Entrevista; IGNEA... "Grabamos este álbum entre sirenas de ataques aéreos y bombardeos" (Helle Bogdanova)

Los ucranianos IGNEA editaban el pasado 28 de Abril su tercer álbum “Dreams Of Lands Unseen” (Napalm Records), un disco con el que se muestran firmes en todos los sentidos. Para conocer mejor la situación actual de la banda, el concepto que rodea el álbum en cuanto a letras y música, su visita a Leyendas Del Rock, y algunas cosas más, nos pusimos en contacto con su vocalista Helle Bogdanova.

Antes de empezar a comentar los detalles de vuestro nuevo álbum “Dreams Of Lands Unseen”, me gustaría que los lectores que no conocen a IGNEA se hicieran una pequeña idea de quienes sois como banda que, incluyendo este nuevo trabajo, desde 2015 que arrancó vuestra carrera ya lleváis tres álbumes y un Ep. Con qué ideas y filosofía arrancais como banda?
De hecho, comenzamos en 2013 con el lanzamiento de nuestro primer EP Sputnik. En ese entonces, la banda se llamaba Parallax, y la cambiamos a IGNEA en 2015. Entonces, ahora tenemos 2 EP y 3 LP a nuestras espaldas. Comenzamos cuando casi todos los miembros de la banda tenían entre 18 y 20 años, así que diría que no había ninguna intención seria en ese momento. Más bien, se desarrolló a lo largo de los años, y espero que puedas escuchar esa evolución en nuestros discos. En este punto, no queremos que nuestra música sea algo más, por eso la enriquecemos con la narración profunda.

Vuestro espectro es muy amplio. Metal sinfonico con diversas capas y texturas, entre las que nos encontramos el death, el gotic, sonidos orientales… ¿Cuáles son vuestras influencias más directas?
Nuestro compositor es nuestro teclista, Yevhenii, quien también es el fundador de la banda. Y yo estoy a cargo de las letras y los conceptos. Vivimos juntos y, por lo tanto, compartimos muchas pasiones musicales. Diría que escuchas tantas cosas mezcladas en la música de IGNEA porque no solo escuchamos metal, sino también pop, música electrónica, bandas sonoras de películas, clásicos, etc. Nuestra mentalidad abierta es nuestra influencia más directa.

Vuestro sonido ha ido cambiando desde vuestros primeros trabajos hasta este, y el uso de sintetizadores se ha convertido en parte fundamental en él, con los que recreais atmósferas y situaciones adecuadas para cada canción. En que momento os disteis cuenta de que este era el sonido que queríais para IGNEA? o ha surgido de forma natural?
Respondí parcialmente a esta pregunta. Cuando la mente maestra de la banda es un teclista, lo más probable es que tenga más teclas y sintetizadores en la mezcla 🙂 También fue parte de nuestro sonido desde el principio, y creo que está aquí para quedarse.

Primero el Covid, después la lamentable situación por la que pasa Ucrania. Y pese a ello, IGNEA a tenido fuerzas para lanzar 2 álbumes y un Ep. Como han sido estos últimos 3 años para vosotros? porque también hay que recordar que vuestro anterior trabajo The Realms of Fire and Death se lanzó en medio de la pandemia.
Los últimos tres años fueron tan intensos para nosotros que a veces una persona no encuentra tanto en el transcurso de la vida. Hemos estado constantemente enfrentando desafíos no solo como personas, sino también como banda. Primero estar sentado en casa durante la pandemia, no poder viajar, perder a nuestros seres queridos por covid, luego, lo que es peor, despertarse con el sonido de los misiles volando sobre nuestras cabezas, estar en modo de supervivencia y nuevamente, perder amigos en la línea del frente. Lo que es peor, todo esto sigue en curso… Solo puedo decir que si logramos permanecer como banda y lanzar música a pesar de todo esto, IGNEA está aquí para quedarse y, tal vez, realmente nos gusta lo que hacemos.

Después de tantos meses con esta complicada situación en vuestro país, qué sensaciones tenéis, que esperanzas tenéis para un final de este absurdo?
Creemos en nuestras fuerzas armadas y en la victoria de Ucrania. Es muy difícil predecir cuándo sucederá, y esto es lo que a veces nos deprime. Pero luego nos levantamos y seguimos adelante. Nuestro país ha pasado por tanto que no podemos parar ahora, tenemos que ir hasta el final. Y es por eso que, como banda, seguimos contándole al mundo sobre la guerra y donando una gran parte de nuestros ingresos al ejército.

“Dreams Of Lands Unseen” sale el 28 de abril con Napalm Records. Supongo que habrá sido difícil componer música, ensayar, grabar, en un entorno tan hostil, y no lo digo por temas de logística y demás, si no, mentalmente para vosotros debe ser complicado abstraerse de lo que estais viviendo y crear canciones. Como se ha gestado este disco?
Tuvimos algo de suerte de haber completado este álbum en términos de composición antes de que comenzara la guerra, ya que ahora nos sentimos bastante vacíos por dentro, es como un vacío y una falta total de inspiración. Grabamos este álbum entre sirenas de ataques aéreos y bombardeos. Finalmente, filmamos 3 videos en 2 meses en medio de los apagones más largos y los ataques con misiles masivos más grandes en Kiev. Todavía no puedo entender cómo lo hicimos y estoy muy agradecida con nuestros equipos de producción profesionales que nos ayudaron a lograrlo. Todo esto, sin mencionar nuestro estado emocional, por supuesto. No se lo deseo a nadie.

El álbum es conceptual y refleja la vida de la fotógrafa y documentalista ucraniana Sofia Yablonska. Podrías profundizar un poco sobre ello. En qué parte de su vida os habéis centrado?
Este álbum se centra principalmente en sus viajes, ya que esto es lo que describió en sus viajes. Cuando supe de Yablonska, me aseguré de leer todo lo que pude encontrar, y cuando escuchas nuestras canciones, algunas de ellas incluso tienen frases escritas por Sofía. "Dunes" trata sobre el viaje de Sofía a Marruecos, "Camera Obscura", "The Golden Shell" y "Opiumist", tratan sobre el período chino de sus viajes. Algunas canciones, como "Incurable Disease", son más personales para mí. Esta refleja mi pasión por todo lo marino, que también fue compartida por Yablonska. Estaba fascinada por los viajes por mar, la forma en que operan los barcos, la forma en que los marineros se sienten cuando están trabajando.

Nomad's Luck fue el primer single del disco. Un corte muy oriental en cuanto a sonido, que ha tenido casi 90.000 visualizaciones en youtube. Qué sensaciones os ha dejado la reacción ante esta nueva canción por parte de vuestros fans?
Nomad's Luck trata sobre todos los peligros de viajar en general, y los arreglos tribales y orientales muestran la dirección del viaje de Yablonska. También ha sido parte del sonido de IGNEA durante un tiempo, por lo que todo encaja a la perfección. Fue el primer sencillo que lanzamos, y me alegro de que nuestros fans estuvieran muy complacidos con la canción, y también fue un comienzo perfecto para la historia que estábamos contando: incómoda, peligrosa, pero algo con lo que podrías bailar.

El álbum contiene dos canciones cantadas en vuestra lengua materna. Supongo que, ahora más que nunca, estas dos canciones pueden ser una muestra por vuestra parte de reivindicar vuestras raíces y de dónde venís?
Hubo varias razones para eso: 1) Sofia Yablonska y todos los miembros de nuestra banda son de Ucrania, por lo que en este álbum tenía mucho sentido mostrar nuestras raíces ucranianas; 2) Sofía tenía una gran habilidad con las palabras, y quería dejar ciertas frases tal como las escribió en sus cuadernos de viaje; 3) antes, ya teníamos una canción en ucraniano, y a nuestros fans les gustó mucho, así que escribimos algunas más con mucho gusto.

“The Golden Shell” y “Opiumist” muestran esa clara influencia sobre la cultura China. Si bien el álbum en general mantiene ese aire de banda sonora de una película, creo que en estas dos canciones conseguís transportar al oyente.
Sí, creo que estas canciones son las más atmosféricas, por su temática, y porque agregamos algunos sonidos adicionales para fortalecer esta experiencia inmersiva: los sonidos de las olas, el mercado chino, fumar opio, etc. Todo esto suma la sensación de un OST.

“Opiumist”, que es la más larga del disco y una de mis canciones favoritas del álbum, cuenta con el vocalista Tuomas Saukkonen de WOLFHEART. Me gustaría saber cómo surge esta colaboración, y que profundizarais en ese juego de palabras que habéis utilizado en el título de la canción.
"Opiumist" es una canción sobre la experiencia de Yablonska de fumar opio con un anciano chino. La palabra consiste básicamente en “opio” y “niebla”. Queríamos crear la atmósfera de sus conversaciones interculturales, que ocurrían cada vez que fumaban. La voluntad de agregar gruñidos masculinos profundos nos llevó a contactar a Tuomas a través de Napalm Records (ambas bandas están en el mismo sello) y tuvo la amabilidad de aceptar contribuir. Todavía no nos hemos conocido en persona, pero espero que algún día lo hagamos.

La portada de Dreams of Lands Unseen es como un cuadro en el que vemos el paso del tiempo reflejado en él. Qué intentas reflejar con esta portada y el título del álbum?
La portada del álbum muestra que algo sucedió aquí antes: vemos el desierto pero también los restos del barco, por lo que tu imaginación puede decir que tal vez hubo agua aquí antes. También ves el faro, uno real ubicado en Ucrania, que muestra el camino a casa y es un símbolo de la nostalgia que a veces siente un vagabundo. En cuanto al título del álbum, refleja la historia detrás del álbum: hemos creado canciones en las que soñamos con tierras no vistas por nosotros pero vistas por Sofia Yablonska.

Estáis anunciados para tocar en Leyendas Del Rock, uno de los festivales más entrañables de España. Como se presenta para vosotros este año en cuanto a actuaciones, y que supone para IGNEA poder participar en este festival?
Como banda ucraniana, enfrentamos muchos desafíos cuando se trata de dejar nuestro país y tocar en el extranjero. Nos sentimos honrados de unirnos a un festival tan increíble y cruzamos los dedos para poder tocar allí. Ha pasado bastante tiempo desde que hemos estado en España, y nos encantaría volver allí también. No se nos ocurre mejor lugar para eso que Leyendas del Rock.

Por nuestra parte sólo queda daros la enhorabuena por “Dreams Of Lands Unseen”, nos parece un fantástico trabajo. Y sobre todo, nuestros deseos de que por fin, pueda solucionarse la situación por la que está viviendo vuestro país. Cualquier cosa que creáis que debéis resaltar de vuestro nuevo disco y que no hayamos tratado, o cualquier mensaje que querías transmitir a nuestros lectores, sois libres de hacerlo.

Before we start talking about the details of your new album “Dreams Of Lands Unseen”, I would like to get a little idea of who they are as a band for the readers who don't know IGNEA, including this new album. Since 2015 when your career started, you already composed three albums and one Ep. As a band, what ideas and philosophy do you start with?
Helle: We actually started in 2013 with the release our our first EP Sputnik. Back then, the band was called Parallax, and we changed it to IGNEA in 2015. So, now we’ve got 2 EPs and 3 LPs behind our backs. We started when pretty much all band members were in their 18-20s so I’d say, there wasn’t any serious intention back then. Rather, it developed through years, and I hope that you can hear that evolution in our records. At this point, we wan’t our music to be something more, that’s why we enrich it with the deep story-telling.

You have a wide musical spectrum. Symphonic metal with different layers and textures, including death, gothic, and oriental sounds, etc... What are your most direct influences?
Our composer is our keyboardist, Yevhenii, who’s also the founder of the band. And I’m in charge of lyrics and concepts. We live together, and hence, we share a lot of musical passions. I’d say, you hear so many things mixed in IGNEA’s music because we don’t only listen to metal, but also to pop, electronic music, movie soundtracks, classics, etc. Our open-mindness is our most direct influence.

Your sound has been changing from your first works to this one, the use of synthesizers has become a fundamental part of it, with which you recreate atmospheres and situations suitable for each song. At what point did you realize that this was the sound you wanted for IGNEA? Or did it just came naturally?
I partially replied to this question. When the band’s mastermind is a keyboardist, it’ll most likely have more keys and synthesizers in the mix 🙂 It was also part of our sound from the very beginning, and I think, it’s here to stay.

First the Covid, then the unfortunate situation that Ukraine is going through. And despite this, IGNEA had the strength to release 2 albums and an Ep. How have these last three years been for you? Because we must remember that your previous work "The Realms of Fire and Death" was released in the middle of the pandemic.
The last three years were so intense for us that sometimes a person doesn’t encounter so much over the course of life. We’ve been constantly facing challenges not only as people, but also as a band. First sitting at home during the pandemic, not being able to travel, losing our close ones to covid, then, even worse — waking up to the sounds of missiles flying above our heads, being in a survival mode, and again, losing friends on the frontline. What’s worse — all of this is still ongoing… I can only say that if we managed to stay as a band and release music despite all of this, IGNEA is here to stay, and, perhaps, we really like what we do.

After so many months with this complicated situation in your country, what are your feelings? What are your hopes for an end to this absurd situation?
We believe in our armed forces and Ukraine’s victory. It’s very hard to predict when it happens, and this is what sometimes brings our hands down. But then we get up and move on. Our country has been through so much that we cannot stop now, we’ve got to go until the end. And that’s why, as a band, we keep telling the world about the war and donating a big part of our income to the army.

"Dreams Of Lands Unseen" is out April 28 via Napalm Records. I suppose it must have been difficult to compose music, rehearse, record, in such a hostile environment, and I'm not saying this for logistical reasons and so on, rather mentally, it must be difficult for you to get away from what you're experiencing and create songs. How was this album been created?
We were somewhat lucky to have completed this album in terms of composing before the war rolled-out, as now, we feel quite empty inside, it’s like a void, and total lack of inspiration. We recorded this album in-between air raid sirens and shelling. Finally, we filmed 3 videos in 2 months in the middle of the longest blackouts and biggest massive missile attacks on Kyiv. I still cannot understand how we did it, and I’m very grateful to our professional production teams who helped us to achieve it. All this — not to mention our emotional state, of course. I wouldn’t wish it for anyone.

This is conceptual album and it reflects on the life of the Ukrainian photographer and documentary filmmaker Sofia Yablonska. Could you go a little deeper on that? In which part of her life have you focused on?
This album is mostly focused on her travels, as this is what she described in her travelouges. When I learned about Yablonska, I made sure to read everything I could find, and when you listen to our songs, some of them even have phrases written by Sofia. Dunes is about Sofia’s travel to Morocco, Camera Obscura, The Golden Shell and Opiumist, — are about the Chinese period of her travels. Some songs, like Incurable Disease, are more personal to me. This one reflects my passion for everything marine, which was also shared by Yablonska. She was fascinated by sea travels, the way vessels operate, the way seamen feel when they’re working.

Nomad's Luck was the first single from the album. A very oriental cut in terms of sound, which has had almost 90,000 views on YouTube. What sensations has the reaction of your fans to this new song left to you?
Nomad’s Luck is about all the dangers of traveling in general, and the tribal and oriental arrangements show the direction of Yablonska’s traveling. It also has been part of IGNEA’s sound for a while, so everything matches perfectly. It was the first single we released, and I’m glad that our fans very pleased with the song, and it also was a perfect start to the story we were telling: uneasy, dangerous, but something you could dance along with.

The album contains two songs sung in your native language. I suppose that, now more than ever, these two songs can be a sample from you to claim your roots and where do you come from?
There were several reasons for that: 1) Sofia Yablonska and all our band members are from Ukraine, so on this album, it made perfect sense to showcase our Ukrainian roots; 2) Sofia had a great way with words, and I wanted to leave certain phrases just as she wrote them in her travelogues; 3) before, we already had a song in Ukrainian, and our fans liked it a lot, so we wrote some more gladly.

"The Golden Shell" and "Opiumist" show this clear influence on Chinese culture. Although the album in general maintains that air of a movie soundtrack, I think that in these two songs you manage to transport this to the listener. What do you think about this?
Yes, I think that these songs are the most atmospheric, because of their theme, and because we added some additional sounds to strengthen this immersive experience: the sounds of waves, Chinese market, smoking opium, etc. All this adds up to the feeling of an OST.

“Opiumist”, is the longest one on the record and one of my personal favorite song on the album, features WOLFHEART vocalist Tuomas Saukkonen. I would like to know how this collaboration came, please tell us more about that word play that you have used in the title of the song.
Opiumist is a song about Yablonska’s experience of smoking opium with an old Chinese guy. The word basically consists of “opium” and “mist”. We wanted to create the atmosphere of their intercultural conversations, which happened every time after they smoked. Willing to add deep male growls led us to contacting Tuomas through Napalm Records (both bands are on the same label) and he was kind to agree to contribute. We haven’t met in person yet but I hope we will someday.

The cover art of "Dreams of Lands Unseen" is like a painting in which we can see the passage of time reflected in it. What are you trying to reflect with the cover art and the album´s title?
The album artwork shows that something has happened here before: we see the desert but also the remains of the ship, so your imagination can say that maybe there was water here before. You also see the lighthouse — a real one located in Ukraine — that shows the way home and is a symbol of homesickness that sometimes a vagabond feels. As for the album title, it reflects the story behind the album: we’ve created songs in which we dream of lands unseen by us but seen by Sofia Yablonska.

You´ve been booked to play at Leyendas Del Rock, one of the most beloved and most important festival in Spain. How does this year look for you in terms of performances, and what does it mean for IGNEA to be able to perform at this kind of festival?
As a Ukrainian band, we face a lot of challenges when it comes to leaving our country and playing shows abroad. We’re honoured to join such an amazing festival and we keep our fingers crossed that we can actually play there. It’s been quite a while since we’ve been to Spain, and we’d love to return there too. We cannot think of a better place for that than Leyendas del Rock.

For our part, all that remains is to congratulate you on “Dreams Of Lands Unseen”, we think it's a fantastic job. And above all, our wishes that the situation your country is experiencing can finally are resolved.
