ENTREVISTA a TRAGEDY (con Mo’Royce Peterson) -english below-

Hace unos días tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con Mo’Royce Peterson, cantante y guitarrista de la banda neoyorquina TRAGEDY. Este grupo de versiones irreverentes de música disco de los 70 y 80 lanzan hoy 30 de julio su disco recopilatorio "Disco Balls to the Wall".

TNT: En primer lugar, gracias por atender a TNT Radio Rock y felicitaros por vuestra propuesta.

Mo’Royce:¡Gracias! Es un placer estar contigo. ¡Bienvenido a la entrevista que cambiará el mundo para siempre!

TNT: Lleváis más de trece años con Tragedy, ¿cómo surgió la idea de montar esta banda?

Mo’Royce: Un promotor de Nueva York nos pidió que tuviéramos una idea divertida para una banda de apoyo para un par de shows importantes que tenía que venir. Estábamos pensando en hacerle un tributo a un artista que decididamente NO era metal, y finalmente aterrizamos en los Bee Gees. Al principio pensamos que sería solo una especie de broma, pero luego comenzamos a trabajar en la música y a tocar frente al público y nos dimos cuenta de que estábamos en algo especial, y en una experiencia musical y de conciertos realmente divertida que hacía feliz a mucha gente. Finalmente, comenzamos a hacer canciones que no eran de Bee Gees, ¡ahora nadie está a salvo de Tragedy!

TNT: Además de Tragedy, ¿tienes otros proyectos musicales?

Mo’Royce: Para mí, personalmente, Tragedy se ha apoderado de mi vida como intérprete. Pero sigo trabajando con otros artistas como productor, ingeniero y músico invitado. Disco Mountain Man (voz y teclados) todavía tiene una próspera vida musical original con sus grupos, Corn Mo y 357 Lover. Y Garry Bibb (guitarra y voz) tiene un nuevo proyecto llamado Trip Villain.

TNT:¿Cuál es la respuesta de la gente al escuchar esos clásicos de la música disco, con un sonido más duro?

Mo’Royce: Es un poco divertido ver a la gente experimentar la banda por primera vez. Algunos lo entienden de inmediato, otros se confunden o incluso se enojan al principio. Pero hemos visto esto en los festivales de metal: la mitad de la audiencia puede estar tratando de verse serias y sombrías al comienzo del espectáculo, pero al final, incluso los más duros acaban bailando YMCA. No tenemos inhibiciones y la audiencia sigue nuestro ejemplo.

TNT: Siendo una banda de Nueva York habéis fichado por Napalm Records, ¿qué buscáis con ello?

TNT: ¿Por qué una recopilación si hace un año publicaste un show en vivo?

Mo’Royce: Lanzamos un vídeo completo del concierto durante la pandemia y un álbum que lo acompaña. Pero nuestras grabaciones de estudio son una experiencia auditiva mucho más profunda y matizada. "Disco Balls to the Wall" es el primer álbum que hemos hecho con un lanzamiento mundial adecuado, por lo que pensamos que una compilación de estudio sería mejor como una introducción a lo que hace Tragedy.

TNT: ¿Fue difícil elegir las canciones para esta recopilación de “Disco Balls to the Wall”?

TNT: ¿Tenéis material nuevo? ¿Haréis otro álbum conceptual como “The Joy of Sex” o “Goes to the Movies?

TNT: Personalmente, me gustan las canciones que están lejos del original como "“You‘ re are all that i want ”) ¿Cómo decidís qué canciones versionaréis y cómo las haréis, más fieles o menos al original?

Mo’Royce: Sí, es divertido cuando tenemos una canción como esa, que es tan optimista en todo momento, pero la convertimos en algo oscuro y de mal humor, al menos en una parte de la canción. Siempre mantenemos la melodía, la letra y el género intactos del original, por lo que toda nuestra creatividad tiene que venir en forma de arreglos musicales y estilo. El proceso de selección y creación de canciones es muy similar a producir canciones originales. Seguimos nuestros instintos creativos, nos volvemos locos con eso y luego editamos en el camino. Cualquier canción que hagamos debe ser decididamente anti-metal para empezar. Excepto cuando hicimos lo contrario ... convertimos "Crazy Train" en una sombría grabación de soft-rock.

TNT: También quería decirte que me he echado de menos el tema "Last Christmas" de vuestro álbum de canciones navideñas en este “Disco Balls to the Wall”. ¿Planeáis hacer una segunda parte de ese álbum?

Mo’Royce: ¡Ah! Las canciones y álbumes navideños son difíciles porque la gente solo escucha esas cosas durante unas pocas semanas al año. De hecho, hay algunas grabaciones geniales en nuestro álbum, # 1 Christmas Holiday Party Mix. ¡Deberíamos hacer la mezcla n. ° 2 para fiestas navideñas!

TNT: ¿Habéis pensado en hacer versiones de canciones más actuales (del siglo XXI, por ejemplo?)?

Por supuesto, Tragedy se asocia con bandas que están en el lado de la comedia del tipo: Steel Panther, Nanowar of Steel. Y es genial que esté sucediendo ese tipo de escena. Por supuesto, todavía hay algunas personas rígidas y de mente cerrada, lo que realmente no entiendo. ¿Esta gente se metió en el metal para poder convertirse en los fundamentalistas críticos contra los que se formó la cultura del metal para rebelarse?  TNT: ¿Qué opinas de las bandas tributo a un solo grupo?

Mo’Royce: Una banda tributo tiene más oportunidades de profundizar artísticamente que una banda de covers en general. Si una banda de tributo profundiza mucho en los personajes que encarna, puede convertirse en una gran experiencia teatral. Si no profundizan tanto, pueden sentirse muy huecos y aburridos.

TNT: Ahora con Napalm Records, ¿podremos veros en Europa o España?

Mo’Royce: Si Dark Lord lo permite, ¡sí! Hemos estado de gira por el Reino Unido durante más de 10 años. Hemos tocado en el Summer Breeze muchas veces, en el Motocultor Festival, y realizamos una pequeña gira en Francia, Alemania, Holanda, Bélgica. Pero realmente nos gustaría hacer más giras por Europa, especialmente en España. He estado en España después de la gira muchas veces y es mi lugar favorito en la tierra.

TRAGEDY INTERVIEW (with Mo’Royce Peterson)

TNT: First of all, thank you for attending TNT Radio Rock and congratulate you on your proposal.

Mo’Royce:  Cheerz!  It’s a pleasure being with you. Welcome to the interview that will forever change the world!

TNT: You have been with Tragedy for more than thirteen years, how did the idea of ​​setting up this band come about?

Mo’Royce:  We were asked by a New York promoter to come up with a fun idea for a support band for a couple big shows he had coming up. We were thinking of doing tribute to an artist who was decidedly NOT metal, and eventually landed on the Bee Gees. We thought it would be just kind of a joke initially, but then we started working on the music and playing in front of audiences we realized that we were onto something special, and a really fun musical and concert experience that would make a lot of people very happy. Eventually, we started doing non-Bee Gees songs - now no one is safe from Tragedy!

TNT: Besides Tragedy, do you have other musical projects?

Mo’Royce:  For me personally, Tragedy has taken over my life as a performer.  But I continue to work with other artists as a producer, engineer and guest musician.  Disco Mountain Man still has a thriving original music life with his acts, Corn Mo and .357 Lover.  And Garry Bibb has a new project called Trip Villain.

TNT: What is the response of people when listening to those disco classics, with a harder sound?

Mo’Royce:  It’s kind of funny to see people first experience the band.  Some understand it immediately, others are confused, or even angered by it at first.  But we have seen this as at metal festivals - half of the audience may be trying to look cool and grim at the start of the show, but by the end, even the hardest looking people are doing the YMCA dance.  We have no inhibitions, and the audience follows our lead.

TNT: Being a band from New York you have signed for Napalm Records, what are you looking for with it?

Mo’Royce:  Total world domination.  But don’t worry, we’ll be benevolent leaders.  Under Tragedy’s power, you will be well-fed, healthy and sexually gratified.

TNT: Why a compilation if a year ago you published a live show?

Mo’Royce: We released a full concert video during the pandemic and an album that goes with it.  But our studio recordings are a much deeper, more nuanced listening experience.  Disco Balls to the Wall is the first album we have done with a proper worldwide release, so we thought a studio compilation would be best as an introduction to what Tragedy does.

TNT: Was it difficult to choose the songs for this “Disco Balls to the Wall” compilation?

Mo’Royce:  Yes! It’s like trying to pick your favorite children...if you have 84 children and must decide on only 14 of them that you won’t abandon. For this album, we consulted Odin and his son Thor, and let them make the decisions. It’s good to have those guys on the team!

TNT: Do you have new material? Will you make another concept album like “The Joy of Sex” or “Goes to the Movies?

Mo’Royce:  Yes, we are working on a new concept and songs for the next album.  And we should really do a Spanish-language song, if not a whole album, right? Livin’ La Vida Tragedy?

TNT: Personally, I like songs that are far from the original like “You‘ re are all that i want ”) How do you decide which songs you will cover and how will you make them - more faithful or less to the original?

Mo’Royce:  Yeah, it’s fun when we have a song like that, which is so upbeat throughout, but we turn it into something dark and moody, at least for part of the song.  We always keep the melody, lyrics and gender intact from the original - so all our creativity has to come in the form of musical arrangement and style.  The song selection and creation process is very similar to producing original songs.  We follow our creative instincts, go crazy with it, then edit along the way.  Any song we do must be decidedly un-metal to begin with.  Except for when we did the opposite...we turned Crazy Train into a somber soft-rock recording.

TNT: I also wanted to tell you that I have missed Last Christmas from your album of Christmas songs in this “Disco Balls to the Wall”. Are you planning to make a second part of that album?

Mo’Royce: Ha! Christmas songs and albums are tough because people only listen to that stuff for a few weeks per year.  There are indeed some great recordings on our album, #1 Christmas Holiday Party Mix.  We should totally make #2 Christmas Holiday Party Mix!

TNT: Have you thought about covering more current songs (from the 21st century, for example?)?

Mo’Royce:  The new album includes our only song from this century - Skyfall, the James Bond theme originally done by Adele.  Part of the magic of what we do is taking songs that have really embedded themselves in the cultural DNA - then we go in and rearrange the DNA, blow your mind and make you fall in love with us.  That said, I would like to do the entire soundtrack to Frozen.

TNT: Apart from disco music, what are your other influences?

Mo’Royce:  Tragedy is influenced by all the stuff we grew up hearing - lots of 70’s soft and hard rock, hardcore and hair metal from the 80’s.  And of course, we learned the pitfalls of being too earnest from the 90’s.  We take in influences from all over the spectrum - Frank Sinatra, King Crimson, Judas Priest, Manowar, Cher, Prince.

TNT: How do you see the current metal scene? Do you follow any band or style?

Mo’Royce:  I love how wide open the metal scene has become - so many sub-genres thriving.  Of course, Tragedy gets associated with acts on the comedy side of the spectrum - Steel Panther, Nanowar of Steel.  And it’s great that kind of scene is happening.  Of course there are still some rigid, close-minded people out there, which I really don't get. Did these people get into metal so they could become the judgemental, fundamentalists that metal culture was formed to rebel against? But most folks in metal have open hearts and minds.  It is the world’s most thriving music scene.

TNT: What do you think of the tribute bands to a single group?

Mo’Royce: A tribute band has more opportunity to go deeper artistically than a general cover band.  If a tribute band goes really deep into the characters they are embodying, it can make for a great, kind of theatrical experience.  If they don’t go so deep, it can feel very hollow and dull.

TNT: Now with Napalm Records, can we see you in Europe or Spain?

Mo’Royce: Dark lord willing, yes!  We have been touring the UK for over 10 years.  Played Summer Breeze many times, Motocultor, toured a bit in France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium.  But we’d really like to do more touring throughout Europe, especially in Spain.  I have been to Spain post-tour many times and it’s pretty much my favorite place on earth.
