[Entrevista] NETHER; "Nether significa black metal agresivo, crudo pero melódico..."

Los belgas NETHER debutan con Between Shades and Shadows, que se editó el pasado 20 de Octubre por el sello Art Gates Records. Procedentes de otras bandas de la escena belga, NETHER es Black agresivo y duro, pero con ciertas dosis de melodía. Para saber más sobre las raíces de la banda, hablamos con J, bajo y voz, que nos desvela muchos detalles sobre el álbum y la esencia de la banda.

Primero de todo, agradeceros vuestro tiempo, y daros la enhorabuena por este debut. Es un buen disco.
Gracias por la entrevista! Y gracias por las amables palabras sobre nuestro álbum debut "Between Shades And Shadows"!

Os formáis a principios de 2019, a finales ya tenéis el disco grabado, y casi un año después lo edita el sello español Art Gates Records, en octubre de 2020. Supongo que tener el disco ya terminado, y tener que esperar tanto tiempo para tenerlo en la calle, habrá sido un poco desesperante para vosotros, no?
Para ser honesto, sí. Porque sabíamos lo que habíamos logrado al grabar las canciones, pero estamos agradecidos a los chicos de Art Gates Records que lo cogieron y lo lanzaron en todo el mundo. Así es como a veces hay que adaptarse a diferentes situaciones.

Igual es una pregunta tonta, pero en vuestro Facebook, aparece como que la página esta creada en 2016. No sé si es un error, ya que comenzasteis en 2019, o ya entonces (2016) estabas dando las primeras pinceladas de Nether…
No es una pregunta tonta en absoluto. P y yo tocamos en Signs Of Darkness, una banda melódica de black metal. Esta banda se separó, y P y yo queríamos volver a formar una nueva banda del mismo estilo pero más agresiva y más directa. Al principio tuvimos que buscar a los otros miembros de la banda y eso llevó algo de tiempo. En cierto momento se formó la banda y esa es la explicación.

Entiendo que el Covid-19 habrá frenado mucho vuestros planes iniciales, a todos los niveles, no?
De hecho sí, pero no somos los únicos. Para muchas bandas que lanzaron o planearon lanzar un álbum, muchas cosas han cambiado. Normalmente haces muchas promociones, programas y esas cosas, y eso no es posible hoy en día. Luego comienzas a promocionar tu banda en las redes, pero no eres el único, ni el más grande, ni el más famoso. Así que lanzar vídeos, video-lyrics,  o reproducciones, es lo único que podemos hacer en este momento. Además de hacer entrevistas como esta, con la esperanza de que los programas de radio recojan tu álbum y le den algo de tiempo. Bandas como Vreid, Gaerea o Dark Tranquility tienen un presupuesto mayor, y son capaces de grabar y retransmitir sesiones en directo. Es una pena que no seamos capaces de hacer ese tipo de cosas.

Con todas las limitaciones que esto ha ocasionado, y con un disco todavía caliente, en que punto os encontráis como banda?
Como te comentaba antes, estamos trabajando duro junto con Art Gates Records para darle al álbum la mayor atención posible. Estamos trabajando en material nuevo y estamos planeando, aunque con cuidado, algunas ideas futuras. Esperamos lanzar el disco en vinilo ya que los fans, los oyentes, lo piden, así que quién sabe...

“Between Shades and Shadows” es un disco muy directo, black metal, con influencias death, y con muchas influencias del black más primitivo. Vosotros venís cada uno de diferentes bandas de la escena black Belga. Que tiene Nether que no encontremos en esas otras bandas?
Solo puedo hablar de las bandas en las que he tocado. Signs Of Darkness era una banda de black metal melódico que era menos directa, menos agresiva, pero que encontró su fuerza en el uso de estructuras de canciones y riffs más complejos.
Otra banda que en la que toqué fue Insanity Reigns Supreme, una banda que ahora se ha transformado en Serpent's Oath (grabé las líneas de bajo para el álbum debut Nihil), fue una banda de death/doom que usaba riffs más monótonos y sólidos, y creó una atmósfera más oscura y doomy.  Nether es más para ser visto como el siguiente nivel de Signs Of Darkness pero de una manera más directa y menos compleja.

Hay varios detalles que destacaría de vuestro debut, tanto en la parte musical, como individual, y que me gustaría me comentaras...
A nivel individual, el trabajo de batería es brutal. Una apisonadora durante todo el disco.
Estás en lo cierto. Nuestro baterista B es extremadamente talentoso en todos los sentidos. Mientras trabajaba en las canciones, quedó claro al instante que se necesitaba un sonido de batería agresivo y brutal para dar a las canciones la potencia que necesitaban. A algunos críticos no les gusta esto en la producción de nuestro álbum de debut. Pero elegimos hacerlo de esta manera.

En lo musical, me gustan esos cambios de ritmo, que hacen que vuestro sonido no se haga repetitivo y lineal. Además, con los instrumentos justos habéis creado buenas canciones, con una dosis correcta de melodía.
Ese también es un tema importante. Queríamos crear precisamente eso. Canciones que sean brutales, agresivas pero melódicas cuando es necesario. El cambio y las variaciones de ritmo dan cierta dinámica a todas las canciones. Para mí, las melodías escritas son de suma importancia porque pueden dar ese toque extra.

Aunque la escena belga tiene, para mí, uno de los grandes nombres del black, Enthroned, vuestro sonido está más cercano al de bandas como Dissection, Belphegor o Marduk. Hay cada vez muchas más bandas de metal extremo en todo el Mundo, con diferentes texturas musicales y propuestas… Que crees que aporta Nether a la escena?
Debido al hecho de que los cuatro crecimos con la escena del black metal escandinavo, es en cierto modo lógico que se usen estas influencias y, de hecho, hay vínculos con bandas como Marduk, Dark Funeral, Dawn e incluso Belphegor o, a veces, con la escena del black metal griego. Debido a una mezcla de esas influencias, junto a un toque personal y, no menos importante, el concepto temático de las letras, esto hace que Nether sea algo único.

Supongo que en cierto modo, la portada del disco tenga que ver con el concepto de la banda. Existe una conexión entre esas raíces del árbol, incluso de la tierra en general, y las raíces de cada persona en vuestras letras?. Puedes profundizar en esto?
Es un concepto que se basa en historias y eventos personales míos, como principal escritos de las letras. Me resulta más fácil escribir y construir un tema de las vivencias de cada día. El árbol es el símbolo principal de esta idea de hablar de la vida diaria, cada árbol tiene sus propias raíces, bebe del suelo donde se encuentra. Por eso el árbol está en la portada y con más importancia en el logo de la banda. Si observa más de cerca ese logotipo, encontrará que en la "h" hay una entrada, un portal a estas raíces personales.
La persona de la portada y la contraportada está deambulando, parece que está perdida en la naturaleza, en la sociedad si quieres. Esas fotografías tomadas por el artista ucraniano Artem Gordienko simbolizan exactamente de qué trata el álbum. Todos somos personas que deambulamos por la vida como si estuviéramos perdidos. En ese momento tienes que volver a tus propias raíces personales, tu propio suelo personal. Para mí, personalmente, es uno de los conceptos más sólidos que hice y puse en la letra. Además, por primera vez trabajamos con dibujos y no con imágenes dibujadas como lo hicimos en mis bandas anteriores. Al utilizar este concepto como marco principal, puedes profundizar en la letra de cada canción y darle tu propia interpretación personal.

Cada día recibimos mucho material de nuevas formaciones, con diferentes propuestas dentro el black y el death. A que crees que se debe este crecimiento de bandas de metal extremo?
Como colaborador redactando reseñas en mi tiempo libre para el metalzine belga y neerlandés Zware Metalen.com, también veo muchos lanzamientos nuevos y no puedo encontrar una explicación razonable para esto, aparte del hecho de que la gente busca una forma de comunicarse, dar a luz sus ideas y esto se basa en un fundamento musical. Es bueno que aparezcan nuevas bandas, formaciones en el firmamento. El que tenga el formato más fuerte, musical y lírico, sobrevivirá.

Antes hablábamos del Covid. El estar parados os habrá dejado tiempo para pensar y trabajar en nuevo material, no?
A nosotros, como banda, nos gusta trabajar en el local de de ensayo, creando, escribiendo juntos. En este punto tenemos que hacerlo utilizando la “vía electrónica”. Pero bueno, esto es solo otro ajuste, no hay problema. Recientemente lanzamos una reproducción de batería de una de mis canciones favoritas del álbum, So All Adore Me. Entonces, si te gusta Nether y te gusta ver tocar la batería, ¡debes ver los fantásticos brazos y piernas de B!

Hello, first of all, thank you for your time, and congratulations on this debut. It's a good álbum.
Thans for this interview! And thanks for the kind words concerning our debutalbum “Between Shades And Shadows”!

You formed at the beginning of 2019, at the end you already had the record recorded, and almost a year later it is released by the Spanish label Art Gates Records, in October 2020. I suppose having the record already finished, and having to wait so long to have it on the street, it must have been a bit desperate for you, right?
To be honest, yes. Because we knew what we had achieved by recording the songs but hey we are thankfull to the guys in Art Gates Records who picked it up and released it world wide. That’s how it goes sometimes you have to adjust to different situations.

Maybe it's a silly question, but on your facebook, it appears that the page was created in 2016. I don't know if it's a mistake, since you started in 2019, or already then (2016) you were taking the first steps of nether.
Not a silly question at all. P and I played in Signs Of Darkness, a melodic black metal band. This band split up and P and I wanted to get back on track with a new band in the same style but more aggressive and more direct. At first we had to search for fellow bandmembers and that took some time. At a certain point in time the band was formed and that’s the explanation.

I understand that Covid-19 will have slowed down your initial plans a lot, at all levels, right?
Indeed, but we are not the only one. For lot’s of bands that released or planned to release an album lot’s of things have changed. Normally you do lot’s of promo – shows and stuff and that’s not possible nowadays. Then you start searching promoting your band on the electronical high way but you’re not the only one and not the biggest nor the most famous. So releasing video’s, lyric video’s, playthrough’s is the only thing we where up to at this time point. Besides that doiing interviews like this, hoping the radio-shows will pick up your album and giving it some airtime. Bands as Vreid, Gaerea or Dark Tranquillity have a bigger budget and are capable of recording and streaming live session’s it’s a pity we are not capable of doiing that sort of things.

With all the limitations that this has caused, and with an album still hot, where are you as a band?
Like abovementioned we are working hard together with Art Gates records to give the album as much attention as possible. We are working on new material and are planning, albeit carefully on some future idea’s. We hope to release the album on vinyl as the fans, listeners are asking for it so who knows...

“Between Shades and Shadows” is a very direct album, black metal, with death influences, and with many influences from the most primitive black. You each come from different bands from the Belgian black scene. What does Nether have that we can't find in those other bands?
I can only speak for the bands I played in. Signs Of Darkness was a melodic black metal band that was less direct, less agressive but found it’s strength in the more complex songstructures and riffs used. Another band I played in Insanity Reigns Supreme, a band that’s now transformed into Serpent’s Oath (I recorded the basslines for the debut album Nihil), was a death/doom band whitch used more monotonous, solid riffing and created a more dark, doomy atmosphere. nether is more to be seen as the next level of Signs Of Darkness but in a more direct and less complex way.

There are several details that I would highlight from your debut, both in the musical and individual part, and that I would like you to tell me ...
On an individual level, the drum work is brutal. A steamroller throughout the disc.
You have a point. Our drummer B is extremely talented in every way. While working on the songs it was instantly clear that an agressive yet brutal drumsound was needed to give the songs the power they needed. Some reviewers dislike this in the production of our debutalbum. But we chose to do it this way.

Musically, I like those changes of rhythm, which make your sound not become repetitive and linear. Also, with the right instruments you have created good songs, with a correct dose of melody.
That’s also an important issue. We wanted to create just that. Songs that are brutal, agressive yet melodic when needed. The change and variations in rythm gives a certain dynamic to all of the songs. For me in person, the melodies written are of utmost importance because they can give that extra twitch.

Although the Belgian scene has, for me, one of the big names in black, Enthroned, your sound is closer to other bands like Dissection, Belphegor or Marduk. There are more and more extreme metal bands around the world, with different musical textures and proposals ... What do you think Nether brings to the scene?
Due to the fact us four grew up with the Scandinavian black metal scene it’s in a way logic that these influences where used and indeed there are links with bands as Marduk, Dark Funeral, Dawn and even Belphegor or sometimes the Greek black metal scene. Due to a mixture of those influences, a personal touch and off importance also, the lyrical concept, this makes nether in way unique.

I guess in a way, the album cover has to do with the concept of the band. Is there a connection between those roots of the tree, even of the earth in general, and the roots of each person in your lyrics? Can you delve into this?
The concept is one that was created by me as a the main lyricwriter. It’s a concept that is build on personal stories and events. I find it more easy to write and construct a theme distillated from every day live. The tree is the main symbol of this every day live, every tree has it’s own roots, drinks from the soil where it stands in. That’s the reason the tree is on the cover and more important in the logo of the band. If you take a closer look at that logo you’ll find that in the “h” there’s an entry, a portal to these personal roots. The person on the front and backcover is wandering arround, look’s like he/she is lost in nature, society if you want. Those pictures taken by Ukranian artist Artem Gordienko exactly symbolizes what the album is about. We all are people who are wandering in life as if we are lost. At that point you have to return to your own personaal roots, your own personal soil. For me in person it’s one of the strongest concepts I made and put in the lyrics. Also, for the first time we worked with pictures and not drawn images like we did in my previous bands. By using this concept as a mainframe you can dig deeper in the lyrics of each song and give it your own personal interpretation.

 Every day we receive a lot of material from new formations, with different proposals in black and death. What do you think is the reason for this growth of extreme metal bands?
As a reviewer in my spare time for Dutch – Belgian metalzine Zware Metalen.com, I also see lots and tons of new releases comming in and I can not find a reasonable explantion for this other then the fact that people seek a way of communicating, give birth to their ideas and this build on a musical fundament. It’s a good thing that new bands, formations appear on the firmament. The one with the strongest format, music and lyrical wise, will survive.

Before we talked about the Covid. Standing still will have left you time to think and work on new material
We as a band like to work in the rehearsal room, creating, writing together. At this point we have to do it by using the “electronic high way”. But hey, this is just another adjustment, no problem. Recently we released a drum-playthrough of one of my favorite songs on the album, So All Adore Me. So if you’re into nether and into drumming you have to check out B’s fantastic arms and legs!

Finally, I would like you to give our readers a general definition of what Between Shades and Shadows is.
