Entrevista con THIRTEEN STARS

Ya estamos a días de tener en España una gira muy especial. Desde Cumbria (UK) vienen por primera vez una de las bandas que representa el rock sureño más puro de la otra parte del charco. Thirteen Stars estarán en cinco noche de disfrute por España en las ciudades de Barcelona, Madrid, Vitoria, Bilbao y Cangas do Morrazo. La banda vendrá con su nuevo EP “Cheek By Jowl” publicado en enero y con homenaje a The Black Crowes. Gracias a Lestrato, los ingleses harán cinco noches de fiesta y puro rock.

Desde TNT Radio Rock hemos tenido la ocasión de poder entrevistar a Hoss Thompson.

Primero de todo, muchas gracias por tener un hueco de vuestro tiempo para responder a TNT para esta primera visita a España. Empezamos con el origen de la banda. ¿Cómo surgió Thirteen Stars?

Escribí, toqué y grabé los primeros dos álbumes y luego quise tocarlos en directo y así que formé la banda para hacer todo ésto.

Cada vez que hago entrevistas para grupos como vosotros, siempre que pregunto sobre cuando empezó la pasión por el rock, siempre los padres tienen la culpa de todo. ¿Cómo llegaron todas las influencias que tenéis en vuestro sonido?

A lo largo de diferentes tiempos y circunstancias, hay naturalmente canciones, bandas e influencias que juegan un papel en el desarrollo y la producción musical. Ya sea que te presente una por un amigo, o que esté viendo un documental sobre un álbum o incluso que escuche una canción en la radio. En cierto modo, la música es como las estaciones, el paisaje cambia, pero siempre deja un recuerdo y tiene la capacidad de recordarnos tiempos, lugares y personas muy específicas.

Cuando piensas en rock sureño siempre nos transportamos a América, muy distinto al ambiente y clima que hay en Reino Unido. ¿Cómo fueron los inicios de una banda así en un país como Inglaterra?

Los estados del sur de América y el norte de Inglaterra hasta Escocia, etc. son más similares de lo que parecen. Existe una ética de trabajo predominantemente manual, un sentido del humor negro y economías predominantemente rurales. Añade a eso un patrimonio compartido de música folclórica irlandesa, escocesa e inglesa y no es sorprendente que cuatro tipos en Inglaterra tuvieran la música rock del sur de Estados Unidos que resonando en ellos con tanta fuerza.

Hace unas semanas salió vuestro EP “Cheek By Jowl”. Cuatro canciones que sonarán en estas fechas en España. Vuestro último disco de estudio fue “The White Raven” a finales de 2015 pero sí que han salido varios EP. ¿Cuál es el motivo de sacar este nuevo EP? ¿En qué estado está el próximo álbum?

El motivo por el cual se lanzó el EP fue para darles a nuestros fans una muestra del álbum que está por venir, pero también para tratar de capturar el sonido, la energía y la inmediatez de nuestros conciertos en directo. El álbum está en progreso, tenemos mucho trabajo por hacer, pero esperamos que lo lancemos este año.

En el EP “Cheek By Jowl” tenéis la versión de “Remedy” de The Black Crowes. ¿Qué importancia tiene The Black Crowes para vosotros para llegar al punto de grabar una versión en vuestra discografía?

Bueno, nos encantan los Black Crowes, algunos de sus álbumes son los favoritos de la banda y sentimos que con nuestro doble efecto de guitarra podríamos hacer justicia a la canción y darle nuestra propia inclinación.

Llegáis a España en el tour “Outlaws or Angels”. ¿Sois más Outlaws o ángeles?

¡Esto depende de cómo estemos de quebrados!

En octubre estuvisteis con The Quireboys en algunos conciertos del tour por Europa. Supongo que tuvieron que ser unas noches muy buenas con un ambiente increíble. ¿Cómo fue compartir fechas con ellos y cómo llegasteis a formar parte de su tour?

Octubre fue la segunda vez en la que hemos estado de gira por Europa con The Quireboys y es una diversión fantástica. Tratamos a esos chicos con gran respeto y profundo afecto. Son unos tipos maravillosos, genuinos y fantásticamente talentosos.

Para las personas que nos gusta el rock más puro, el rock setentero y que necesita del calor de la audiencia para darle un punto extra, echamos de menos festivales de rock sureño. Parece que sólo existe el metal y el heavy. ¿Qué opinión tenéis de que este tipo de rock no tenga un espacio más mediático?

En el Reino Unido tenemos el festival Rambling Man y Hard Rock Hell Crows, que son festivales de rock sureño en general. Con el surgimiento de los gustos de Blackberry Smoke, The Cadillac 3 y Whisky Myers, creo que el rock sureño se está recuperando de una manera muy real y positiva.

Uno de los referentes más grandes del rock murió hace relativamente poco. ¿Cómo influyó Tom Petty en Thirteen Stars?

Estuvimos completamente devastados. Tom Petty es y ha sido una gran influencia para nosotros, sabio en cuanto a los sonidos, compositor y hasta su actitud hacia la música. En nuestra furgoneta siempre tenemos los primeros tres álbumes Heartbreakers y los escuchamos todo el tiempo. Una nueva canción llamada "Running So Long" fue inspirada directamente por la composiciones de Tom Petty y fue escrita poco después de su muerte.

Primera visita a España con Thirteen Stars, ¿cuál es la idea sobre el público español y qué expectativas tenéis en estos conciertos aquí?

He amado a España y la cultura española durante mucho tiempo. Recuerdo que la primera comida que comí en España hace años fue Gambas al Pil Pil y todavía adoro ese plato. En términos de multitudes, solo espero que todos pasen un buen rato con nosotros.

Y por último, para la gente de España y de otros países que vean la entrevista, ¿cómo se define Thirteen Stars y cómo sois en directo para los que aún no os han visto? Muchas gracias por tu tiempo. ¡Nos vemos en la gira!

Nos encanta tocar en directo y viajar por el mundo experimentando diferentes culturas y viendo diferentes lugares. Nuestro lema es "tocar en todas partes para todos". First of all, thank you very much for having a gap of your time to respond to TNT for this first visit to Spain. We start with the origin of the band. How did Thirteen Stars start?

I wrote, played and recorded the first two albums and then wanted to play them live and so formed the band to do that.

Every time I do interviews for bands like you, whenever I ask about when the passion for rock started, parents are always to blame for everything. How did all the influences that you have in your sound as a band come to your life?

Throughout different times and circumstances there are naturally songs, bands and influences that play a role in ones musical development and output. Whether it's being introduced to a band by a friend, or watching a documentary on an album or even hearing a song on the radio. In some ways music is like the seasons, it's landscape changes but it always leaves a memory and has an ability to remind us of very specific times, places and people.

When you think about southern rock we always travel to America, very different from the atmosphere and climate in the United Kingdom. How were the beginnings of a band like that in a country like England?

The southern states of America and the north of England up into Scotland etc are more similar than they might appear. There's a shared predominantly manual labour work ethic, a sense of dark humour and predominantly rural economies. Add to that a shared heritage of Irish, Scottish and English folk music and it's not that surprising that four guys in England would have southern American rock music resonate with them so strongly.

A few weeks ago your live EP "Cheek By Jowl" released. Four songs that will sound on these dates in Spain. Your last studio album was "The White Raven" at the end of 2015 but there have been several EPs. What is the reason for releasing this new EP? In what status is the next album?

The reason for releasing the EP was to give our fans a taster of the album to come, but also to try and capture the sound, energy and immediacy of our live shows. The album is very much in progress, we have a lot more work to do but we're hoping that we will release it this calendar year.

In the EP "Cheek By Jowl" you have "Remedy", cover of The Black Crowes. How important is The Black Crowes for you to get to the point of recording a cover in your discography?

Well we love the Black Crowes, some of their albums are firm band favourites and we felt that with our dual guitar attack we could do the song justice and give it our own slant.

You arrive in Spain on the "Outlaws or Angels" tour. Are you more outlaws or angels?

That depends on how broke we are!

In October you were with The Quireboys in some concerts of the tour around Europe. I suppose it had to be a very good night with an incredible atmosphere. How was sharing dates with them and how did you become part of their tour?

October was the second time we've toured Europe with the Quireboys and it's fantastic fun. We hold those boys in very great respect and very deep affection. They are wonderful, genuine and fantastically talented chaps.

For the people that we like the purest rock, seventies rock and that needs the heat of the audience to give it an extra point, we miss southern rock festivals. It seems that only metal and heavy metal exist. What opinion do you have that this type of rock does not have a more media space?

In the UK we have Rambling man festival and Hard rock Hell Crows which are both southern rock festivals by and large. With the rise of the likes of Blackberry Smoke, the Cadillac 3 and whiskey Myers I think that southern rock is bouncing back in a very real and positive way.

One of the biggest references of rock died relatively recently. How did Tom Petty influence Thirteen Stars?

We were utterly devastated. Tom Petty is and has been a huge influence on us, sound wise, songwriting wise and even his attitude to music. In our Van we always have the first three heartbreakers albums and play them all the time. A new song called "Running So Long" was directly inspired by Tom Pettys songwriting and was written not long after his passing.

First visit to Spain with Thirteen Stars, what is the idea about the Spanish public and what expectations do you have in these concerts here?

I've loved Spain and Spanish culture for a long time, I remember the first meal I ever ate in Spain years ago was Gambas Pil Pil and I still adore that dish. In terms of crowds I just hope that everyone's up for having a good time with us.

And finally, for the people of Spain and other countries who see the interview, how do you define Thirteen Stars and how is your show for those who have not yet seen you? Thank you very much for your time. See you on your tour!
