17 ABRIL. KAFÉ ANTZOKIA (BILBAO)
18 ABRIL. ROCK & BLUES (ZARAGOZA)
19 ABRIL. 16 TONELADAS (VALENCIA)
20 ABRIL. SALA CLAMORES (MADRID)
21 ABRIL. FACTORÍA CULTURAL (AVILÉS)
22 ABRIL. SALASON (CANGAS DO MORRAZO)

Me recuerda a ZZ Top mezclado con The Black Keys. ¿Cómo surge “Caesar”?

¡Amamos mucho a César!

Llegamos a “Greasy Chops”. Me parece increíble.

ENGLISH BELOW…

First of all, thank you very much for your time and for returning to Spain with a wide tour. This time you go back to your latest album "Rapture". The album keeps all your influences from rock, funk and of course, soul. How would you describe "Rapture" from within the band?

We’ve tried to create everything completely from the heart, setting a vibe that is intented to make the listener go into a state of exctasy or better said ‘Rapture’. Our love for rythm & blues and soul is the foundation for this album. Making people forget their daily life for a moment and bring them into a trance-like state is basically what our job as musicians is about. With Rapture’ we really tried to stick to this jobs.

The album in general seemed very good at the time, and listening to it again, I think it improves with time. How was the process of recording the album and what were the first feelings when finishing it?

It was a long process! We’ve been writing new material for about two years. During this process we sort of came to two different albums and instead of trying to combine everything we selected the songs that we felt create a unity and a sound that fits this band and it’s heritage where the Hammond organ and lead vocal switch in their leading roles.

When you start listening to the album, the first thing you think when you're with "Caesar" is: "Sven Hammond have come back in style". Pure aggressive rock to start the journey of "Rapture". It reminds me of ZZ Top mixed with The Black Keys. How does "Caesar" arise?

We love Caesar so much! It has sprouted directly from our love off improvisation and rythm and blues and it’s so much fun playing it. It sets the tone and brings the audiences attention right forward. We just started jamming in the studio on a guitar riff Tim (Eijmaal) was playing… this is how the writing of many of our songs starts off actually: Tim is often responsable for planting the bluesy, riff seeds..

We went from the song with more fury of the album to get to "Lazarus" and "Rapture". Sound characteristic of Sven Hammond with great work of drums and Hammond. Why "Rapture" is the song that defines the album?

Rapture is just one of those songs with an epic nature.. it has a lush sound; like a warm bath.. you can close your eyes to it and drift away.. get into a state of ‘rapture’. That’s why we felt Rapture is the song that defines the album.

One curious thing when I first heard "Rapture" was that I had to listen to the album "Nine Lives" by Steve Winwood again. Maybe it was not the exact inspiration but your song transported me to Steve Winwood. What are the influences of the band besides the obvious Marvin Gaye, and what new sounds are you trying to find?

Ah that’s great! It’s funny how people always make connections… We are five musicians with many different tastes and likes. The biggest challenge is always to create something together that is a reflection of what we love and is also one coherent whole. I really tried to make a selection of songs from our writing sessions that work like a whole whilst still being a reflection of our wide range of musical influences. For this album we’ve been influenced by Johnny Lee Hooker to Prince and from Jimmy McGriff to some very interesting new bands such as Tame Impala and experimental jazz band Hiatus Kaiyote.

We arrived at "Greasy Chops". Half the album we have distinguished several musical genres and now, in this case, this soul mix with jazz hypnotizes. I find it incredible. Do not you mind getting out of the conventional and doing such a varied work between song and song?

These kind of pieces are the reason I started playing the Hammond organ. It’s the basic foundation on which this band is build. There always needs to be a connection to this on our albums. Yes, it may sound like a sidestep, but if you listen to all of our records and dive in the history of this band, its actually the red thread thru our work. I know it’s not very commercial or easy for marketing maybe to be so eclectic, but it’s who we are, it’s who I am.

Although you have a very good rhythm with studio albums and live, I guess you do not stop composing. How do you see this second half of 2018 and the near future of Sven Hammond?

Ha! Of course not: creating new music is one of the most beautiful things there is! Most of this summer we will be playing festivals in The Netherlands, Germany, Switserland and Slovenia but if we can find spare time we will be in the studio to write new material. I can’t tell to much about the next album yet, except that it will be one without Ivan. He is currently working on a solo album and will be focussing on that as off the second half of 2018. We have found an incredibly talented new singer to take on the difficult task of being Ivan’s successor and will start working with him on a new release next month already. A single should be released in the fall of this year and we will do a tour in The Netherlands in nov / dec.

In Netherland, many increasingly important bands are coming out. One of the ones I love is Birth Of Joy as well as DeWolff. How do you see the Dutch scene in these last moments? Any new band to consider?

We love the music of both BOJ & DeWlf! Great mates that we often see at festivals. Very good bands too. Actually if I’m honest, at this moment these bands (including us) are almost fleeding The Netherlands: Dutch (spoken) Hip Hop is currently dominating our local music scene! We have to take our 70’s rythm & blues, rock & soul vibes elsewhere… haha… luckily Spain is much warmer and has a better food tradition so not many complaints there 😉

They are already more than a decade of band and many kilometers in the shoes. In these long trips and places where you have played, I suppose it is very important to be methodical, responsible and always have a good mood. How is your day to day on the tours? Is there time to enjoy the night?

Correct! The trick is that you keep calm during the day: read a book, do some work on the laptop whilst you’re in the van. Then after the show it’s always nice to have a little drink together but you’ve gotta make sure that you sleep enough hours. You can’t have several late nights, party’s and still be performing on the highest level which is what we are obliged to do. We take this very seriously so we keep the party for the last night. Having said that: I’m always pretty knackered after a tour with this band and need a day or two to recuperate. 😉

You were in Azkena Rock with bands like ZZ Top, Black Mountain, Mastodon, etc ..., What do you remember from that moment and feel together with so many great music?

Oh man! Azkena Rock was incredible! We felt very proud to be part of the festival (and we hope we can come back one day of course!). It was cool to hang backstage with these legendary bands and share the whole cow that was spread out on a gigantic BBQ! It’s very inspiring to see play at big festivals like that as you can see many other great bands performing.

After the shows that you have already done in Spain you are gaining more fans in the country. What is it like to play in Spain and how is the Spanish public?

Spain is an amazing country to tour and perform. The people are very outgoing and friendly, the food is great and the views on the road are amazing going from green mountains to dry dessert like landscapes, to the rough coast and back to the wide avenues of Madrid.

And finally, for the people of Spain and other countries who see the interview, how do you define Sven Hammond and how is your show for those who have not yet seen you? Thank you very much for your time. See you on your tour.

Sven Hammond is a band for people who truly love rhythm & blues, rock, soul and jazz and have an eclectic taste. The musicians are all adventurous virtuosos with improvisation skills so not one show is the same. If you like big guitar solo’s, gritty Hammond sounds and solo’s, a deep and grrovy bass on tight and funky beats and an incredibly soulful voice on top of it, you’re at the right place!

Thank you en hope to see many of you on this tour!
