOTSA and even, several alternative bands as the beginnings of The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys. For example, "You Trought This Was Real" is too indie and funk. How does this wonder come about?

- I think it’s just the result of all our musical tastes mixing together. The funky groove is definitely Dustin’s input, while the “indie” side of it is probably heard in David’s singing. It’s funny you say that about “You Thought This Was Real”, that song has always reminded me of the Arctic Monkeys. But all three of us have varied musical tastes and I think that’s what makes Grim Tim interesting and not ‘just another retro-rock band’. We’re not interested in emulating classic rock, we just want to make music and it happens to sound the way it does. Who knows what’s next.

- There is a song that captivated me the first time. I talk about "Down-and-out Roundabout" The guitar does an enormous work singing a duet with the voice and the effect all the time. Congratulations for it! What can you tell us about "Down-and-out Roundabout”?

- It was one of the first ‘new’ Grim Tim songs Dustin and I wrote together, I think we wrote it in about half an hour, I played that catchy little riff and the song just sort of very effortlessly popped up around that. Initially I used to sing along with the guitar solo as almost a sort of joke, but it works so well we decided to really lean into that vibe on the studio version. It’s one of our songs that always manages to make people dance at our shows too. Which is fun, please dance.

- You chose "Why Do It At All" as the first single from the album. In addition to having the same name, what does the song have so that the album revolves around it?

- It’s basically the blueprint for this album: tight, catchy, groovy songs that don’t take the whole rock ’n roll thing too seriously.

- In countries like Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden, many bands are coming out that defend classic rock, with blues details and that essence of the '70s as well as classic rock and roll. What influences does a band like Grim Tim have to do "Why Do It At All"?

- As mentioned before, we all have a pretty broad musical taste, definitely not limited to classic rock and roll. There’s a lot of pop elements in a song like “Why Do It At All’’ for example. It’s important to not just try to emulate music from the past but try to keep it contemporary and fresh.

- Why do you decide that the cover of "Why Do It At All" is simple unlike "Satisfriction"?

- That’s mainly a graphic design decision, we all just liked the idea of keeping all the focus on the title of the album, the inside of the gatefold vinyl has some beautiful artwork in it, but we deliberately kept the outside clean and simple, like for example Arctic Monkeys’ Suck it and See. Also: pink is not generally considered to be a very rock ’n roll colour, so we decided to go all out on that too.

- You will be in Spain for 10 shows and there will be many people wanting to see new talent. Is it your first time in Spain? What do you expect?

- It’s our first time doing shows in Spain as a band, yes. None of us are sure what to expect but we’ve only heard great things about Spanish audiences from friends in other bands, so we can’t wait!
