FRACTAL CYPHER - Entrevista con Simon Lavoie (Voz)
Llega el nuevo trabajo de la banda canadiense FRACTAL CYPHER, "Prelude To An Impending Outcome", un EP que precede a su álbum de 2016 "The Human Paradox". Con Simon Lavoie, vocalista de la banda de metal progresivo, habla nuestro compañero Brujo, para conocer su interesante trabajo.

Antes de empezar, agradeceros que saquéis un poco de tiempo para responder a nuestras preguntas. Vamos a hablar de vuestro nuevo disco y profundizar en él, me gustaría daros la enhorabuena. 4 canciones, 25 minutos… al final se hace corto. ¿No tenéis esa impresión?
¡Gracias por recibirnos! Comencemos diciendo que entre nuestro lanzamiento de 2016 "The Human Paradox" y nuestro nuevo EP "Prelude To An Impending Outcome", nos tomamos el tiempo para hacer las cosas bien. Sucedió muy rápido, sí, pero en cierto modo, también lentamente. No queríamos apresurar nada porque queríamos sacar algo de lo que estar orgullosos. Tenemos algunas grandes ideas para un próximo lanzamiento que habría retrasado demasiado las cosas. Queríamos traer algo en la mezcla, recompensar a las personas que siguen a la banda desde su debut y desafiarnos en nuevas áreas con esas 4 canciones.
"Prelude To An Impending Outcome" trae nuevos cambios con respecto a vuestro primer disco de 2016 ("The Human Paradox"). Por ejemplo, no hay voces agresivas, es un disco más limpio. Con una base marcada dentro del progresivo, mezclando metal y power, además de otros sonidos más duros. ¿Cuáles son las diferencias más marcadas con respecto a vuestro primer trabajo?
El cambio principal no es nuestro enfoque hacia la música, sino el proceso de composición en sí mismo. En el primer álbum, algunas de las canciones se escribieron hace mucho tiempo, antes de que la banda encontrara su sonido o dirección artística. Canciones que teníamos incluso antes de la creación de la banda. Así que puedes escuchar un poco de esto y aquello, una fusión de todas las influencias que nos gustaron desde tiempos inmemoriales. En este trabajo, la música aún es una mezcla de muchos géneros e influencias, pero las canciones no fueron escritas de antemano. Teníamos que empezar desde cero. Eso nos permitió crear la mezcla de géneros que tanto apreciamos, pero de una manera más coherente a nivel de composición.
¿Algún motivo especial por el que hayáis abandonado esas voces más duras?
No hay otra razón específica por la que nos guste hacer lo que mejor sirva a la canción. Sentimos que, en esas canciones en particular, las voces más chillonas no eran necesarias ni relevantes. No es algo que hayamos dejado de lado y no es imposible pensar que algunas voces con más gritos tendrán su hueco en el próximo lanzamiento de Fractal Cypher.
Es "Prelude To An Impending Outcome" un disco más abierto a otros sonidos e influencias. ¿Este es el sonido que buscabais?
Como un mini-álbum de cuatro canciones, quisimos mostrar una amplia gama de sonidos. Nos gusta decirnos que creamos canciones en primer lugar, sin la restricción o barrera de un género específico. Entonces, cuando creamos la canción "Red Lady", por ejemplo, sabíamos que impulsamos un poco más esa línea de pensamiento, agregando elementos de jazz y pop a una canción de metal. No es un sonido que estábamos buscando a propósito. Simplemente se sumó y terminó así y nos sentimos bien al respecto. Pensamos que mostrar un EP de 4 canciones con esa versatilidad y texturas dentro de la música fue divertido de escuchar varias veces antes de aburrirnos.
El disco tiene momentos muy brillantes, como el primer single “From The Above and To the Stars”, que es como un escaparate, un buen resumen o introducción al nuevo trabajo de Fractal Cypher. No sé si estáis de acuerdo…
Bueno, no podríamos estar más de acuerdo contigo. "From The Above and to the Stars" es una canción de Fractal Cypher de un libro de texto. Cuenta con todo lo que esta banda es. Esa es una canción que realmente nos gusta tocar también. Es un ajuste natural para las habilidades de todos dentro de la banda. Puedes esperar más de eso en el futuro.
La final “Red Lady” también me parece un gran tema, con más cambios de ritmo y sonidos… esa lucha entre teclados de la parte central me parece muy buena. Instrumentalmente, este disco también ha cambiado mucho respecto al anterior. ¿Como veis en líneas generales "Prelude To An Impending Outcome"?
Nos gusta creer que "Prelude" es más maduro que nuestro trabajo anterior. Es un estado de ánimo diferente en general. Hay menos secciones de show-off y solos, y todo funciona mejor. Una vez más, eso es para que el oyente decida. Es difícil comparar un álbum de 9 canciones con un EP de 4 canciones. El objetivo no es el mismo en absoluto. En ese EP, queríamos ser fieles a nosotros mismos, explorar nuevos terrenos y marcar el ritmo para el futuro.
Habéis contado con Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Agonist, Beyond Creation, Neuraxis) de nuevo para la producción. ¿Creéis que ha sabido captar vuestra idea y saca lo mejor que tenéis?
Chris es un productor increíble. Ha producido algunos de los mejores momentos de metal en Canadá y se ha convertido en un nombre de referencia en la industria. Él realmente sabe cómo hacer que una banda suene a metal y agresiva. Con nosotros, lo hizo, pero tuvo en cuenta el lado melódico de la banda y logró crear el equilibrio perfecto entre suavidad y el heavy, que es de lo que trata esa banda. También nos ayudó a producir los arreglos vocales para las canciones. El chico tiene inteligencia musical, es un músico y eso es definitivamente algo que quieres en tu rincón cuando estás en el estudio.
Viendo el título del Ep, "Prelude To An Impending Outcome", ¿podemos tomar su significado como una especie de amenaza de lo que está por llegar de parte de Fractal Cypher?
De hecho, esa es una manera de verlo. Un poco de todo lo que hace de Fractal Cypher lo que es. La próxima versión no será una continuidad de "Prelude To An Impending Outcome". Pero puedes decir que es una buena muestra de lo que viene después. Una vez más, esta banda está llena de sorpresa, ¿cuál es el resultado? Mantengamos el misterio completo.
La portada, con un astronauta suspendido en la inmensidad del espacio… ¿que intentáis reflejar con ello?
El concepto detrás de la portada proviene de la mentalidad de la banda en sí. Musicalmente, disfrutamos conectando cosas en conjunto que no pensarías en primer lugar. Exploramos una mezcla de diferentes géneros, ambientes y ambientes, a menudo dentro de la misma canción. Entonces, cuando la idea de un astronauta flotando en aguas profundas, rodeada de burbujas de aire y apuntando a una esfera brillante no identificada, tal vez una estrella, supimos que habíamos encontrado nuestra paradoja una vez más. La expresión de dos ideas que son a priori, difíciles de encajar.
Con el disco recién salido a la calle, que planes de futuro tiene la banda?
No tenemos la intención de permanecer inactivos por mucho tiempo. Saldremos y tocaremos las nuevas canciones en todo Canadá y comenzaremos el proceso de composición para nuestro segundo álbum de larga duración. Tenemos algunas cosas que quedan por confirmar también.
Con qué banda o bandas os gustaría compartir una extensa gira?
Hay una banda de Túnez llamada Myrath que realmente nos encanta. Creemos que sería un gran ajuste entre las dos bandas compartir una gira y estaríamos más que honrados de compartir el escenario con ellos. Tampoco diríamos no a una gira con la banda Kamelot, jejeje.
En general, como veis la escena actual del metal progresivo? Que bandas nuevas os han sorprendido más?
Creemos que la escena se está renovando lentamente después de algunos años en modo de suspensión. No es que haya menos bandas de calidad, eso sería una mentira. Simplemente sentimos que hay un gran interés por la escena del metal progresivo últimamente que no se ha visto en mucho tiempo. Artistas como Haken, Seventh Wonder y TesseracT sacaron álbumes con gran calidad este año. Así decimos que la escena está bien y viva.

First of all, thank you very much for having time to answer the questions and I would like to start talking about your new album and getting into it, I'd like to congratulate you. 4 Songs, 25 minutes ... at the end it becomes short. It seems that everything has happened very fast. Do not you have that impression?
Thanks for having us! Let's start by saying that between our 2016 release "The Human Paradox" and our new EP "Prelude to an Impending Outcome", we took time to do things right. It happened very fast yes, but in a way, slowly as well. We didn't want to rush anything because we wanted to release something to be proud of. We have some big ideas for a next release that would have delayed things too much. We wanted to bring something in the mix, reward people who follow the band since its debut and challenge ourselves in new areas with those 4 songs.
"Prelude To An Impending Outcome" brings new changes regarding your first album, "The Human Paradox". For example, there are no aggressive voices, it's a cleaner album. With a base marked within the progressive, mixing metal and power, in addition to other harder sounds. What are the most important differences regarding your first work?
The main change is not our approach towards the music but the writing process in itself. On the first album, some of the songs were written a long time ago, before the band had found its sound or artistic direction if you want. Songs that we had even before the creation of the band. So you can hear a little bit of this and that, a melting pot of all the influences that we liked from time immemorial. On this release, the music is still a blend of a lot of genres and influences, but the songs we’re not written in advance. We had to start from scratch. That allowed us to create the mix of genres that's so dear to us, but in a more coherent way on a composition level.
Any special reason why you left those harder voices?
There's no specific reason other that we like to do what serves the song best. We felt that on those particular songs, the scream vocals were neither required nor relevant. It is not something that we left out for good and it's not impossible to think that some scream vocals will have its place on the next Fractal Cypher release.
It is "Prelude To An Impending Outcome" an album more open to other sounds and influences. Is this the sound you were looking for?
As a four songs mini-album, we wanted to showcase a wide range of sounds. We like to tell each other that we create songs first and foremost, without the restriction or barrier of a specific genre. So, when we came up with the song "Red lady" for instance, we knew that we pushed a bit further that line of thought, adding jazz and pop elements to a metal song. It is not a sound that we were looking for on purpose. It just added up and ended up like that and we felt good about it. We thought showing a 4 songs EP with that versatility and textures within the music was fun to listen to quite a few times before getting bored.
The album has very bright moments, as the first single "From The Above and To the Stars" is like a good showcase, a good summary or introduction to the new work of Fractal Cypher. I do not know if you agree.
Well, we couldn't agree more with you. "From The Above and to the Stars" is a textbook Fractal Cypher song. It features everything that this band is. That's a song that we really enjoy performing as well. It's a natural fit to everyone's abilities within the band. You can expect more of that in the future.
The final song "Red Lady" also seems to me a great cut, with more changes of rhythm and sounds ... that fight between keyboards in the central part seems to me very good. Instrumentally, this album has also changed a lot from the previous one. How do you see in general "Prelude to an Impending Outcome"?
We like to believe that "Prelude" is more mature than our previous release. It's a different mood overall. There is less "show-off" sections and solos and everything runs more smoothly. Again, that's for the listener to decide. It's hard to compare a 9 tracks album with a 4 songs EP. The objective is not the same at all. On that EP, we wanted to be true to ourselves, explore new grounds and set the pace for the future.
You have had Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Agonist, Beyond Creation, Neuraxis) again for the production. Do you think he has learned to capture your idea and brings out the best in you?
Chris is just an amazing producer. He's produced some of the finest metal act in Canada and has become a reference name in the industry. He really knows how to make a band sound metal and aggressive. With us, he did that but he kept in mind the melodic side of the band and successfully crafted the perfect balance between softness and heaviness, which is what that band is all about. He also helped us produce the vocal arrangements for the songs. The guy has a musical intelligence, being a musician himself and that's definitely something you want in your corner when in the studio.
Looking at the title of the Ep, "Prelude To An Impending Outcome", can we take its meaning as a kind of warning of what is to come from Fractal Cypher?
That's indeed a way to see it. A little bit of everything that makes Fractal Cypher what it is. The next release will not be a continuity of "Prelude to an Impending Outcome". But you can say that it's a good taste of what's coming next. Again, this band's full of surprise so what's the outcome? Let's keep the mystery whole.
The cover, with an astronaut suspended in the immensity of space ... what do you try to reflect with it?
The concept behind the artwork for "Prelude to an Impending Outcome" comes from the mindset of the band itself. Musically, we enjoy connecting things together that you wouldn't think of in the first place. We explore a blend of different genres, mood and atmospheres, often within the same song. So, when the idea of an astronaut floating in deep-water, surrounded by air bubbles and pointing a glowing unidentified sphere, perhaps a star, we knew we had found our paradox once again. The expression of two ideas that are priori doesn't seem to fit together.
With the album just out, what future plans does the band have?
We don't intend to stay idle for long. We will go out and play the new songs across Canada and start the writing process for our 2nd full length album. We have a few opportunities that remain to be confirmed as well.
With what band or bands would you like to share an extensive tour?
There's a band from Tunisia called "Myrath" that we really love. We think it would be a great fit between the two bands to share a tour and we would be more than honoured to share the stage with them. We wouldn't say no to a tour with the American band "Kamelot" either 😉
In general, how do you see the current progressive metal scene? What new bands have surprised you?
We believe that the scene is slowly renewing itself after a few years on sleep mode. Not that there were less quality bands, that would be a lie. We just feel that there's a keen interest for the progressive metal scene lately that hasn't been seen in a while. Artists like Haken, Seventh Wonder and TesseracT all released quality albums this year. So we say the scene is well and alive.
