THE BLACK DHALIA MURDER; "finales de mayo, prepararemos el material para entrar al estudio en junio y comenzar el proceso de grabación" Alan Cassidy

A finales de Abril, los norteamericanos THE BLACK DHALIA MURDER pasaran por Pamplona (25), Madrid (27) y Barcelona (28), dentro del tour europeo que encabezaran presentando su último trabajo "Nightbringers". Vienen de tocar en el 70,000 toneladas de metal, han girado con Cannibal Corpse, están preparando nuevo material para un próximo disco... Era un buen momento para hablar con la banda... Hablamos con el batería Alan Cassidy, y esto es lo que nos cuenta.

Ya estuvisteis el pasado año (marzo) junto a Cannibal Corpse por nuestro pais presentando vuestro último trabajo "Nightbringers". Como fueron acogidas entonces vuestras nuevas canciones? qué sensaciones os dejaron esos conciertos?
Creo que tuvimos una gran acogida por el nuevo material, y para abrir para una banda como Cannibal Corpse necesitas un buen material pesado. Debemos haber hecho algo bien porque a la gente parecía encantarle. Definitivamente nos hizo sentir que nuestro arduo trabajo en escribir este nuevo material valió la pena.

Ahora llegáis como cabezas el próximo mes de abril, dentro de un tour por toda Europa. Como se presenta esta gira para vosotros, que expectativas tenéis?
Vamos a muchos lugares a los que no visitamos con regularidad, como Escandinavia, Rusia, Estonia e Irlanda, y creo que esto va a atraer a muchos fans que han estado pidiéndo vernos desde hace tiempo. Debería ser un gran tour, emocionante y enérgico por eso. También estaremos tocando en muchos festivales grandes con muchas otras grandes bandas, lo que también ayudará a sacar a muchos de nuestros fans.

Os acompañarán Virvium. Los habéis escogido vosotros, o es algo que os ponen desde las compañías? Que sabéis de ellos?
Hemos tocado en Europa con ellos antes y son tíos increíbles con música increíble, así que será genial que se abran para nosotros nuevamente.

"Nightbringers" ha significado un punto importante en vuestra carrera. Como lo veis casi año y medio después de su lanzamiento?
Creo que ha sido divertido tocar estas canciones mucho. Hay un montón de grandes sensaciones para todo. Groove, velocidad, pesadez, melodías pegadizas... Es sólo un montón de agarrarse a la roca y con lo que creo como un buen vino su cada vez mejor con la edad y cuanto más se abusa de la cantidad que use de ella la más divertido que tiene.

Un cambio significativo en The Black Dahlia Murder fue la incorporación de Brandon Ellis como guitarra. Que aportó a "Nightbringers", y que aporta a la banda?
Él ha sido un gran empuje y ayuda a la hora de escribir el álbum. Aporta muchas influencias de la vieja escuela a las canciones y algunas ideas melódicas realmente creativas, con los riffs y solos. Entró y se hizo cargo del lugar de Ryan Knight a la perfección. Sus estilos de escritura para solos y canciones son muy similares, pero diferentes entre sí en términos del uso de vibrato con solos y progresiones melódicas, muy fuera de lo que escriben, tanto para solos como para riffs. Ha traído muchas ideas nuevas a la banda, así como la energía de generar ideas continuamente, lo cual es muy esencial para una banda que ya ha sacado 8 álbumes.

En Mayo haréis un mini tour junto a Meshuggah por Estados Unidos. Los suecos son toda una institución dentro del metal progresivo. Que significa para vosotros tocar junto bandas tan importantes como esta, o Cannibal Corpse el pasado año?
Es un honor increíble poder abrir para cualquiera de ellos, pero estamos especialmente entusiasmados con Meshuggah, porque solo hemos llegado a tocar con ellos en festivales en los que probablemente estamos en escenarios separados. Ser destacados en sus shows es un gran cumplido para nosotros porque son una banda tan fuerte, única y de gran peso, que tiene toneladas de seguidores, y tocan en grandes escenarios, y si podemos ser elegidos para abrir para ellos, debemos estar haciendo algo bien con ellos. escribiendo y actuando. Creo que todos estamos entusiasmados por simplemente pasar el rato con nuestros ídolos musicales, y ser considerados colegas suyos tocando en conciertos con ellos.

Lleváis muchos meses de giras y conciertos, no se si esto os deja tiempo y espacio para ir componiendo nuevo material para un próximo disco. Entra en vuestros planes actuales o inmediatos?
Oh sí, definitivamente! Ya hemos escrito la mayoría de la nueva música, pero continuaremos escribiendo y terminando de componer el álbum durante los próximos 2 meses de gira, y luego, cuando lleguemos a casa a mediados o finales de mayo, prepararemos el material para entrar al estudio en junio y comenzar el proceso de grabación. ¡así que el próximo álbum está en camino!

Casi 20 años de carrera y 8 discos de estudio. Para una banda de death metal no está nada mal. Cuándo empezabais con los primeros ensayos, esperabais poder a llegara a tocar por todo el mundo, junto a bandas que han sido influencia para vosotros?
Como miembro no original, no puedo responder a esto como Trevor o Brian, pero estoy seguro de que todos estamos constantemente emocionados y asombrados de poder tocar con todas estas bandas que hemos estado escuchando durante años. Acabamos de hacer el crucero de 70,000 toneladas de metal y fue una experiencia increíble. No creo que nadie en nuestra banda, ni en ninguna otra banda que haya estado en ese crucero haya esperado tocar heavy metal en un crucero por el Caribe cuando comenzaron, por lo que las sorpresas siguen llegando incluso tan lejos de todos nuestros locales de ensayo.

Como ves a The Black Dahlia Murder casi 20 años después?
Veo a la banda como una bola de nieve gigante rodando por una colina. No se puede detener. Continuaremos recorriendo las ciudades y demoliéndolas con nuestra fuerza en forma de música, y no hay nada que podamos hacer para detenerlo. Solo seguirá ganando impulso y tamaño. El calentamiento global permitido.

Como banda, cual es vuestra máxima aspiración? dónde os gustaría llegar?
Creo que todos queremos simplemente poder escribir y tocar la música que amamos para la gente que le gusta, y poder tocar con otras bandas que nos gustan, y pasar un buen rato haciéndolo, así como dejar un legado de nuestra música en el tiempo. La gente todavía lo apreciará en los próximos años. Entonces, mientras podamos seguir así, y seguir tocando shows cada vez más grandes,  crecer más como una banda y disfrutar haciendo esto, lo habremos logrado y continuaremos logrando ese objetivo. Si suficientes personas quieren vernos hacer una gira y asistir a esos conciertos, y quieren que sigamos haciendo música, ya hemos logrado lo que queremos de esto.

Como habéis estructurado los shows de esta gira? que vais a ofrecer?
Traeremos una embestida de música de una hora y 10 minutos, con esa mezcla característica de The Black Dahlia Murder, con canciones clásicas y  nuevas cosas, así como las estupidas bromas del escenario cuando tenemos que recuperar el aliento. Es mucho tocar en esa cantidad de tiempo, por lo que será mucho tocar y golpear, y no mucho más. Es posible que quieras empezar a estirar/calentar la cabeza y los músculos del cuello y/o trotar o caminar para que puedas mantener tu resistencia para estos conciertos.

Entrevista: J. A. Marroqui "Brujo"

I would like to thank you for having time for TNT Radio Rock. You were last year (March) with Cannibal Corpse for our country presenting your latest work "Nightbringers". How were your new songs received then? What feelings did those concerts leave you?
I think we had a very strong reception to the new material and to open up for cannibal corpse you need some good heavy material and we must have done something right cause people seemed to really love it. It definitely made us feel like our hard work on writing this new material paid off.

Now you arrive as headliners next April, in a tour throughout Europe. How do you see this tour for you? What expectations do you have?
We’re going to a lot of places that we don’t regularly go to like Scandinavia, Russia, Estonia, and Ireland and I think that its going to bring out a lot of fans who have been asking to see us for a while so it should be a pretty big exciting and energetic tour because of that. We also are playing a lot of big festivals with lots of other big bands so that will also help to bring a lot of our fans out as well.

Virvium will accompany you. Have you chosen them?, or is it something that you put it from the record label? What do you know about them?
We’ve played in Europe with them before and they are awesome dudes with awesome music so it’ll be great to have them opening up for us again.

"Nightbringers" has meant an important point in your career. How do you see it almost a year and a half after its released?
I think it’s been fun to play these songs a lot. Theres a lot of great feels to everything. Groove, speed, heaviness, catchiness. Its just a lot to grab on to and rock out with so I think like a fine wine its getting better with age and the more you abuse the amount you use of it the more fun you have.

A significant change in The Black Dahlia Murder was the addition of Brandon Ellis as guitar player. What contributed to "Nightbringers"?, and what does he contribute to the band?
he’s a huge force behind helping write the album. He brings a lot of old school influences to the songs and some really creative melodic ideas with the riffs and solos. He came in and took over Ryan Knight’s spot seamlessly. Their writing styles for solos and songs are very similar yet different from each other in terms of the use of vibrato with solos and very out of the box melodic progressions they write for both solos and riffs as well. He’s brought a lot of new ideas to for writing to the band as well as the energy of continuously coming up with ideas which is very essential for a band that has 8 albums out already.

In May you will do a mini tour with Meshuggah in the United States. The Swedish band is an institution within progressive metal. What does it mean for you to play together with bands as important as this or Cannibal Corpse last year?
Its an incredible honor to be opening for either of them but we are especially excited about meshuggah because we’ve only gotten to play with them at festivals where we’re probably on separate stages. To be featured on their shows is a huge compliment to us because they are such a tight, unique, heavy weight band that have tons of fans and play huge venues and if we can be chosen to open for them we must be doing something right with writing and performing. I think we all are excited to just be hanging out with our musical idols and get to be considered colleagues of theirs by getting to play shows together with them.

You have many months of tour and many shows. I do not know if this leaves you time and space to go make new music for a next album. Is the new album in your current or immediate plans?
Oh yes, most definitely! We’ve already written a majority of the new music but We will be continuing to write and finish the album writing over the next 2 months of touring and then when we get home in the middle to end of May we’ll be practicing the material to go into the studio in June to start the recording process so the next album is on the way!

Almost 20 years of career and 8 studio albums. For a death metal band, it's not bad. When you start with the first rehearsals, did you expect to be able to play all over the world, along with bands that have been influences for you?
As a non original member I cant answer this as Trevor or Brian could but im sure we all are constantly excited and amazed to get to play with all these bands that we’ve been listening to for years. We just did the 70,000 tons of metal cruise and it was an incredible experience. I don’t think anyone in our band or other bands that have been on that cruise ever expected to be playing heavy metal on a Caribbean cruise when they first started so the surprises just keep coming even being this far out of all of our garages.

How do you see The Black Dahlia Murder after almost 20 years?
I see the band as a giant snowball rolling down a hill. It cant be stopped. We’re gonna continue to roll through your towns and demolish them with our force of music and theres nothing anyone can do to stop it and its only going to keep gaining momentum and size. Global warming permitted.

As a band, what is your maximum goal? Where would you like to go?
I think we all just want to be able to write and play music we love for people who like it and to be able to play with other bands we love and have a good time doing it as well as leave a legacy of our music behind that people will still appreciate in years to come. So as long as we can keep that going and just keep playing bigger and bigger shows and do more as a band and enjoy doing it we will have achieved and continue to achieve that goal. if enough people want to see us do a tour and come to those tours and want us to keep making music, we’ve already been accomplishing what we want out of this.

How have you structured the shows of this tour? What are you going to offer?
We will be bringing an hour and 10 minute onslaught of music with that signature TBDM blend of the classic songs and new stuff as well as stupid stage banter when we have to catch our breaths. It’s a lot to play in that amount of time so its gonna be a lot of playing and thrashing and not much else. You may want to start your stretching your head banging neck muscles and or light jogging/power walking now so you can keep your endurance up for these shows.
