THE ERKONAUTS; "...trabajamos más en encontrar una música que disfrutemos. La diversión tiene que ser una gran parte de la ecuación" - Entrevista

Gran sorpresa la que me he llevado con esta banda suiza llamada The Erkonauts y que nace de las cenizas de la desaparecida Sybreed. Su segundo álbum me llamó la atención que en su hoja de promo hacían alusión a que les llaman “los Motorhead del metal progresivo” por lo que me decidí a empezar la escucha del disco, que han titulado “I Shall Forgive” y que edita el sello Indie Recordings el 10 de Noviembre de este 2017. Fantastico trabajo donde bajo la esencia del metal progresivo dan rienda suelta a otros estilos que van desde el punk y el thrash al funky o el swing, en una colección de canciones que están llenas de frescura y energía, algunas con una base contundente, otras con un sonido más corrosivo o agresivo. Una de las sorpresas de este 2017!. Y que mejor que hablar con su bajista y vocalista Ales Campanelli para conocer mejor a The Erkonauts?.

Sorprendido ante vuestro segundo disco "I Shall Forgive". Esa mezcla de metal progresivo, ese sonido corrosivo de guitarras y voz, marcado por esa etiqueta de los Motorhead del metal progresivo, que me parece muy acertada. Enhorabuena por este álbum. Os ha costado mucho esfuerzo llegar hasta su culminación?
¡Muchas gracias! El álbum definitivamente nos costó mucho esfuerzo. Tratamos de mantener nuestra música lo más espontánea posible, mientras le prestamos gran atención a los detalles. Las cosas deben hacerse lo suficientemente rápido para que la sensación inicial no se pierda cuando arreglemos la canción. Es un proceso. Realmente no pensamos en el tipo de música que tenemos que tocar, pero trabajamos más en encontrar una música que disfrutemos. La diversión tiene que ser una gran parte de la ecuación.

No había escuchado antes a The Erkonauts, y cuando llevaba las dos primeras canciones del disco, “Little Mary” y “Seven Macaw”, me dije… “joder, de donde salen estos tíos?”. Son dos canciones intensas, muy directas que, en mi opinión reúnen todos o casi todos los elementos que nos encontraremos a los largo de las nueve canciones. Una buena carta de presentación, no sé si estáis de acuerdo…
Bueno, estas son palabras realmente amables, ¡así que realmente quiero estar de acuerdo con ellas! Escoger el orden de las canciones siempre es una tarea ardua y requiere mucha atención. Pero "Little Mary" rápidamente se convirtió en una fuerte candidata para el primer puesto. Al final iba a ser esta o "The Groove of the Sorry". Pusimos “Seven Macaw” en segundo lugar porque, ya lo dijiste, "Mary" y este son una buena muestra de lo que está por venir.

Vuestro sonido está basado en el metal progresivo, con una fuerte influencia de rock corrosivo muy clásico, con partes muy rápidas, con voces limpias y agresivas, guiños a otros sonidos como el thrash, punk... La vena de Lemmy está ahí, pero cuales son vuestras influencias más directas?
¡Bueno, hay mucho de lo que acabas de decir! Personalmente, escucho muchas cosas. Si tuviera que escoger una preferencia, probablemente sería algo de los 70. Bandas como Scorpions, Led Zeppelin, Queen... De vez en cuando tocamos una versión de Uriah Heep. Estas bandas tenían una forma de explorar la música con la capacidad de crear un sonido muy distinto. Esto tiene un gran impacto en nosotros. Tratamos de explorar tanto como podamos incluir en nuestro sonido, tantas influencias como podamos. Hay mucho que aprender de ahí afuera. En estos días, es muy común poder identificar con precisión las 2 o 3 bandas que influyen directamente en algunos de los artistas recientes, y creo que es un poco triste. A la gente parece gustarle lo que ya sabe y las bandas quieren sonar exactamente como sus bandas favoritas.

Habéis contado con Drop de Samael para la producción. Algún motivo especial para escogerle?, que creéis que aporta a vuestro sonido?
Drop toca con Kevin y conmigo en Sybreed mucho antes de que The Erkonauts incluso existiera. Somos amigos cercanos, vivimos en la misma ciudad, todavía hacemos música juntos y él es un gran productor. Así que, sinceramente, no había mucho en qué pensar. Él fue la elección obvia. Su trabajo en "I Did Something Bad" fue genial, y creo que lo impulsó aún más con "I Shall Forgive". Definitivamente contribuyó al álbum. Sobre todo mientras grabábamos las voces, me hizo probar muchas cosas diferentes para superar mis límites. Trabaja a través del dolor. En algunas canciones, como Cacoit o Seven Macaw, realmente puedes escuchar el sufrimiento en mi garganta.

Sobre eso quería preguntarte, la grabación de la voz leí que fue muy dura. Cuéntanos un poco como ha sido el proceso para "I Shall Forgive".
Mientras grabamos con The Erkonauts, nos gusta experimentar con voces. Tengo una idea general de hacia dónde voy con las líneas principales, y muchas (generalmente demasiado) de las letras, pero la mayor parte de la organización se hace en el estudio. Es arriesgado y estresante, pero le da un toque muy auténtico y sincero al resultado final. Así que para I Will Will Forgive, hubo días y noches de prueba y errores continuos. Esto realmente tomó un peaje de mis cuerdas vocales. A veces las empujamos hasta un punto en que fue completamente destructivo, y fue entonces cuando grabamos las tomas finales. Fue realmente doloroso, pero principalmente gratificante. Me sentí invencible durante el proceso, y siento que ya di todo de mi parte. Así que la tos y la sangre valieron la pena.

Desde hace algunas semanas se han podido escuchar canciones de este álbum como “Seven Macaw“, “Chaos Never Fails To Appeal”, y ahora “Little Mary”, como está siendo la reacción del público. ¿Qué impresiones os está dejando?
Hasta ahora, las reacciones son realmente positivas. También tocamos estas canciones en vivo con excelentes resultados. Con una banda como la nuestra, siempre existe el riesgo de que algunas personas no lo encuentren exactamente como se sienten cómodos, pero los trolls son honestamente bastante raros. No podemos esperar para ver cómo se percibirá el álbum completo. Nuestro guitarrista Bakdosh hizo el video de "Little Mary" y recibió muchos elogios.

Formados en 2014, en apenas 3 años tenéis 2 discos y habéis tocado en países de casi todo el Mundo en 2 ocasiones, lo que no está nada mal. 2016 ha sido un gran año para vosotros No tenéis la sensación de ir muy rápidos?
¡Nos gustaría hacer mucho más! Pero sí, estamos extremadamente agradecidos por todas las oportunidades que tuvimos desde nuestra creación. También hay una parte de la suerte que no debe subestimarse. Pero sí, las giras son la razón por la que existen las bandas, así que estamos contentos de que hayan llegado tantas oportunidades en tan poco tiempo. Realmente esperamos que crezca con el tiempo.

Habéis fichado con el sello Indie Recordings, que creéis que os aporta y que esperáis de ellos?
Tienen experiencia,  y un catálogo asesino. Entonces la pregunta que realmente me estoy haciendo a mí mismo es "¿qué esperan de nosotros?" Recogieron nuestro álbum después de que Kaotoxin tuvo que parar, y esto nos dio un gran impulso moral desde el principio. Discutimos muchas cosas con ellos y realmente parecen preocuparse por nosotros. Entonces, esperamos que esta relación nos lleve a algo grandioso.

Que esperéis de 2018 con vuestro nuevo álbum ya en la calle? Cuales son vuestros planes de futuro?
Estamos trabajando en más tours! Este será el objetivo principal para 2018. Hay algunos intereses para Europa, Estados Unidos y Asia, así que veremos a dónde nos lleva esto. España sería increíble!

I'm surprised at your second album "I Shall Forgive". That mix of progressive metal, that corrosive sound of guitars and voice, fixed by that label of the “Motorhead of progressive metal”, which I think is very successful. Congratulations for this album. Has it cost you too much effort to reach its culmination?
Thank you very much! The album definitely took a lot of effort. We try to keep our music as spontaneous as possible, while paying great attention to details. Things have to be done fast enough so the initial feeling isn’t lost when we arrange the song. It’s a process. We don’t really think about the kind of music that we have to play, but work more on finding a music we will enjoy. Fun has to be a huge part of the equation.

I had not heard The Erkonauts before, and when I heard the first two songs, "Little Mary" and "Seven Macaw," I said to myself ... "Fuck, where are these guys coming from?" They are two intense songs. Very direct songs, which, in my opinion, have all or almost all the elements that we will find throughout the nine songs. A good cover letter, I do not know if you agree...
Well these are really kind words so I really want to agree with them! Picking the song orders is always a chore and requires a lot of attention. But “Little Mary” rapidly became a strong contender for the opening spot. In the end it was either going to be this one or “The Groove of the Sorry”. We put “Seven Macaw” in second place because, has you have said, Mary and this one give a very good first taste of what is coming.

Your sound is based on progressive metal, with a strong influence of very classic corrosive rock: with very fast parts, with clean and aggressive voices, winks at other sounds like thrash, punk ... Lemmy's vein is there, but What are your most direct influences?
Well there is a lot of what you just said! Personally, I listen to a lot of stuff. If I had to pick a preference, it would most likely be stuff from the 70s. Bands like Scorpions, Led Zeppelin, Queen…We actually play a Uriah Heep cover from time to time! These bands had a way of exploring music with the ability come up with a very distinct sound. This has a huge impact on us. We try to explore as much as we can include to our sound as many influences that we can. There is a lot to learn from out there. I find it very common these days to be able to identify precisely the 2 or 3 bands the influence directly some of the recent artists, and I think it’s a little sad. People seem to like what they already know and bands want to sound exactly like their favourite bands.

You have worked with Drop of Samael for the production. Any special reason to choose him? What do you think it contributes to your sound?
Drop played with Kevin and I in Sybreed way before The Erkonauts even existed. We are close friends, live in the same city, still do music together and he is a great producer. So honestly there wasn’t much to think about. He was the obvious choice. His work on “I Did Something Bad” was great, and I think he pushed it further with “I Shall Forgive”. He definitely contributed to album. Mostly while we were recording the vocals, he got me to try a lot of different things to push my limits. Work through the pain. In some songs, like Cacoit or Seven Macaw, you can really hear the suffering in my throat.

I have read that the recording of the voice has been very hard. Tell us a little about the process for "I Shall Forgive".
While recording with The Erkonauts, we like to experiment with vocals. I have a general idea of where I’m going with the main lines, and a lot (generally too much) of lyrics ready, but most of the arranging will be done in studio. It’s risky and stressful, but it gives a very authentic and sincere touch to the final result. So for I Shall Forgive, there were days and night of continuous trial and error. This really took a toll of my vocal chords. Sometimes we pushed it to a point where it was completely destroyed, and that’s when we recorded the final takes. It was really painful, but mostly rewarding. I felt invincible during the process, and I feel that I gave it my all now. So the coughing blood and headaches were well worth it.

For some weeks they have been able to listen to the songs on this album like "Seven Macaw", "Chaos Never Fails To Appeal", and now "Little Mary", how is the public's reaction? What impressions do you have?
So far the reactions are really positive. We also played these songs live with great results. With a band like ours, there’s always the risk that a few people will not find it corresponding exactly to what they are comfortable with, but trolls are honestly rather rare. We can’t wait to see how the álbum will be perceived as a whole. Our guitar player Bakdosh made the video for “Little Mary” and received nothing but praise.

Formed in 2014, in just 3 years you have two albums and you have played in countries almost all over the world twice, which is not bad. 2016 has been a great year for you. Do not you have the feeling of going very fast?
We would like to do so much more! But yeah we are extremely grateful for all the opportunities we had since our creation. There’s a part of luck also that should not be underestimated. But yeah, touring is why bands exist, so we’re glad that so many opportunities arrived in such a short time. We really hope it will grow with time.

You have signed with the Indie Recordings label, what do you think that brings you and what do you expect from them?
They have experience, know how and a killer catalogue. So the question I’m really asking myself, is “what do they expect from us”! They picked up our album after Kaotoxin had to stop, and this gave us a great moral boost right from the start. We discuss many things with them and they really seem to care about us. So we hope this relationship will lead to something great.

What do you expect from 2018 with your new album already on the street? What are your future plans?
We are working on more tours! This will be the main objective for 2018. There are some interests for Europe, USA and Asia, so we’ll see where this takes us. Spain would be awesome!
