(English Below)

Interview  with Morten Veland

  1. First I wanted to thank you for your time and congratulate you on your 20th Anniversary and for this magnificient album. How are you living these days under the pandemic?

Thank you very much. It is an awful time that we live in. I am beyond fed up with the pandemic situation by now. It affects us all socially, mentally and financially. I spend most of my days at home, I try to work as much as possible in the studio, to make time pass by faster, and to at least make something positive out of the situation.

  1. The sound of Sirenia has evolved over the years. What bands influenced you in 2001 and which ones have influenced you when composing your new album?

I do not get that much inspired by other bands anymore. I tend to find inspiration elsewhere. Back in the early days I was listening a lot to Norwegian black metal and Gothic rock from the UK.

  1. Listening to “Riddles, Ruins & Revelations” as a whole, we can see that the songs have been enriched more than ever with new sounds: religious choirs, vocie-overs, announcers, etc Is this the album you have spent the most time on? How was the recording process?

I am not sure...that might be. Normally we spend something like 2 years on our albums. Some albums took a little bit longer, and some took us a little bit shorter. So far we have made 10 albums in 20 years. The recording process was a bit different this time, due to the pandemic that broke out exactly when we were about to start our recording sessions. We hardly travelled during these recordings. Me and Emmanuelle recorded all our parts in Norway, Nils did his parts in France, Michael recorded some parts in Finland. The album was mixed and mastered in Norway aswell. The covid 19 situation came with the travel restrictions, and it was really hard to plan anything this time, as we never really knew what the next week would bring. However we did the best out of the situation that we found ourselves in, and we were able to complete the album as we wanted. I am really happy with the way it turned out, it sounds fresh and modern to my ears, and our style is quite different to the other bands out there today.

  1. Moving on to the songs: Can you tell us what is the common thread of the songs? What themes appear in the lyrics of the songs?

I am still writing about the darker aspects of life and mankind. I try to find new ways and angles to write from. After writing so many songs over the years, it becomes harder and harder to find new subjects.

  1. Is the desire that first addiction you talk about? How many addictions appear on the album?

I believe that I refer to 4 different addictions, but it could be more even, depending on the mind that interpretates.

  1. In “Towards An Early Grave” appears the love until death. It is a theme that recalls the German romantic poetry of the "Sturm und drang". When writing the lyrics, where does the inspiration come from?

The song is not really about love, even though the theme of love is used as a metaphor. I do not know the German poetry that you refer to. I draw most of my inspiration from life itself, from everything that makes an impression on me. The Norwegian winter time has always been a great inspiration as well. I find myself very productive and creative at this time of year, always has.

  1. “Into Infinitity” or “Downwards Spiral” seem to me songs designed more to dance and not so much to raise only the fist. Was the intention of these songs to make dance?

I would say that 99% of everything on our albums are done intentionally. There are only a few incidents where a certain degree of experimenting has taken us into a direction that was not intended. But normally we have a vision that we work towards. Those two songs mentioned definitely brings something new to Sirenia's sound. It is very important for us to bring new things to the table with every album, as well as preserving our basic musical concept, we try to balance it out to the best of our abilities.

  1. “Passing Seasons” has some very operatic parts. Is Emmanuel still linked to the world of opera or does he only dedicate himself to Sirenia?

Yes, Emmanuelle is still working in the opera inbetween her work with Sirenia.

  1. Can “We come to ruins” or “Beneath The Midnight Sun” be the songs that most preserve the essence of Sirenia's first albums?

Yes, those two songs and probably also 'December Snow' and 'Passing Seasons' for example.

  1. There are moments in the lyrics that seem autobiographical like for example in “The Timeless Waning” when you say: Dusty dreams and bygone years all slipped through the hands of mine ... I passed by each moment of light guess I was too blind to see. Do these lyrics reflect your own thoughts? To what extent do you identify with them?

All my lyrics reflects my own thoughts. Some of them are more autobiographical than others though. I always write about subjects that I can relate to.

11.Since Emmanuel is the singer of Sirenia, you include in each album a song in French or parts of some songs. How did the idea come about?

I love the French lanuage, I find it very poetic and musical. And I am very interested in languages in general. So far we have made lyric parts in Norwegian, English, Latin, Spanish and French with Sirenia.

  1. And now you have covered a hit album from the 80s. “Voyage, Voyage” Who had the idea and why?

I have been a fan of the song since it was released back in 1986. I remember hearing it on the radio for the first time when I was 8 or 9 years old. I immidiately fell in love with it due to the melancholic feel there is to the song. I think this goes for a lot of the songs coming out of the eighties, a lot of minor based songs. The song stayed with me, and I actually have been playing it a lot on the tour bus in the last years. I suggested to the band that we should do a cover of it at some point. In March 2020 we were supposed to start recording the new album, but the recordings were postponed until August due to the covid 19 pandemic. I all of sudden had a lot of extra time on my hands, so I began working on the 'Voyage voyage' cover. In the end we were so pleased with the result that we decided to include it as a bonus track on the album.

  1. And finally, what plans do you have for this year 2021? Have you thought about presenting “... live? Will you pass through Spain?

It is very difficult to predict what will be possible this year. It seems that the pandemic will stay with us for many more months. Realistically I am hoping to be able to start touring again by the end of the year. When we are finally able to set up our next European tour, I believe that the chances are big that we come by Spain too. 🙂
