Entrevista con ABLAZE antes de su gira por España

8 fechas como 8 soles son las que la banda australiana tendremos en España. Desde el 13 hasta el 21 de noviembre estaremos rodeados de Ablaze para poder disfrutar de lo que «No Chaser» nos enseñó hace un año. En 2018 llegó «No Chaser«, su primer álbum. 12 canciones que superaron todas las expectativas de crítica y público. Tras tantas fechas en Australia, les tendremos en España de la mano de Lestrato como siempre apoyando a la escena más pura y combativa del rock.

Desde TNT Radio Rock hemos tenido la oportunidad de hacer algunas preguntas antes de que la banda empiece su travesía por España el próximo miércoles.

• Ablaze es una “nueva” banda para los que vivimos en España y por eso la primera pregunta es obligatoria. ¿Cómo empezó Ablaze?
• Originalmente, Ablaze estaba formado por un grupo de compañeros, recién salidos de la escuela secundaria y con ganas de hacer un poco de rock and roll australiano. Tocábamos covers durante un tiempo, nos aburrimos, comenzamos a escribir canciones nuestras, ¡y el resto es historia!

• Escuchando vuestro primer álbum, “No Chaser”, me encanta la mezcla de rock y hard rock, sobretodo la unión de las dos guitarras de Matt y Ben. No os conocía anteriormente y os digo que me ha encantado conoceros musicalmente. ¿Cómo definiríais “No Chaser”?
• Nos gusta pensar que hay algo para todos en 'No Chaser'. Hay canciones de fiesta, canciones de cabreo, canciones tristes, pero finalmente todo está en llamas, ¡incluso las canciones difieren un poco en estilo, contenido o incluso género! El nombre 'No Chaser' proviene de la idea de que es un golpe fuerte de rock, sin tonterías; como un trago de tu whisky favorito sin nada más para suavizar el golpe.

• El álbum salió en 2018 y después de un año, ¿cómo ha funcionado? ¿Esperabais estar de gira por Europa un año más tarde?
• Hemos tenido una respuesta enorme y muy positiva con 'No Chaser' y llegar a Europa siempre ha sido el plan. Australia es un trabajo muy duro para los nuevos y bandas que prometen en el rock de allí, pero Europa tiene una escena de rock próspera y nos encanta.

• En “Kings & Queens” el bajo de Dave parece una metralleta. Tengo que decir que es de mis canciones favoritas de vuestro álbum. ¿Cómo surgió “Kings & Queens”?
• En Australia, hay muchas personas que intentan aprovecharse de las bandas jóvenes: te prometen el mundo, luego te entregan un atlas (¡y te hacen pagar por ello!). La letra de 'Kings & Queens' se basa en una experiencia que tuvimos con este tipo de personas al principio de la historia de la banda. El riff en sí comenzó en un viaje de escritura donde, después de una gran noche de bebida (y en medio de una resaca de monstruos), Danny estaba jugando con una guitarra y simplemente sucedió. Rechazamos algunas ideas (después de que todos volviéramos a la vida) y nació la canción.

• Una de las cosas que me han llamado la atención es la voz de Danny en canciones como “Just a Taste”. Además de esas voces de fondo que consiguen que la canción sea una explosión. Jodida canción de directo. ¿Cuáles son los referentes en la voz para Danny?
• Muchos de los cantantes que inspiran a Danny no son necesariamente cantantes como él, pero artistas como Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder y Gene Simmons han ayudado a Danny a moldear la forma en que usa su voz.

• Tenemos “The Darkest Day”. Una canción de 7 minutos que no es lo normal en un álbum de rock and roll. Además, empieza con esa parte acústica y sentimental. ¿Sobre qué habláis en esta canción? Inmediatamente me recuerda a “November Rain” de Guns’N’Roses.
• 'The Darkest Day' fue escrita en 2012 por nuestro baterista Mango como una forma de superar un período muy oscuro en su vida. Aunque a la banda le encantó la canción, se tomó la decisión de guardarla para el álbum y cuando llegó el momento de grabar 'No Chaser', la banda decidió hacer algunos cambios ya que nuestro estilo de composición y nuestra capacidad habían evolucionado mucho desde entonces. Dave en particular fue clave en mezclar la dinámica durante la canción y hacer que una canción de más de 7 minutos no cansara demasiado, sino que sea un verdadero viaje para el oyente.

• En el aspecto musical, ¿cuáles son las influencias de la banda? Escuchando el álbum creo que hay bandas como Kiss, Massive, Airbourne, la guitarra de Slash…
• Los cinco miembros de la banda están influenciados por diferentes estilos y bandas. Ben está influenciado por los ritmos y riffs de Audioslave y Red Hot Chili Peppers. Danny está más influenciado por The Beatles, Chuck Berry y Nirvana. Matt está influenciado por bandas como Megadeth, AC/DC y Pantera. El estilo de Dave está más influenciado por bandas como Guns 'n Roses y Green Day. Mango está inspirado en Alter Bridge, Chickenfoot, Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators y Alter Bridge.

• Lo primero que pensamos sobre una banda de rock de vuestro país es en AC/DC pero no todo es AC/DC en Australia. ¿Cómo consigue una banda como Ablaze tocar en Europa? ¿Es muy difícil el camino?
• Las bandas australianas se divierten mucho en Europa, ya que aquí hay mucho amor por el rock australiano. ¡Nunca hemos tocado en España antes pero no podemos esperar más!

• Una banda joven como vosotros necesita hacer shows, hacer álbumes, tocar… ¿Cómo es vuestro horario en 2020?
• Estamos planeando hacer algunas fechas en Australia cuando regresemos, ¡y lo más probable es que comencemos a escribir el próximo álbum!

• En este tour por España estaréis por todo el país en 8 shows. ¿Qué esperáis de este tour por España? ¿Con qué opinión queréis volver a Australia?
• ¡Hemos escuchado cosas maravillosas sobre España y que os encanta el rock and roll y esperamos con ansias celebrarlo con vosotros!

• First of all, thank you very much for your time and thank you for this amazing album, “No Chaser”. Ablaze is a “new” band for those of us who live in Spain and the first question is the typical one. How did Ablaze start?
• Ablaze was originally formed by a group of mates, fresh out of highschool and wanting to belt out some riff-driven Aussie pub rock'n'roll. We jammed covers for a while, got bored, started writing originals, and the rest is history!

• Listening to your first album, "No Chaser", I love the mix of rock and hard rock, especially the union of the two guitars of Matt and Ben. I didn't know you before and I tell you that I loved meeting you musically. How would you define "No Chaser"?
• We like to think there's something for everyone on 'No Chaser'. There's party songs, angry songs, sad songs, but ultimately it's all Ablaze - even if the songs differ a little bit in style, content or even genre! The name 'No Chaser' comes from the idea of it being a hard hit of rock, with no bullshit; just like a shot of your favourite whiskey without anything else to soften the blow.

• The album came out in 2018 and after a year, how has it worked? Did you expect to be on tour in Europe a year later?
• We have had a huge and very positive response to 'No Chaser' and getting to Europe has always been the plan. Australia is very hard work for up and coming rock acts but Europe has a thriving rock scene and we love it.

• In "Kings & Queens" Dave's bass looks like a submachine gun. I have to say that it is one of my favorite songs from your album. How did “Kings & Queens” come about?
• In Australia, there are plenty of people trying to take advantage of young bands - they'll promise you the world, then hand you an atlas (and make you pay for it!). The lyrics for 'Kings & Queens' are based off of an experience we had with these kinds of people early in the band's history. The riff itself started in a writing trip where after a huge night of drinking (and in the midst if a monster hangover) Danny was fooling around with a guitar and it just kind of happened. We bounced a few ideas around (after we'd all come back to life) and the song was born.

• One of the things that caught my attention is Danny's voice in songs like "Just a Taste." In addition to those background voices that make the song a blast. Fucking live song. What are the referents in the voice for Danny?
• A lot of the singers that inspire Danny are not necessarily singers he sings like, but artists like Jimmy Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder and Gene Simmons have helped Danny shape the way he uses his voice.

• We have "The Darkest Day." A 7-minute song that is not normal in a rock and roll album. Also, start with that acoustic and sentimental part. What are you talking about in this song? It immediately reminds me of "November Rain" by Guns’N’Roses.
• 'The Darkest Day' was written way back in 2012 by our drummer Mango as a way of getting through a very dark period in his life. Although the band loved the song, the decision was made to save it for the album and when it came time to record 'No Chaser', the band decided to make some changes as our writing style and ability had evolved a lot since then. Dave in particular was instrumental in mixing up the dynamics across the song and making a 7+ minute song not drag, but rather be a real journey for the listener.

• In the musical aspect, what are the influences of the band? Listening to the album I think there are bands like Kiss, Massive, Airbourne, Slash's guitar...
• All five members of the band are influenced by different styles and bands. Ben is influenced by the grooves and riffs of Audioslave and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Danny is moreso influenced by The Beatles, Chuck Berry and Nirvana. Matt in influenced by bands like Megadeth, AC/DC and Pantera. Dave's style is more influenced by bands like Guns 'n Roses and Greenday. Mango is ispired by Alter Bridge, Chickenfoot, Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators and Alter Bridge.

• The first thing we think about a rock band from your country is AC/DC but not everything is AC/DC in Australia. How does a band like Ablaze play in Europe? Is it very difficult to be in Spain for example?
• Australian bands have a great time in Europe as there is a lot of love for Aussie Rock over here. We've never played Spain before but we can't wait!

• A young band like you needs to have shows, make albums, play... How is your schedule in 2020?
• We are planning to do some dates across Australia when we get back, and most likely start writing the next album!

• On this tour of Spain you will be throughout the country in 8 shows. What do you expect from this tour of Spain? With what opinion do you want to return to Australia?
• We've heard great things about Spain and that you love your rock n' roll and we look forward to partying with you!
