MAT SINNER (PRIMAL FEAR): "Somos muy felices de poder hacer la música que realmente amamos"
Con motivo de la salida a la venta del nuevo trabajo de PRIMAL FEAR, "Apocalypse", el próximo 10 de Agosto, estuvimos hablando con Mat Sinner sobre el disco y también sobre más cosas interesantes acerca de la banda.
Aquí están sus respuestas, muy interesantes para los fans de la banda.

TNT: Teneis nuevo disco: “Apocalypse” ¿Habéis hecho una obra conceptual?
Mat Sinner: No, no lo es, básicamente Ralf y yo hemos escrito las letras y éstas son muy diferentes. Un concepto no funcionaría y podría ser motivo de un álbum algo depresivo. Lo cual, en nuestro caso enciende todas las alarmas.
TNT: Explicadnos un poco de donde surge la idea de hacer un disco sobre el apocalipsis y como ha sido el proceso creativo del mismo.
Mat Sinner: El mundo se encuentra en un momento muy extraño, presidentes extraños con ideas terroríficas, políticos corruptos, todo se hace en un idioma grosero, terrorismo, crisis, ya no hay una sociedad seria. No es el entorno adecuado para escribir 11 canciones de amor.
TNT: El sonido es puro Primal Fear, muy reconocible. La verdad es que vuestro estilo está muy bien definido prácticamente desde el principio y deja poco margen a la innovación. ¿No os sentís un poco encasillados?
Mat Sinner: Nos enfocamos en nuestros fans y no en la gente que descarga el álbum gratis. Si nuestros fans son felices para nosotros ya es mucho, lo hemos hecho bien. En 2016 realizamos nuestro álbum más exitoso “Rulebreaker” – así que no necesitamos decepcionar a nuestros fans y forzarnos a tocar una clase diferente de Metal u otro estilo distinto. Somos muy felices de poder aun componer, producir y tocar la música que realmente amamos.
TNT: “The King of Madness” recrea una atmósfera un poco oscura, algo terrorífica en algunos pasajes. Explicadnos algo sobre esto.
Mat Sinner: El proceso de esta canción vino de forma muy natural. Primero, tuvimos la melodía, después el riff. Queríamos combinar una cierta atmósfera con unos versos difíciles y unos coros melódicos. Al final hemos quedado muy contentos con la canción, que será nuestro primer videoclip en imagen real. Estamos muy orgullosos de ella.
TNT: La parte central del disco con “Supernova” y “Hail to the Fear” es muy melódica y con preponderancia de los coros. ¿Creéis que se alcanza el clímax del disco con ellas?
Mat Sinner: Oh no, “Supernova” es una parte importante del álbum, pero no el clímax. Queríamos crear una balada sinfónica y dedicar mucho tiempo a esta canción para producirla poniendo especial cuidado en los sonidos orquestales y en las voces principales. Con “Hail to the Fear” queríamos crear un interesante medio tiempo agresivo con un montón de guitarras diferentes. Los tres guitarristas hicieron un grandísimo trabajo en esta canción. Un montón de guitarras armónicas y riffs destacables.
TNT: Acreditais a Magnus Karlsson en el disco. ¿Significa esto que se integra nuevamente en la banda y girará con vosotros?
Mat Sinner: No – Tenemos un trato con Magnus por el que seguirá estando en la banda, grabando y escribiendo con nosotros, uniéndose a Primal Fear en algunos festivales escogidos, pero no está en disposición de hacer giras con nosotros. Necesita estar con sus hijos y nosotros lo aceptamos. No hay razón para echarlo de la banda. Nuestro sistema es trabajar sutilmente y así continuaremos. Nuestros amigos y fans solo tienen que aceptar que Magnus no irá a las giras.
TNT: La canción “Eye of the storm” es la más larga y elaborada del disco. Habladnos un poco de esta canción por favor.
Mat Sinner: Necesitamos siempre un reto musical para crear una canción larga y épica en cada álbum. Esta vez “Eye of the Storm”. En cada álbum de Primal Fear puedes encontrar esta clase de canciones. Es muy grande sentarse en un estudio de grabación y conseguir unir este extenso puzzle y mantener el interés por una canción por encima de ocho minutos con muchas atmósferas, tempos y partes diferentes.
TNT: El disco tiene varios formatos distintos. Cd jewel box, CD+DVD, Box set con camiseta, Vinilo en tres opciones. ¿Por qué tanta variedad?
Mat Sinner: Nunca es la banda, es el sello discográfico. Es su trabajo salir con algo interesante para los fans y la banda aprecia en gran medida estas buenas ideas. No hay problema con la diversidad de formatos por nuestra parte.
TNT: Además en alguna de las ediciones icluís 3 bonus tracks: “Fight against evil”, “Into the fire”, “My war is over”. ¿Siguen estas canciones el concepto del álbum o no?
Mat Sinner: Hemos escrito cerca de 25 canciones y decidimos grabar once para el álbum y estar sobre los 50 minutos de duración. Para una posible edición limitada, hemos escogido tres canciones más que grabamos y mezclamos en la misma sesión. Son Bonus Tracks para los fans que siempre quieren más, además un DVD con video clips y un making off y entrevistas de alrededor de 30 minutos de duración.
TNT: ¿Qué canciones del álbum tocareis en directo en la próxima gira?
Mat Sinner: Ya estamos tocando “Hounds of Justice” en los shows de este verano y añadiremos cuatro canciones más para la próxima gira del 20 Aniversario. Pero lo vamos a decidir a mediados de Septiembre. Primero hay que hacer extensos ensayos.
TNT: ¿Qué proyectos de futuro inmediato tiene la banda?
Mat Sinner: Vamos a hacer alguna fiesta de lanzamiento el fin de semana del lanzamiento, tocaremos en algún festival más durante el verano y después tenemos un gran anuncio que aparecerá a mediados de Septiembre sobre el futuro de la banda y el arranque de la gira europea el 28 de Septiembre a lo largo de 5 semanas y 12 países, en Noviembre tocaremos algunos shows en Japón y Australia y en Diciembre haremos más conciertos en Alemania.

TNT: You have a new record coming: “Apocalypse”. Have you had a conceptual album?
Mat Sinner: No it’s not, basically Ralf and me are writing the lyrics and the lyrics are very different. A concept will not work and it would be overall a depressing album. So in our case it’s just a warning.
TNT: Explain us a few about the idea to do a record inspired in Apocalypse and how was the creative process of the album
Mat Sinner: The world is in a very strange progress, strange presidents with scary ideas, corrupt politicians, just all over a rude language, terrorism, crisis, no more serious partnerships. It was not the time to write 11 love songs.
TNT: It sound pure Primal Fear, we know it is a Primal Fear record everywhere we listen it. I know your stile is very definite since your first record and it leaves little room to innovation. Don’t you feel you are typecasted? Could you imagine another music style for Primal Fear?
Mat Sinner: We’re focusing on our fans and not people who are getting our album for free. If our fans are happy and there’s a lot, we have done it right. In 2016 we’ve released our most successful album so far “Rulebreaker” – so there’s no need in disappointing our fans and forcing us to play a different kind of style of metal. We are very happy that we can still compose, produce and play the music we’re really love.
TNT: “The King of Madness” have a dark atmosphere in certain moments is terrific too. Tell us something about this song please.
Mat Sinner: The process of this song came very naturally. First, we had the melody, then the riff. We wanted to combine a certain atmosphere with a tough verse and a melodic chorus. In the end we were so happy with the song, that it became our first real video clip, we’re really proud of.
TNT: The central part of the record with “Supernova” and “Hail to the Fear” is very melodic and it have very good choirs. This thrills me every time I listen it. Do you think this is the record’s climax, the top of the record?
Mat Sinner: Oh no, “Supernova” is an important part of the album, but not the climax. We wanted to come up with a symphonic ballad and put a lot time into this song to produce it regarding all the orchestrated sounds and the outstanding vocals. With “Hail To The Fear” we wanted to create an interesting groovy mid-tempo song with a lot of different guitars. All 3 guitarists are featured in a great way on this song. A lot of harmony guitars and mean riffs.
TNT: You credit Magnus Karlson in the record. It means he is coming back to the band and he’s gonna touring with Primal Fear?
Mat Sinner: No – we have a deal that Magnus will stay in the band, recording & writing with us, joining us on some chosen festivals, but is not in the position to tour with us. He needs to be with his kids and we have accepted it. No reason to throw him out of the band. Our system is working fine and we will continue. Our friends and fans just need to accept that Magnus can’t go on tour.
TNT: “Eye of the Storm” is the longest and elaborated song in the record. Can you tell something about this song?
Mat Sinner: We need always one musical challenge to create a longer epic song on an album. This time “Eye Of The Storm”. On every Primal Fear album you can find this kind of songs. It’s just great to sit in a recording studio and get this huge puzzle together and keep a song interesting over 8 minutes with all the different atmospheres, tempo and parts.
TNT: The album have some varied formats: Cd jewel boc, CD+DVD, Box set including t-shirt, vinyl in the options… Why did you edit this album so varied? Is it a marketing strategy?
Mat Sinner: It’s never the band, it’s the record company. It’s their job to come up with something interesting for the fans and the band really appreciates good ideas. No problem with different formats from our side.
TNT: Also in some of the editions you incorporate 3 bonus tracks: "Fight against evil”, “Into the fire”, “My war is over”. This songs follows the concept of the album too? Tell us something about the three.
Mat Sinner: We wrote about 25 songs and decided to record 11 songs for the album and over 50min. For a possible limited edition, we’ve chosen 3 more songs we’ve recorded and mixed in the same session. Bonus tracks for the fans who can’t get enough, plus a DVD with video clips and a making of and interviews with around 30min. playtime.
TNT: What songs of the album will you play live in the upcoming tour?
Mat Sinner: We already play “Hounds Of Justice” on the current summer shows and we will add 4 more songs for the coming 20 Years Anniversary tour. But we will decide in mid-September. First we have to do a longer rehearsal session.
TNT: What are the inmediate future of Primal Fear? What will you do next?
Mat Sinner: We will do some release parties on the weekend of the release, play some more open air festivals during the summer and then we have an exciting announcement coming up in Mid-September regarding the future of the band and kick off the European tour on Sept 28 for 5 weeks and 12 countries, in November we will play shows in Japan and Australia and in December we will play more shows in Germany.
