Entrevista; UNLEASHED (Johnny Hedlund)... "Creo que estamos donde estamos por una razón. Ha sido un viaje increíble y hemos tenido una buena cantidad de altibajos, pero así es la vida"

Desde 1989 UNLEASHED llevan agarrados a la bandera Viking Death Metal, siendo uno de los importantes baluartes del estilo, firmes y fieles a una ideología. Tres años despues de su anterior "The Hunt For The White Christ", llegan con "No Sign Of Life". Un excelente álbum que continua la propia historia creada por Johnny Hedlund, fundador de la banda, y un amigo... Y sobre todo ello hablamos con el propio Johnny.

Antes de nada, agradecer tu tiempo y  este excelente nuevo trabajo !!

Vuelves 3 años después de tu anterior “The Hunt for White Christ”, con un disco duro, potente y muy contundente… “No Sign of Life”. Desafortunadamente, la pandemia detuvo las giras y muchos otros planes programados para los últimos dos años. ¿En qué medida afectó a Unleashed?
Bueno, como dices, por supuesto, ha sido muy triste vernos obligados a posponer todos nuestros festivales y conciertos. Pero no hay mucho que nosotros u otras bandas podamos hacer al respecto. En cuanto a la grabación y el proceso creativo del nuevo álbum, no nos afectó en absoluto. Trabajamos exactamente de la misma manera esta vez. Enviamos archivos de música y letras entre nosotros para acordar qué es lo suficientemente bueno para el álbum. La pre-producción tampoco se vio afectada en absoluto. Y la grabación real no fue un problema, ya que todos estábamos sanos y no nos vimos afectados por ningún virus o similar. Todo bien aquí.

En una primera escucha, "No Sign of Life" es mucho más directo que su predecesor. No hay partes acústicas, tus influencias de thrash son mucho más notorias, sin abandonar el sonido que caracteriza a Unleashed. No sé si estás de acuerdo. ¿Qué tiene este álbum que no tenga “The Hunt for White Christ”?
Oh, realmente no lo sé. Y quizás no pienso mucho en ese tipo de comparación para ser honesto. Pero como dijiste, siempre apuntamos a mantener nuestras raíces y, sin embargo, probar algunas cosas nuevas para seguir desarrollando el estilo Viking Death Metal, y también para ser un poco refrescantes en un nuevo álbum. Eso todavía significa que valoramos mucho mantener el ADN de la banda, por así decirlo.

Hablemos un poco de algunas canciones de “No Sign of Life”, te cuento algunas que me han llamado la atención y tú me comentas, te parece?
¡Absolutamente! ¡Dispara!

El álbum se abre con "The King Lost His Crown" y "The Shepherd Has Left the Flock", dos de las canciones más rápidas y contundentes del álbum. El segundo con unas guitarras muy endiabladas y un ritmo muy frenético. Es como si te hubieras liberado de mucha ira. ¿No?
Yo diría que ese es siempre el caso en la música Death Metal. O al menos muy a menudo. Tiene que haber ira por dentro o no hay mucho que desatar.

"Where Can You Flee?" y “You Are the Warrior!”, manteniendo distintos matices entre ellos, son más devastadores, sin tener esa velocidad de los dos primeros. Con una base rítmica contundente, una batería arrolladora ... suenan demoledores....
¡Gracias! Sí, existe esta fórmula que siempre usamos en nuestros álbumes y también en nuestra lista de canciones, y es que siempre tratamos de tener una sensación tan dinámica como sea posible. Lo que significa que no queremos crear una lista de canciones o un álbum con 7 canciones realmente rápidas seguidas, sino mezclar canciones rápidas, de ritmo medio y lentas. Independientemente del estilo musical en realidad.

"Midgard Warriors for Life" es como una marcha rápida, con cierto toque oscuro ... Junto al inicial "The King Lost His Crown" han sido tus primeros singles. Dos canciones con registros diferentes. ¿Cómo han funcionado? ¿Qué sensaciones te han dejado?
Bueno, "Midgard Warriors for life" no fue un single. Pero como se indicó anteriormente, son bastante diferentes entre sí, pero hacen una combinación perfecta si miras la dinámica en el disco en su totalidad.

Dos canciones que me gustaron mucho ... "Tyr Wields the Sword", con ese toque osuro, y "It Is Finished" (es una de mis favoritas), con ese ritmo y esas guitarras ... El trabajo general de guitarra en el disco es brutal ...
Ok, es bueno escuchar eso. Bueno, creo que ahora tenemos casi todas las combinaciones posibles, ya que escuchamos lo que la gente tiene como favoritos en este álbum. Es muy diverso y es muy bueno escuchar eso.

En los dos primeros sencillos, vemos que líricamente, las letras del disco siguen vuestra línea sobre la mitología vikinga, con esa carga anticristiana y antirreligiosa. ¿Podrías profundizar un poco más en las letras de “No Sign of Life”?
Este álbum es el quinto álbum consecutivo con la misma historia, (El mundo de Odalheim). Un libro que un amigo mío y yo comenzamos a escribir hace muchos años. No tuvimos tiempo de terminar el libro, así que decidimos convertir los capítulos en canciones, por así decirlo. La trama general de "El mundo de Odalheim" es la lucha de los Midgard Warriors por su estilo de vida contra el principal enemigo, el Cristo Blanco. Cuando llegamos a la canción principal, los Midgard Warriors están persiguiendo a los ejércitos del Cristo Blanco hacia la gran península del Sinaí, y luego hacia el gran desierto caluroso y vacío. De ahí el título “No hay señales de vida”. Porque en ese momento de la historia, no encuentran rastro de los ejércitos del Cristo Blanco, solo muerte y desierto.

Una vez más, Fredrik se ha encargado de la producción de “No Sign of Life”, además, habéis estado todos juntos casi desde el inicio de la banda, lo que da un empaque y una comprensión de lo que se quiere en cada momento. Supongo que esa es una de las claves por las que pasa la historia de Unleashed. Fieles a su estilo inicial, y una carrera firme de 32 años y 14 álbumes, más demos, splits, Ep's… ¿Cuál es el truco para poder permanecer juntos tanto tiempo? (cuando vemos muchas bandas con constantes cambios de alineación, paradas, reapariciones ...)
Exactamente. Nos da el beneficio de saber exactamente lo que los otros miembros de la banda realmente quieren y les gusta en el proceso creativo de un nuevo álbum.
Diría que, ante todo, deben ser muy buenos amigos. Luego, debes acordar de qué se trata la banda y qué hacer con ella. Y qué NO hacer con la banda. Debes asegurarte de que todos los miembros estén de acuerdo en que no es un espectáculo de un solo hombre, pero todos los miembros tienen que ayudar en la banda con todos los asuntos relacionados con ella. Acordamos estas cosas desde el principio y eso facilitó las cosas de lo que hubiera sido de otra manera.

Si miras hacia atrás, ves cómo empezó la banda en el '89, cómo se llegó a ese primer álbum en el '91 ("Where No Life Dwells"). ¿Cómo ves el paso de UNLEASHED por la escena extrema a lo largo de estos años?
Siento que hemos hecho lo que dijimos que haríamos. Y creo que estamos donde estamos por una razón. Ha sido un viaje increíble y hemos tenido una buena cantidad de altibajos, pero así es la vida. No puedes tener solo cosas buenas en tu camino todo el tiempo. Eso no es realista. Creo que nuestra música y letras han desarrollado el estilo Viking Death Metal en un buen lugar y también en un nivel profesional, pero manteniendo las raíces y el ADN de la banda, por así decirlo.

Habéis empezado a anunciar fechas para el 2022. ¿Es optimista sobre el covid, y que en unos meses volverá la "normalidad"?
No soy tan optimista. Solo porque puede haber fuerzas que se beneficien demasiado de esta mierda de encierro. Realmente ya no sé qué esperar. Pero tenemos que planificar el futuro, no hay otra opción. Todos nos enfermaremos o cogeremos un resfriado terrible, etc. eventualmente. Ya no podemos detener la vida, tenemos que seguir adelante independientemente, esa es mi opinión sobre las cosas tal como están ahora.

Y con el álbum en la calle, recién lanzado, ¿cuáles son los planes inmediatos de UNLEASHED?
Solo intentamos reservar todo lo que podamos para 2022 y, con suerte, entonces podremos tocar en festivales y espectáculos nuevamente, y conocer a todos nuestros amigos de todo el mundo y juntarnos.

Para cerrar la entrevista, y a modo de resumen, ¿cómo definirías tu nuevo disco "No Sign of Life"?
Es el siguiente paso en Viking Death Metal.

You return 3 years after your previous “The Hunt for White Christ”, with a hard, powerful, and very forceful album… “No Sign of Life”. Unfortunately, the pandemic stopped tours and many other plans scheduled for the last two years. To what extent did it affect Unleashed?
Well like you say here it has off course been very sad to be forced to postpone all our festivals and shows. But there isn’t much we or other bands could do about that. As for the recording and creative process of the new album it didn’t affect us at all. We worked the exact same way this time again. Sending music and lyric files back and forth to each other in order to agree on what is good anough for the album. The pre-production was also not affected at all. And the actual recording was no problem since we were all healthy and not affected by any virus or the like. So all good here.

In a first listen, "No Sign of Life" is much more direct than its predecessor. There are no acoustic parts, your thrash influences are much more noticeable, without abandoning the sound that characterizes Unleashed. I don't know if you agree. What does this album have that “The Hunt for White Christ” doesn't have?
Oh I don’t really know. And perhaps I don’t think about that kind of comparison that much to be honest. But like you said, we always aim to keep to our roots and yet try some new things so that we keep developing the Viking Death Metal style and also to be slightly refreshing on a new album. That still means we put great worth into keeping the bands DNA so to speak.

Let's talk a little about some songs from “No Sign of Life”, I'll tell you about some that have caught my attention, and you tell me about them, okay?
Absolutely! Fire off!

The album opens with "The King Lost His Crown" and "The Shepherd Has Left the Flock", two of the fastest and most forceful songs on the album. The second with some very devilish guitars and a very frenetic rhythm. It is as if you have released a lot of anger from yourself. No?
I’d say that is always the case in Death Metal music. Or at least very often. There has to be anger inside or there isn’t much to Unleash.

"Where Can You Flee?" and “You Are the Warrior!”, maintaining different nuances between them, are more devastating, without having that speed of the first two. With a forceful rhythmic base, an overwhelming drums ... they sound devastating. Tell us about them.
Thank you! Yes there is this formula we always use on our albums and also on our setlist and that is that we always try to have as mych dynamic feeling to them as we possibly can. Meaning that we don’t want to create a setlist or an album with 7 really fast songs in a row, but to mix between fast, mid-paced and slow songs. This is also how I like a record to be if I go out and by one myself. Regardless of musical style really.

"Midgard Warriors for Life" is like a fast march, with a certain dark touch ... Along with the initial "The King Lost His Crown" have been your first singles. Two songs with different registers. How they have worked? What sensations have they left you?
Well “Midgard Warriors for life” wasn’t a single though. But like stated above, they are pretty different to each other, yet they make a perfect blend if you look at the dynamics on the record in full.

Two songs that I really liked ... "Tyr Wields the Sword", with that black touch, and "It Is Finished" (it's one of my favorites), with that rhythm and those guitars ... The general guitar work in the disco is brutal ...
Ok good to hear. Well I think We have just about all combinations possible now as we hear what people have as favourites on this album. It is very diverse and that’s real good to hear.

In the first two singles, we see that lyrically, the lyrics of the album follow your line on Viking mythology, with that anti-Christian and anti-religion load. Could you go a little deeper into the lyrics of “No Sign of Life”?
This album is the 5th consecutive album whith the same storyline. (The World of Odalheim). A book me and afriend of mine started writing many years ago. We never got the time to finish the book so we decided to make the chapters into songs so to speak. The General plot of “The World of Odalheim” is the Midgard Warriors fight for their way of life against the main enemy White Christ. As we reach the title track, the Midgard Warriors are persecuting the armies of White Christ into the great Sinai Peninsula, and then onward into the great hot and empty desert. Hence the title “No sign of life”. Because at that time in the storyline, they find no sign of the armies of White Christ, only death and desert.

Once again, Fredrik has been in charge of the production of “No Sign of Life”, in addition, you have all been together almost since the beginning of the band, which gives a packaging and an understanding of what is wanted at all times. I guess that's one of the keys that the Unleashed story goes through. True to their initial style, and a firm career of 32 years and 14 albums, more demos, splits, Ep’s… What is the trick to being able to stay together for so long? (when we see many bands with constant line-up changes, stops, comebacks ...)
Exactly. It does give us the benefit of knowing exactly what the other band members really want and like in the creative process of a new album.
I’d say you have to be very good friends first and foremost. Then, you need to agree on what the band should be all about, and what to do with the band. And, what NOT to do with the band. You need to make sure all members agree it is not a one man show but all members have to help out in the band with all matters concerning the band. We agreed on theese things very early on and that made things easier that what otherwise would have been the case.

If you look back, you see how the band started in '89, how that first album was reached in '91 ("Where No Life Dwells"). How do you see the passage of UNLEASHED through the extreme scene throughout these years?
I feel we have done what we said we would. And I think we are where we are for a reason. It’s been a hell of a ride and we’ve had our fair share of ups and downs but that’s life. You can’t have just good things coming your way all the time. That isn’t realistic. I think our music and lyrics have developed the Viking Death Metal style into a good place and also a preffessional level, yet keeping the roots and the bands DNA so to speak.

You have started to announce dates for 2022. Are you optimistic about the covid, and that in a few months "normality" will return?
I am not so optimistic. Only because there might be forces that benefit too much on this lock down bullshit. I really don’t know what to hope for anymore. But we have to plan for a future, there is no other option. We will all get ill or catch a terrible cold etc eventually. We can’t stop life anymore we have to move on regardless, that’s my take on things as they stand now.

And with the album out on the street, just released, what are UNLEASHED's immediate plans?
We just try to book as much as we can for 2022 and hopefully then we get to play festivals and shows again and meet all our friends all around the world and bang heads togeather.

To close the interview, and as a summary, how would you define your new album "No Sign of Life"?
It is the next step in Viking Death Metal.
