Entrevista: David Christmann, guitarrista de THERE'S A LIGHT. "Encontramos algunas respuestas dentro de la obra de Immanuel Kant"

Hoy, 10 de diciembre, se pone a la venta el segundo álbum de los alemanes THERE'S A LIGHT " f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope?"  y hemos querido hablar con su guitarrista David Christmann para que nos presente la banda y nos explique en que consiste esta propuesta de post rockl.

TNT: En primer lugar, gracias por atender a TNT Radio Rock y felicitarte por vuestra propuesta, por este segundo trabajo " f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope?" , bueno y también por vuestro anterior “A Long Lost Silence”.  

Sois un grupo relativamente joven, apenas lleváis 10 años, ¿cómo surgió la idea de montar esta banda? ¿Puedes explicar a los lectores españoles cómo se formó la banda y cuál es tu estilo?

David: En realidad, THERE'S A LIGHT comenzó como un proyecto de estudio después de que mi mejor amigo muriera en un accidente automovilístico, comencé a hacer mucha música con nuestro teclista Jonas Obermüller.
Tuvimos la oportunidad de ir a un estudio donde Jonas estudió diseño musical y le pregunté a Andreas Richau (Voz / Bajo) si quería venir con nosotros para eventualmente grabar algunas voces. Entonces escribimos el EP "Khartoum" en tan solo un fin de semana. Más tarde Markus y Jan se unieron porque les gustó el proyecto y nos convertimos en una banda.

TNT:  Realmente, vuestra música entra a la primera escucha y se agradece que bandas como vosotros pongáis algo de tranquilidad y calma al panorama actual, lleno de música extrema. ¿Cómo es la respuesta de la gente a vuestra propuesta? ¿Hay público para este tipo de música?

David: Recibimos una respuesta conmovedora bastante impresionante de todo el mundo, la gente puede identificarse mucho con nuestras canciones emocionales. Hay una gran base de fans alrededor del Post Rock, por ejemplo, echa un vistazo a WherePostRockDwells en Facebook o YouTube.

TNT: El nombre como la banda es algo extraño. ¿Qué queréis decir con el término THERE'S A LIGHT (HAY UNA LUZ)?

David:   Como acabo de mencionar, mi mejor amigo murió en un accidente automovilístico, en ese momento me sentí realmente desesperado y puse toda mi emoción en la música como una especie de salida. La música realmente me ayudó a superar ese momento difícil y más tarde pensé que "Hay una luz" encajaría perfectamente, porque realmente me ayudó mucho.

TNT:   Sois una banda preferentemente instrumental. En vuestro álbum de debut había dos canciones con letra: “White Marble” y “Across the river…”; Ahora, en este segundo ya incluís 3 canciones más: “Like the Earth Orbits Sun”, “Elpis”, “Be Brave, Fragile Heart”. ¿Habéis pensado en hacer un disco con solo canciones con letra?

David:  No, en realidad no, no creo que la música siempre deba tener voces porque todos pueden entenderla universalmente, ya sea que haya voces o no.

TNT:  Vuestras composiciones, tanto las instrumentales como las que contienen letra, son breves paseos poéticos. ¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales? ¿Y literarias?

David:  Nuestras influencias musicales varían mucho. Escuchaba mucho post rock cuando comencé el proyecto, pero siempre aprecié otra música también, como Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm o incluso cosas como Moderat.
Todos tenemos influencias muy diferentes y creo que eso es lo que lo hace tan especial, combinar todos estos tipos y fusionarlos en uno. En cuanto a lo literario, hablamos mucho sobre nuestras experiencias y encontramos algunas respuestas dentro de la obra de Immanuel Kant.

TNT:  Para comprender mejor vuestras composiciones, ¿podría explicar brevemente el significado de las canciones? La filosofía detrás de ellas.

David:   Cada canción tiene un significado diferente para cada uno de nosotros, tratamos de combinar un sentimiento en cada canción. Creo que depende del oyente lo que asociará con cada canción pero solo para complacerte de alguna manera, nuestra canción "Be Brave, Fragile Heart" trata sobre explorar tu fragilidad interior y cómo llevarse bien con ella. Todos experimentamos situaciones malas y es humano ser débil en algunos momentos de la vida, entonces necesitas sanar y, lo más importante, entender que sanar lleva tiempo.

TNT:  Es "it f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope?", un álbum conceptual?

David: En cierto modo sí, pensamos mucho en lo que significa la esperanza para nosotros de una manera buena y negativa. A partir de entonces pasó a convertirse en un álbum conceptual.

TNT: ¿Podrías explicar también el significado de la portada con ese faro y el título del álbum: f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope?

David:  El faro es una metáfora de la esperanza, una guía cuando estás en alta mar y necesitas una luz que te oriente. Entonces, nos preguntamos qué significa la esperanza y qué significa para nosotros. Tuvimos muchas conversaciones dentro de la banda sobre los aspectos buenos pero también los malos de la esperanza y nuestras experiencias con ella. Y obtuvimos respuestas e inspiración de la historia y la filosofía. Como Kant que tiene puntos de vista extremadamente positivos sobre este tema: la esperanza es una necesidad para la existencia humana, no la ve como algo personal sino colectivo. De aquí es de donde vino el título del álbum.

TNT:  ¿"Alcanzásteis la Luna" al firmar con Napalm Records? ¿Qué significa estar con ellos?

David:  Creo que "Alcanzamos la luna" incluso antes de eso, ¡jaja! Nunca pensamos que nuestra música tendría tanto impacto en la gente, obtener respuestas emocionales de los fans, y que nuestra música les diga algo, realmente significa mucho para nosotros.

 TNT:  Y finalmente, ¿cuáles son sus proyectos de futuro? ¿Podremos veros algún día en España?

David: Haremos lo que siempre hacemos, divertirnos creando música como amigos y, con suerte, escribir otro disco y conectarnos con fans de todo el mundo. ¡Esperemos que algún día toquemos en España! Nos encantaría hacer eso. Supongo que en el futuro.

TNT: First of all, thank you for attending TNT Radio Rock and congratulate you for your proposal, for this second work f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope, well and also for your previous
“A Long Lost Silence”. You are a relatively young band, barely 10 years old, how did the idea of setting up this band come about? Can you explain to Spanish readers how the band was formed and what is your style?

David:  Actually There's A Light started out as a Studio-Project after my best friend died in a car accident, i started doing alot of music with our Keyboard-Player Jonas Obermüller. We got the chance to hit a studio where Jonas studied music design and i asked Andreas Richau (Vocals/Bass) if he wants to come with us to eventually record some vocals. We wrote the EP "Khartoum" in just one weekend then.later on Markus and Jan joined in because they liked the project and we became a Band.

TNT: Really, your music enters the first listen and it is appreciated that bands like you put some tranquility and calm to the current scene, full of extreme music. How is the response of the people to your proposal? Is there an audience for this kind of music?

David:  We get quite an awesome heartwarming response from all over the world, people can relate alot to our emotional Songs. There is a big Fanbase around Post Rock, for example check out WherePostRockDwells on Facebook or YouTube

TNT: Your name as a band is something strange. What do you mean by the name THERE’S A LIGHT?

David: As i just mentioned my best friend died in a car accident, around that time i felt really hopeless and put all my emotion into music as some kind of outlet. Music really helped me through this rough time and later on i thought "There's A Light" would be a perfect fit, because it really helped me alot.

TNT: You are a preferably instrumental band. On your debut album there were two songs with lyrics: “White Marble” and “Across the river…”; Now, in this second you already include 3 more songs: “Like the Earth Orbits Sun”, “Elpis”, “Be Brave, Fragile Heart”. Have you thought about making an album with only songs with lyrics?

David: No actually not, i dont think music always need to have vocals in it because everyone can understand it universally whether there are vocals or not.

TNT: Your compositions, both the instrumental ones and those that contain lyrics, are short poetic walks. What are your musical influences? And literary?

David: Our musical influences vary alot. i did listen to alot of post rock when i started the project, but i always appreciated other music aswell for example Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, or even things like Moderat.
We all have very different influences and i think that is what makes it so special, to combine all these types and merge it into one.
As for literary, we talked alot about our experiences and found some answers within the works of Immanuel Kant.

TNT: To better understand your compositions, could you briefly explain the meaning of them? The philosophy behind them.

David:  Each song has a different meaning for everyone of us, we tried to combine a feeling into each song.
I think its up to the listener what he will associate with each song. But just to please you in some way, our song "Be Brave, Fragile Heart" is about exploring your inner fragility and how to get along with it. We all experience bad situations and its just human to be weak at some points in life, then you need to heal, and most importantly understand that healing takes time.

 TNT:Is it f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope, a conceptual album?

David:  kind of yes, we thought alot about what hope means to us in a good and in a negative way.
from then on it just happened to become a conceptual album.

TNT: Could you also explain the meaning of the cover with that lighthouse and the title of the album: f̶o̶r̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶I ̶h̶o̶pe̶? for what must we hope?

David:  The lighthouse is a metaphor of hope, a guide when you are far out on the high seas and need to have a light to guide you. So, we asked ourselves what hope stands for and what it means to us. We had a lot of conversations within the band about the good but also the bad aspects of hope and our experiences with it. And we got answers and inspiration by history and philosophy. Like Kant who has extremely positive views on this topic – hope is necessity for human existence, it’s not seen by him as a personal but collective thing. This is where the album title came from.

TNT: Did you “Reach the Moon” by signing for Napalm Records? What does it mean to be with them?

I think we "reached the moon" even before that haha!. We never thought our music would have such an impact on people, getting emotional responses of fans, that our music did something to them, really means the world to us.

TNT: And finally, what are your projects for the future? Will we be able to see you in Spain one day?

Lets hope we play in Spain one day for sure! We would totally love to do that. i guess for the future : we do what we always do, having fun creating music as friends and hopefully write another record and connect with fans all over the world.
