Entrevista FEUERSCHWANZ: "Te sientes realmente estúpido al actuar sin público"

Con la excusa de la salida de su directo "Die letzte Schlacht", este 6 de agosto, estuvimos hablando con Hodi, bajista de FEUERSCHWANZ sobre la historia de la banda y su voluntad por expandir su propuesta más allá del centro de Europa. La banda alemana de folk metal goza de gran fama en su país, pero no es lo suficientemente conocida en el resto del continente, de ahí que ahora quieran a darse a conocer también por España.

TNT: - Gracias por dedicar tu tiempo y enhorabuena por tu disco. FEUERSCHWANZ es una banda muy conocida en Alemania, con más de 15 años de experiencia pero creo que para el público español sois bastante desconocidos. ¿Puedes explicar a los lectores españoles quién son FEUERSCHWANZ?

Hodi: Tocamos Folkmetal con letras sobre la época medieval y la fantasía. ¡En el escenario y en nuestras canciones celebramos la vida en todo su esplendor!

TNT: En vuestros primeros días os etiquetaban "Comedy Folk". ¿Cómo ha sido la evolución de la banda? ¿Qué "etiqueta" os define mejor en este momento?

Hodi: Sí, comenzamos como una especie de parodia en la escena del folkrock. Pero a lo largo de los años creamos nuestra propia visión de nuestra música. Tocamos muchos shows, mejoramos nuestros instrumentos y siempre queríamos más, así que la música de los primeros días era demasiado aburrida después de tantos años, ¡tuvimos que crear algo más desafiante!

TNT: -Al buscar información para preparar esta entrevista he encontrado muy poca sobre vosotros en inglés y casi imposible en español. He tenido que recurrir al traductor de Google. ¿Habéis pensado en promocionar más vuestro trabajo en otros idiomas? Y, también, la típica pregunta: ¿Planeáis grabar más canciones en inglés como “I See Fire?

Hodi: Desde los dos últimos álbumes, el interés internacional ha crecido, por lo que este es un problema completamente nuevo para nosotros. Con Napalm Records de nuestro lado, ¡por supuesto que intentaremos promocionarnos mejor fuera de Alemania! ¡En el nuevo álbum, también habrá algunas canciones adicionales en inglés!

TNT:   - Hace unos días Napalm anunció que Hans estaría tocando en un nuevo proyecto The Dark Side of The Moon, además de FEUERSCHWANZ ¿en qué otras bandas os podemos escuchar?

Hodi: Toco en una banda de folkrock llamada "dArtagnan" - el estilo musical es más folk y rock, nada de metal. Nos centramos en melodías tradicionales y letras de temática histórica sobre el período del Renacimiento, especialmente la guerra de los 30 años.

TNT:   - Pasemos a "Die letzte Schlacht". ¿Qué buscáis con este DVD-Blue Ray en directo?

Hodi: Estoy muy emocionado de revivir esas dos noches gloriosas en tiempos de pandemia. Hay dos conciertos en este bluray: el "11OA" del 20 de junio y "Die letzte Schlacht" del 21 de enero. Ambos programas se llevaron a cabo sin público, pero con elementos especiales, grandes piroefectos y secuencias de películas.

TNT:  - "Die letzte Schlacht" es un gran éxito en directo. ¿Fue difícil elegir las canciones? ¿Será el repertorio similar al que llevaréis en vuestra gira?

Hodi: Siempre intentamos elegir lo mejor que tenemos para ofrecer. No importa en qué álbum se elijan las canciones, solo tratamos de darle a la audiencia lo mejor. Así que el set de gira será bastante similar, creo. Pero tal vez haya canciones mejores y más nuevas ...

TNT:  - ¿Cómo fue actuar sin público?

Hodi: Te sientes realmente estúpido, espero no volver a hacerlo nunca más, honestamente. Pero también es realmente un desafío como músico. ¡Y me gustan los desafíos!

TNT: - Habéis tenido grandes colaboraciones en el escenario: Angus McFife (GLORYHAMMER), miembros de Saltatio Mortis y Patty Gurdy, cuéntanos cómo fue la experiencia. ¿Cómo los convenciste?

Hodi: ¡Sólo tuvimos qu preguntarles! No fue necesario convencer a nadie, todos estaban realmente hambrientos de tocar música durante este jodido tiempo de encierro.

TNT:   - Esta fue la segunda vez que actuasteis sin audiencia en el castillo de Abenberg. El primero fue presentar su magnífico disco "Das Elfte Gebot" y ahora este DVD. ¿Continuaréis haciendo transmisiones en vivo cada vez que lanceis un álbum?

Hodi: Espero que podamos tocar en un espectáculo tan grande CON audiencia y transmisión en vivo, ¡eso sería realmente genial!

TNT:  - Cambiando de tema, ¿habéis trabajado en material nuevo? ¿Cómo lleváis la continuación de “Das Elfte Gebot”?

Hodi: Por supuesto. ¡Ahora mismo, estamos en el estudio enfocándonos en dar el siguiente paso después de este álbum! Va a ser salvaje.

TNT:  - Tenéis muchos conciertos programados, pero casi nunca salís de Alemania. ¿Habéis pensado en bajar a España en el futuro?

Hodi: Si España nos demanda, vendremos.

TNT:   Thank you for dedicating your time and congratulations on your album. FEUERSCHWANZ is a very well known band in Germany, with more than 15 years of experience but I think that for the Spanish public you are quite unknown. Can you explain to Spanish readers who FEUERSCHWANZ is?

Hodi: We play Folkmetal with liyrics about medieval times and fantasy. On stage and in our songs we celebrate life in all its glory!

TNT:    - In your early days you were labeled "Comedy Folk". How has the evolution of the band been? What "label" defines you best at the moment?

Hodi: Yes, we started as some kind of parody on the folkrock scene. But over the years we created our very own vision of our music. We played lots of shows, became better on our instruments and always wanted more – só the music of the early days was just too boring after so many years, we had to create something more challenging!

TNT:    - When looking for information to prepare this interview I have found very little information about you in English and almost impossible in Spanish. I have had to resort to the Google translator. Have you thought about promoting your work more in other languages? And, also, the typical question: Are you planning to record more songs in English like “I See Fire?

Hodi: Since the last two albums, international interest has grown só this is a complete new problem for us! With Napalm Records on our side, we will of course try to promote ourselves better outside of Germany! On the new álbum, there will be some bonus coversongs in english, too!

TNT:  - A few days ago Napalm announced that Hans would be playing in a new project The Dark Side of The Moon, In addition to FEUERSCHWANZ in what other bands can we listen to you?

Hodi: I play in a folkrock band called “dArtagnan” – the musical style is more into folk and rock, no metal at all. We focus on traditional melodies and historical-themed lyrics about the Rennaissance period, especially the 30 years war.

TNT:   - Let's move on to "Die letzte Schlacht". What are you looking for with this live Blue Ray-DVD?

Hodi: I’m really excited to revive those two glorious nights during pandemic times. There are two concerts on this bluray – the “11OA”  from june ‘20 and “Die letzte Schlacht” from January ‘21. Both shows were played without audience, but with special showelements, big pyroeffects and movie sequences!

TNT:   - "Die letzte Schlacht" is a great hits live. Was it difficult to choose the songs? Will the repertoire be similar to the one you will be taking on your tour?

Hodi: We always try to choose the best we have to offer. No matter of which álbum the songs are chosen, we just try to give the audience just the best. So the tour-set will be quite similar, i think. But maybe there will be newer, better songs...

TNT: - What was it like to act without an audience?

Hodi: It feels really stupid, i hope never to do it again honestly. But it’s also really challenging as a musician. And i like challenges!

TNT:    - You have had great collaborations on stage: Angus McFife (GLORYHAMMER), members of Saltatio Mortis and Patty Gurdy, tell us how the experience was. How did you convince them?

Hodi: We just asked! It was’nt necessary to cinvince anyone, they were all really hungry for playing music during this fucked up lockdown time.

TNT:  - This was the second time you performed without an audience at Abenberg Castle. The first was to present your magnificent album "Das Elfte Gebot" and now for this DVD. Are you going to continue doing live streaming every time you release an album?

Hodi: I hope we can play such a big show WITH audience AND livestreaming, that would be really cool!

TNT: - Changing the subject, have you worked on new material? How are you doing the continuation of “Das Elfte Gebot”?

Hodi: Of course. Right now, we are at the studio focusing on making the next step after this album! It’s gonna be wild.

TNT: - You have many concerts scheduled, but you hardly ever leave Germany. Have you thought about going down to Spain in the future?

Hodi: If Spain demands us, we will come.
