Entrevista: Frank Thorwarth, bajista de TANKARD: "Éramos un par de jóvenes y estúpidos que bebían y destruían habitaciones de hotel"

Con la excusa de la salida al mercado este viernes 25 de febrero de la reedición de los primeros trabajos de la Tankard con Noise Records  (ver noticia Aquí) hemos querido hacerle algunas preguntas a la banda y esto es lo que nos ha respondido uno de los fundadores del grupo allá por 1982, el bajista Frank Thorwart.

Primero quería agradecerte el que nos dediques un rato de tu tiempo y segundo, darte la enhorabuena por estos 40 años de historia.

TNT: ¿Cómo lleva la banda estos días tan extraños de la pandemia del Covid? ¿Habéis podido realizar algún concierto? ¿Cómo os mantenéis en contacto con los fans?

Frank: Hola Juanjo, aquí Frank. Muchas gracias por las felicitaciones.

Bueno, tienes razón, estamos viviendo tiempos difíciles hoy en día, pero sin embargo, tratamos de sacar lo mejor de ellos. Afortunadamente estamos todos bien y ningún miembro de la banda se contagió de Covid. Actualmente estamos trabajando en un nuevo álbum que se lanzará a finales de este año y esto nos mantiene ocupados con la banda.

Después de 40 años, es realmente extraño para nosotros quedarnos en casa todos los fines de semana y no viajar de un espectáculo a otro. Al comienzo de la pandemia fue genial relajarse un rato, pero después de un par de meses se volvió muy aburrido y esperamos que la vida normal vuelva pronto y podamos volver al escenario. Como solo tuvimos 5 shows en 2020 y 8 en 2021, es realmente difícil mantenerse en contacto con los fans, pero hacemos todo lo posible.

TNT: Este 25 de febrero sacáis una magnífica reedición de vuestros 7 primeros álbums con Noise Records, así como material en vídeo: “For A Thousand Beers”. ¿Cómo surgió esta idea?

Frank: Oh, esa es una buena pregunta y realmente no puedo recordar a quién se le ocurrió esta idea.
Es un gran honor para nosotros que se lance algo tan grande como esto. Todavía recuerdo los "Tiempos de Noise" ya que este fue el comienzo de nuestra carrera.

TNT: Seguro que reeditar vuestros viejos discos os ha traído muchos recuerdos. ¿Podrías intentar contarme alguna anécdota divertida o recuerdo de cada uno de tus primeros siete álbumes? ¿O qué significó cada disco para la banda?

Frank:

1986 Zombie Attack:

Éramos un par de jóvenes y estúpidos que bebían y destruían habitaciones de hotel, etc. El hotel nos echó y tuvimos que pagar las reparaciones...

1987 Chemical Invasion:

Fue entonces cuando se puso serio y nos dimos cuenta de que algo podía surgir.

1988 The Morning After:

Me rompí la mano izquierda y me quitaron el vendaje de yeso solo 2 semanas antes de entrar al estudio. Me dolió mucho y tuve que aprenderme las canciones directamente antes de grabar......

1990 The Meaning of Life:

Estos fueron los años en los que bebí demasiado y perdí la memoria... 🙂

1992 Stone Cold Sober:

Sí, teníamos algunas canciones divertidas como "Centerfold" y "Freibier".

1994 Two-Faced:

Recuerdo la letra de "Cities In Flames". Cuando escribimos nuevas canciones y Gerre crea las líneas de la melodía antes de escribir la letra final, usa algunas frases que no tienen sentido. Aquí tomamos algunas de estas frases divertidas como las finales.

1995 The Tankard:

Es más melódico y si no recuerdo mal las críticas no eran muy buenas en ese momento, pero todavía me gusta mucho este álbum.

TNT: ¿Habéis pensado en hacer conciertos especiales solo tocando canciones de estos álbumes (como Iron Maiden durante décadas) o celebraciones de aniversario tocando álbumes completos?

Frank: No, nada como esto está planeado todavía.

TNT: ¿Qué esperaís de este lanzamiento? ¿Cuál es el propósito de lanzar estos álbumes ahora?

Frank: Nada especial esperado. Tal vez sea el momento adecuado para recordar el comienzo.

TNT: Hablemos de influencias y bandas que te gustan: ¿Cuáles fueron las bandas que te influyeron en los primeros días y cuáles son las que escuchas hoy?

Frank: Me encantó en ese momento. AC/DC, Motorhead, NWOBHM, Exodus, Slayer y y y... Hoy escucho casi todo, pero mi favorito son cosas como Nevermore, etc.

TNT: Con la visión que dan los años, ¿puedes explicarnos qué cambios has visto en el mundo del Thrash desde 1982 hasta ahora?

Frank: Hay muchas más grandes bandas hoy que en el 82 y muchos de los viejos siguen rockeando. Lo que realmente me gusta es que todavía hay jóvenes que escuchan y TOCAN Thrash Metal. ¡¡Nunca morirá!!

TNT: ¿Qué opinas de la escena Thrash española con bandas como Angelus Apatrida o Crisix?

Frank: Gran material y muchas buenas bandas por llegar.

TNT: Tu último álbum de estudio “One Foot in the Grave” es de 2017, ¿cómo van las nuevas canciones? ¿Cuándo nos darás otro álbum?

Frank: Como dije al principio, actualmente estamos grabando un nuevo álbum que se lanzará a finales de este año. El título del álbum será "Pawlow's Dawgs".

TNT: ¿Teneís planes de hacer una gira este año? ¿Podremos veros en España?

Frank: Bueno, realmente hemos planeado muchos espectáculos este año, pero no sabemos si alguno de estos funcionará de acuerdo con Covid. Actualmente no puedo confirmar un show en España.

TNT: Gracias una vez más por atender a TNT Radio Rock y espero verte pronto en Barcelona.

Frank: Gracias. Seguid rockeando y sí, sería genial volver a Barcelona.

First, I wanted to thank you for dedicating some of your time to us, and second, to congratulate you on these 40 years of history.

TNT: How is the band handling these strange days of the Covid pandemic? Have you been able to perform any concerts? How do you keep in touch with the fans?

Frank: Hi Juanjo, Frank here. Thanks a lot for the congrats.

Well, you are right, we are living in difficult times today, but nevertheless, we try to make the best out of it. Luckily we are all fine and no member of the band was infected by Covid Currently we are working on a new album which will be released later this year and this keeps us busy with the band. After 40 years it's really strange for us to stay at home all the weekends and not traveling from show to show. At the beginning of the pandemic it was cool to relax for a while, but after a couple of month it became heavily boring and we hope that normal life will come back soon and we can go back on stage. As we had just 5 shows in 2020 and 8 in 2021 it's really difficult to stay in contact with the fans but we try our best.

TNT: This February 25th you will release a magnificent reissue of your first 7 albums with Noise Records, as well as video material: “For A Thousand Beers”. How did this idea come about?

Frank: Oh, that's a good question and I really can't remember who came up with this idea.
It's a huge honour for us that a big thing like this will be released. I still remember the "Noise times" as this was the beginning of our carreer.

TNT: Surely having your old albums reissued again has brought back many memories. Could you try to tell me some funny anecdote or memory from each of your first seven albums? Or what did each record mean to the band? (Only a few words)

Frank:
1986 Zombie Attack:
We were a couple of young an stupid boys drinking and destroying hotel rooms etc. The hotel kicked us out and we had to pay the repairs.......

1987 Chemical Invasion: That's when it became serious and we realized thet something could come up.

1988 The Morning After: I broke my left hand and the plaster bandage was removed just 2 weekes before I have entered the studio. I hurt strongly and I had to learn the songs directly before recording......

1990 The Meaning of Life: These were the years I drunk too much and lost my memory... 🙂

1992 Stone Cold Sober: Yeah, we had some funny songs like Centerfold and Freibier on it.

1994 Two-Faced: I remeber the lyrics of „Cities In Flames“. When we write new songs and Gerre creates the melody lines before the final lyrics are written, he uses some phrases which make no sense. Here we took some of these funny phrases as the final ones.

1995 The Tankard: It's more melodic and if I remember correctly the reviews where not very good at the time, but I still like this album very much.

TNT: Have you thought about doing special concerts just playing songs from these albums (like Iron Maiden for decades) or anniversary celebrations playing entire albums?

Frank: No, nothing like this is planned yet.

TNT: What do you expect with this release? What is the purpose of releasing these albums now?

Frank: : Nothing special expected. It's maybe just the right time to remember the beginning.

TNT: Let's talk about influences and bands that you like: What were the bands that influenced you in the early days and what are the ones you listen to today?

Frank: I loved at the time. AC/DC, Motorhead, NWOBHM, Exodus, Slayer and and and........ Today I listen to almost everything but my favour is stuff like Nevermore etc.

TNT: With the vision that the years give, can you explain us what changes you have seen in the world of Thrash from 1982 to now?

Frank: So many more great bands today than in 82 and a lot of the old guys still keep on rocking. What I really like is that there still coming up young people listen and PLAY Thrash Metal. It will never die !!

TNT: What do you think of the Spanish Thrash scene with bands like Angelus Apatrida or Crisix?

Frank: Great stuff and a lot of good band coming up.

TNT: Your last studio album “One Foot in the Grave” is from 2017, how are the new songs going? When will you give us another album?

Frank: Like I said at the begining we are currently recording new album which will be released later this year. The album title will be "Pawlow's Dawgs".

TNT: Do you have plans to tour this year? Can we see you in Spain?

Frank: Well, we have really planned a lot of shows this year, but we don't know if any of these will work according to Covid. Currently I can't confirm a show in Spain.
