Entrevista; DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT, "Finisterre" es el álbum que representa el mejor sonido de la banda." (Nikita Kamprad)

La banda alemana de black metal DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT regresa este 25 de agosto con un nuevo álbum llamado "Finisterre", que nada tiene que ver el título con ese encantador pueblo gallego. Dos años después de su "Stellar", llegan ahora con un álbum más definido en cuanto a sonido, más personal y con un Nikita Kamprad más asentado en ese nueva faceta como vocalista, además de encargarse de casi la totalidad de las composiciones y grabación de todos los instrumentos, a excepción de batería. Con Nikita mantuvimos una interesante charla para que nos cuente en primera persona como es "Finisterre", y de su próxima visita a Madrid y Barcelona a finales de Septiembre y Octubre.

Han pasado 2 años desde “Stellar” a este cuarto trabajo “Finisterre”, Como han sido para vosotros estos meses?
El lanzamiento de Stellar fue bastante importante para nosotros, ya que fue el primer lanzamiento de una gran marca internacional y nos permitió llegar a una audiencia más amplia, más internacional. Fue definitivamente como un nivel para nosotros y un gran paso en nuestra carrera. Con su lanzamiento tuvimos nuestra primera gira europea con nuestros compatriotas Downfall of Gaia. Fueron 25 espectáculos seguidos sin un día de descanso, por lo que es bastante agotador pero, muy exitoso. Después de eso tuvimos algunas grandes apariciones en Hellfest, Graspop y también en Resurrection Fest en España. Nos encantó y allí nos alojamos durante dos días disfrutando del mar y la comida (buenos momentos!). En marzo / abril de 2016, finalmente hicimos nuestro primer tour de cabeza por Europa seguido de festivales como el infame Wacken Open Air en Alemania y otra gira por España y Francia con Moonspell de Portugal en diciembre de 2016. Después de esta gira entramos al estudio para grabar "Finisterre" que nos llevó alrededor de dos meses para terminar. Así que este tiempo entre "Stellar" y "Finisterre" fue bastante ocupado y turbulento también, porque nuestro bajista Giuliano dejó la banda justo antes del show de Wacken, lo cual fue bastante deprimente para toda la banda. Pero ahora estamos más fuertes que nunca, listos para salir con "Finisterre" y volver a la carretera en septiembre / octubre!

Estáis tocando en muchos festivales de Europa, supongo que estaréis satisfechos de cómo están sucediendo las cosas?
Tuvimos el honor de tocar los festivales más grandes de Europa en los últimos tres años y tuvimos un par de grandes giras con grandes bandas. Así que sí, en realidad no podemos pedir más y estamos entusiasmados con lo que vendrá en el futuro!
“Finisterre” lo abre “Aufbruch”, …creo que es una canción que refleja todos los estados musicales por los que se pasea DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT en este álbum. No sé si estás de acuerdo conmigo.
Sí, definitivamente estaría de acuerdo contigo y esa es también la razón por la cual esta canción es la apertura del álbum. Combina todo, cada elemento, estilo y espectro que puedes encontrar en el álbum en una sola canción. Se abre con una mística frase hablada y melodía frágil de la guitarra que rompe en un riffing agresivo y poderoso antes de atenuarse a mitad de la canción, proporcionando el hueco ideal para una parte muy lenta, doom y con voces limpias. Para mí personalmente esta canción es la más importante en el álbum ya que realmente no sabía cómo resultarían las voces en limpio al final. Pero ahora estoy muy satisfecho, también gracias a Jan Kerscher (propietario de Ghost City Recordings) con quien grabé la voz, que es un ingeniero muy experimentado y sabe cómo empujarme a mis límites. "Aufbruch" es la canción perfecta para conocer el álbum y representa nuestro estado musical actual lo mejor que yo diría.

Este es vuestro cuarto trabajo. Aunque vuestro espectro de influencias es algo amplio, creéis que con “Finisterre” os habéis consolidado en vuestro propio sonido?
Debido al hecho de que realmente hemos hecho toda la producción por nosotros mismos, incluyendo las demos, las grabaciones reales y la mezcla de este álbum es el que representa el mejor sonido de la banda. Siempre habrá nuevas influencias que mantendrán nuestro sonido evolucionando, pero tampoco queremos cambiar nuestro sonido completamente en cada álbum. Más bien "llegar allí" lentamente y siempre mantenerse fieles a nuestras raíces y marcas.

Vuestra base es un Black con influencias muy de la vieja escuela, muy crudo, rápido y agresivo, pero también dais cabida a sonidos progresivos, como por ejemplo en “Skepsis Part I y II”. Antes comentaba que vuestras influencias son muy variadas, puedes hablarme de ellas…
He escuchado mucha música clásica durante el proceso de escritura de "Finisterre" y todavía lo hago. También nuestro baterista Tobias está estudiando música clásica y jazz en la universidad en este momento, lo que amplía nuestro horizonte musical, pero también alza nuestra aspiración hacia nuestra propia música. Así que para mantenerlo interesante siempre tratamos de incluir diferentes influencias de metal, rock, música clásica, electrónica, incluso la música pop (que puede ser más complejo de lo que piensas!). Limitar las influencias a sólo un cierto estilo de música o género limita automáticamente sus posibilidades de escribir música. Así que tratamos de ser abiertos y de inspirarnos en lo que cruza nuestros caminos.

Porque ”Finisterre” para el título del álbum?
"Finisterre" se puede traducir aproximadamente al "fin del mundo". Mientras que "Stellar" estaba más bien basado en un concepto espiritual y "lejos de la tierra", "Finisterre" lo está trayendo de vuelta a la tierra y se enfrenta con lo que encuentras justo cuando sales de tu puerta. Es como un espejo que nos muestra toda esta desagradable negatividad en la sociedad de hoy que nos molesta y queremos deshacernos de él lo más rápido posible.

Que es “Finisterre” y a rasgos generales, que supone para DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT?
"Finisterre" pasó a convertirse en un álbum bastante negativo en lo que respecta a los últimos acontecimientos y desarrollos que se ven en el mundo. "Finisterre" es como nuestro adiós al mundo cómo lo conocemos, cortando una línea, mejorando y recomenzando. En realidad no tiene mucho que ver con el "verdadero" Finisterre que encuentras en España o Francia, sino más bien ser visto desde un punto de vista metafórico. Además realmente me gusta el sonido y la forma de la palabra y resume la atmósfera general y el estado de ánimo del álbum bastante bien.

Y la portada, que intentáis reflejar con ella?
Aquellos que conocen la caratula del predecesor "Stellar" podrían notar que hay un color adicional añadido a las ilustraciones en blanco y negro. En "Stellar" fue un color azul oscuro que representa su ambiente más espiritual y "espacio" - en "Finisterre", sin embargo, es el color rojo para representar el tono más agresivo del álbum. Actúa como una señal de advertencia que es omnipresente en toda la obra de arte de este álbum. Queríamos crear un ambiente místico y oscuro que encaje con los temas líricos basados en el "Steppenwolf" (de Hermann Hesse) que ha sido una de las principales aspiraciones de las letras. Puedes encontrar muchas conexiones entre el libro y la caratula si lo miras desde un punto de vista mas cercano.

En cuanto a la grabación, tú (Nikita) encargado de grabar las voces, guitarras y bajo, además de grabar y mezclar el álbum. Cual ha sido el motivo de grabar todas las guitarras y bajo?
Cuando compongo música para DWEF siempre escribo la canción en su totalidad al igual que todas las guitarras, bajo y también partes importantes de la batería. Después de terminar una canción, la envío a los demás y me dan sus opiniones para que podamos mejorar las composiciones aquí y allá. Sin embargo, cuando entramos en el estudio, sólo Tobias (batería) y yo nos encargamos de las grabaciones. Pienso que es justo para mí para grabar todas las guitarras y el bajo solo porque tengo una visión muy distinta de cómo se supone que mi música suena y se realiza. También me encanta tocar todos los instrumentos en el estudio y ver cómo evolucionan las canciones, agregar otra guitarra aquí y allá y probar cosas diferentes. Para los directos tengo a mis amigos tocando el bajo y la segunda guitarra y están totalmente de acuerdo con este procedimiento, ya que ellos tienen sus propios proyectos en otras bandas donde se puede ejercer su creatividad.

Este es el segundo disco de DWEF en el que cantas. Te sientes ya a gusto en esta faceta?
Desde que grabé "Stellar" supe que el canto es mi nuevo "instrumento" principal y me gusta mucho cantar en directo y en el estudio. Si escucho "Stellar" ahora siento que el rendimiento de las voces fue un poco pasado de la raya, le di demasiada fuerza y no había prácticamente ninguna dinámica y variación en ella. En "Finisterre" traté de tener más control sobre mi voz, cantar un poco más relajado, pero aún fuerte y poderoso. Traté de aumentar la dinámica y variar el estilo de cantar a voces de tono más alto que a gritos de rango medio (realmente no sé cómo nombrar esto, cierto, jaja). Nunca he dado lecciones de canto, pero después de más de cinco giras y alrededor de 50 espectáculos he llegado a conocer mi voz y ahora sé qué puedo hacer y qué no. En realidad este proceso nunca termina y todavía estoy aprendiendo mucho a cómo controlar mi voz y cada concierto, cada grabación, es un nuevo desafío. Pero como dije, lo disfruto mucho y empiezo a sentirme cada vez más cómodo. Pero definitivamente no es el final del camino!

El disco sale a finales de mes de Septiembre con el sello Season Of Mist, cuales serán los siguientes pasos de la banda, cuales son vuestros planes inmediatos?
Hemos programado una gira europea completa para septiembre / octubre y también estamos trabajando en más espectáculos y festivales para el 2018. Vamos a Barcelona el 30 de septiembre y Madrid el 1 de octubre, ¡y realmente no podemos esperar para estos espectáculos! Las últimas veces que hemos estado en estos lugares eran simplemente increíbles y nos lo pasamos de maravilla, como siempre en España!

Estaréis en nuestro país de gira junto a Inter Arma y Regarde Les Hommes Tomber el sábado 30 de Septiembre en Barcelona y el domingo 1 de Octubre en Madrid, dentro de vuestra gira europea. Que tenéis preparado para esta gira?
Por supuesto, vamos a tocar un montón de cosas nuevas para nuestros fans españoles, pero también incluyen clásicos de los primeros lanzamientos en nuestro setlist. Vamos a tener alrededor de 70 minutos de tiempo en cada concierto y tendrá un espectáculo de luces especial creado para apoyar los ambientes en los conciertos. Ademas podréis conseguir nuestro nuevo álbum como CD limitado digibox y vinilo y también ¡una camiseta de gira exclusivo, un póster y mucho más! ¡Esta será nuestra mayor gira hasta ahora así que asegúrate de pasar por aquí!

It has been 2 years since "Stellar" to this fourth work "Finisterre", How have been for you these last months?
The release of Stellar was quite a big deal for us since it was the first release on a big international label and allowed us to reach a broader, more international audience. It was definitely like a level up for us and a big step in our carreer. With its release we had our first extensive European tour with fellow countrymen Downfall of Gaia. It was 25 shows in a row without a day off, so quite an exhausting but very successful run. After that we had some major festival appearances on Hellfest, Graspop and also Resurrection Fest in Spain. We absolutely loved it there and even stayed for two days enjoying the sea and food (good times!). In March/April 2016 we finally played our very first own headlining tour through Europe followed by even more festivals like the infamous Wacken Open Air in Germany and another tour through Spain and France with Portugal's Moonspell in December 2016. After this tour we entered the studio to record Finisterre which took us round about two months to finish. So this time between Stellar and Finisterre was quite busy and turbulent also because our bassist Giuliano left the band just before the Wacken show which was quite a downer for the whole band. But right now we're stronger than ever, ready to put out Finisterre and go back on the road in September/October!

You are playing at many festivals in Europe, I suppose you are satisfied with how things are happening, right?
We had the honour to play the biggest festivals in Europe in the past three years and had a couple of great tours with great bands. So yes, actually we can't ask for more and we're excited about what to come in the future!

Finisterre "opens with " Aufbruch ", ... I think it is a song that reflects all the musical states through which DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT walks on this album. I do not know if you agree with me.
Yes, I would definitely agree with you and that's also the reason why this song is the opener of the album. It combines everything, each element, style and spectrum you can find on the album in one song. It opens with a mystical spoken word and fragile guitar melody just to break into a very agressive and powerful blasting riffing before slowing down in the middle of the song, providing room for a very slow, doomy part with clean vocals. For me personally this song is the most important on the album since I really didn't know how the clean vocals turned out in the end. But now I'm really satisfied, also thanks to Jan Kerscher (owner of Ghost City Recordings) who I recorded the vocals with, who's a very experienced engineer and knows how to push me to my limits. “Aufbruch” is just the perfect song to get to know the album and represents our current musical state the best I would say.

This is your fourth job. Although your spectrum of influences is broad, do you believe that with "Finisterre" you have consolidated in your own sound?
Due to the fact we've actually done the whole production by ourselves including the demos, actual recordings and the mix this album is the one that represents our band sound the very best. There will always be new influences that keep our sound evolving but we also don't want to change our sound completely on every album. Rather “getting there” slowly but steadily and always staying true to our roots and trademarks.

Your base is a Black with very old-school influences, very crude, fast and aggressive, but it also accommodates progressive sounds, as for example in "Skepsis Part I and II". Before I commented that your influences are very varied, can you tell me about them?
I listened to a lot of classical music during the writing process of Finisterre and still do. Also our drummer Tobias is studying classical and jazz music at university at the moment which broadens our musical horizon but also raises our aspiration to our own music. So to keep it interesting we always try to include different influences from metal, rock, classical music, electronic, even pop music (which can be more complex than you think!). Limiting your influences to only a certain style of music or genre automatically limits your possibilites in writing music. So we try to be open and draw inspiration from whatever crosses our paths.

Why "Finisterre" for thisalbum’s title?
“Finisterre” can be roughly translated to “the end of the world”. While Stellar was rather based on a spiritual and “away from earth” concept, Finisterre is bringing you back down to earth and confronts you with what you find right when you step out of your door. It's like a mirror showing us all this nasty negativity in today's society that pisses us off and we want to get rid of it as fast as possible.

What is "Finisterre" andin general features, what is meant for your band DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT?
Finisterre happened to become quite a negative album in regards of the latest events and developments you see in world. “Finisterre” is like our farewell to the world how we know it, cutting a line, improve and start over. It actually has not much to do with the “real” (Cap) Finisterre you find in Spain or France, it is rather to be seen from a metaphorical point of view. Besides I really like the sound and shape of the word and it sums up the overall atmosphere and mood of the album pretty well.

And the cover art, whatdo you try to reflect with it?
Those who know the artwork of the predecessor “Stellar” might have notice that there is an additional colour added to the black and white illustrations. On “Stellar” it was a dark blue colour representing its more spiritual and “space” atmosphere – on “Finisterre”, however, it's the red colour to represent the more aggressive tone of the album. It acts like a warning signal that is omnipresent in the whole artwork of this album. We wanted to create a mystical and obscure atmosphere that fits the lyrical themes based around the “Steppenwolf” (by Hermann Hesse) that has been one of the main ispiration for the lyrics. You can find many connections between the book and the artwork if you take a closer look.

As for the recording, Nikita has been in charge of recording the voices, guitars and bass, besides recording and mixing the album. What was the reason for recording all the guitars and bass?
When I write music for DWEF I always write the song in full so all the guitars, bass and also major parts of the drums. After a song is finished I send it to the others and they give me feedback so we can improve the compositions here and there. However, when we enter the studio it's only Tobias (drums) and me who take care of the recordings. It just feels right for me to record all guitars and bass alone because I have a very distinct vision of how my music is supposed to sound and be performed. I also love to play all the instruments in the studio and see how the songs evolve, add another guitar here and there and try out different things. For live I have my friends playing bass and the second guitar and they're totally fine with this procedure. Since they all have their own projects and bands running where they can live out their creativity.

This is the second DWEF album you sing. Do you feel comfortable at this point?
Since recording Stellar I knew that singing is quite my new main “instrument” and I really enjoy performing it live and in the studio. If I listen to Stellar now I feel that performance-wise the vocals were a bit over the tops, I gave it too much power and there was pretty much no dynamics and variation in it. On Finisterre I tried to get more control over my voice, sing a little bit more laid-back but still strong and powerfull. I tried to increase the dynamics and vary the style of singing to higher pitched vocals to rather mid-range screams (I really don't really know how to name this right, haha). I've never had lessons in singing but after more than five tours and round about 50 shows I got to know my voice and now know what I can do and what not. Actually this process never ends and I'm still learning a lot how to control my voice and every show, every recoring is a new challenge. But as I said I really enjoy it and start to feel more and more comfortable. But it's definitely not the end of the road!

The album comes out at the end of the month with Season Of Mist, label,what are the band’s next steps , what are your immediate plans?
We have scheduled a full European tour for September/October and also working on more shows and festivals fo 2018. We're coming to Barcelona on September 30th and Madrid on October 1st and we really can't wait for these shows! The last times we've been to these places were just awesome and we had a great time – like always in Spain!

You will be in our country on tour with Inter Arma and Regarde Les Hommes Tomber on Saturday, September 30th in Barcelona and on Sunday, October 1st in Madrid, within your European tour. What do you have prepared for this tour?
We will of course play a lot of new stuff for our Spanish fans but also include classics from the first releases in our setlist. We will have around 70 minutes of playtime on each show and will have a special light show set up to support the atmospheres at the concerts. You can of course get our new album as limited CD digibox and vinyl, but also an exclusive tourshirt, poster and much more awaits! This will be our biggest tour so far so be sure to stop by!
