Entrevista con Ole y Raimund de NAILED TO OBSCURITY

Una de las giras más importantes en la escena metal tuvo en sus filas a la banda alemana Nailed to Obscurity junto a Soilwork, Amorphis y Jinjer. TNT Radio Rock ha tenido la oportunidad de hablar con Ole y Raimund, guitarra y voz respectivamente. La banda lanzó su nuevo álbum "Black Frost", el 11 de enero a través de Nuclear Blast. El álbum cuenta con 7 canciones a la altura de una continuación de aquel maravilloso "King Delusionb", que absorben al oyente con su atmósfera impresionante, sin sacrificar el sonido extraordinario de la banda.

Primero de todo, gracias por tener tiempo para TNT Radio Rock y además, enhorabuena porque “Black Frost” suena muy bien. Este nuevo álbum creo que es la continuación de “King Delusion” pero sin ser una copia. Es un paso más. ¿Cómo definiríais “Black Frost”?

Raimund: Primero que todo, gracias por los halagos para el álbum. Es genial escuchar que te gusta. Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo. El álbum es un paso lógico después de "King Delusion" y fue muy importante para nosotros no solo copiar el estilo de ese disco. Después de lanzar "King Delusion", todos estábamos muy satisfechos con el resultado. Habría sido un error intentar repetir eso. Hablamos sobre los puntos fuertes con la banda y definimos la melancolía y la atmósfera como los ingredientes más importantes. Con el nuevo material queríamos ir en una dirección aún más oscura y queríamos que el material fuera más atmosférico. Por lo tanto, intentamos utilizar más sonidos ambientales en las partes de la guitarra, etc..., pero también queríamos mantener el sonido general de la banda. El resultado es "Black Frost".

A cada álbum vais creciendo y las canciones son más perfectas y con más ADN a Nailed To Obscurity. ¿Cómo ha sido compuesto “Black Frost”?

Ole: Como siempre, Volker y yo comenzamos a escribir los riffs principales, las melodías y algunas de las estructuras de las canciones. Luego llevamos las ideas básicas a la sala de ensayo, donde trabajamos junto a la banda. La parte en la que nos sentamos juntos como banda es la parte más importante y también la que más tiempo consume, y así es como siempre escribimos canciones. Eso llevó casi un año, ya que solo nos reunimos los fines de semana.

Hablando de las canciones tenemos un contraste entre el death metal y la parte más melódica. En “Tears of the Eyeless” podemos escuchar la parte más melódica. Me recuerda a esos primeros trabajos de Anathema e incluso toda la atmósfera de Opeth también puedo sentirla…

Raimund: Tenemos nuestras influencias y las bandas mencionadas son definitivamente influencias, pero no pensamos en eso mientras escribimos esa canción. Había una cierta fragilidad en la canción instrumental y realmente quería incluir eso en la letra. Siempre tuve esta imagen en mi mente de que ciertas personas me parecen "sin ojos". Actúan como robots o máquinas sin emociones. Esta imagen encaja muy bien con la canción en sí misma y mientras las partes limpias tratan de describir a la protagonista y cómo se ve con los demás, las partes de los growls muestran que es solo una fachada y que hasta lloran. 

“Road to Perdition” es muy dinámica, progresiva y para escuchar más de una vez. Creo que fue mi preferida desde la primera vez que escuché el álbum. No tratáis de hacer todas las cosas muy rápidas o muy técnicas. Creo que es las cosas que están bien hechas no tienen que ser muy difíciles de tocar. Enhorabuena por la canción y por acabar el álbum de esta manera. ¿Cómo surgió “Road to Perdition”?

Ole: Sinceramente, no recuerdo cómo se formó esa canción. Nunca lo sé, solo recuerdo que el riff de apertura fue el primero que escribimos para todo el álbum. Me alegra que te guste tanto. Es una canción divertida para tocar y estamos de acuerdo en que la música no siempre tiene que ser técnica y complicada. Aunque puede ser bastante difícil tocar nuestras canciones en vivo, porque cuando todo es bastante lento y melódico, puedes escuchar los errores con bastante facilidad ?

“Black Frost” salió hace unos días, ¿cómo son las primeras reacciones? ¡Os doy una valoración muy buena!

Raimund: Las reacciones han sido abrumadoramente positivas hasta ahora. Una cosa es cuando escribes y grabas un álbum. Al final, no sabes cómo terminará, aunque si tienes una cierta visión del resultado final. Pero las reacciones hacia él desde afuera son algo completamente diferente. Estamos muy contentos de que el álbum haya sido tan bien recibido. Y es genial escuchar que le das una buena calificación ?

Es vuestro primer trabajo con Nuclear Blast y supongo que es un orgullo estar en un sello discográfico tan importante en el mundo. ¿Cómo fue el cambio de discográfica y qué os aporta trabajar con Nuclear Blast?

Raimund: Nos sentimos muy honrados de estar en la misma lista con bandas como Opeth, Slayer, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost ... lo que sea ? El cambio a un sello más grande fue una transición suave (al principio). Apostasy Records hizo un muy buen trabajo para nosotros y trabajamos con una gran compañía de promoción para "King Delusion". Pero realmente nos dimos cuenta de cuán grande es este paso para nosotros cuando vimos las vistas en nuestro primer video en “Black Frost”. Ese fue el momento en que sentimos el impacto de Nuclear Blast y que dimos un gran paso. A partir de ese día, fue genial obtener una promoción tan fuerte para nuestra música. Ponemos mucho esfuerzo en las canciones y ahora las canciones estaban recibiendo este tratamiento. Todavía es un poco surrealista para nosotros.

Habéis estado en el tour junto a Soilwork, Amorphis y Jinjer. Muchas fechas agotadas y puede ser, personalmente, una de las mejores giras de los últimos años. ¿Cómo os habéis sentido al estar en el tour junto a grandes bandas? ¿Y cómo surgió?

Raimund: Es un gran pack y un honor ser parte de esto. Muchos de los conciertos se han agotado y es la gira más grande que hemos tocado hasta ahora. Cuando nos enteramos de esta gira, inmediatamente pensamos que sería genial formar parte de ella y estamos muy contentos de haber sido elegidos como un apoyo. El año pasado, también trabajamos duramente en nuestro material para poder lanzarlo antes de la gira, y llegamos a la fecha límite final que tenemos para hacer esto posible.

Habéis estado en España en Madrid y Barcelona, ¿Cómo fueron estos conciertos para Nailed To Obscurity?

Raimund: Los conciertos en España han sido fenomenales. La gente se volvía loca y fue una gran sensación tocar para nuestros fans de España por primera vez. ¡No podemos esperar a volver! 

¿Cómo tenéis la agenda en este 2019? ¿Os podremos ver en España en algún festival de verano?

Raimund: Estaremos tocando en muchos festivales este verano pero hasta ahora no hay nada confirmado para España. Esperemos que que salga ésto. ¡Sería una maravilla!

First of all, thanks for having time for TNT Radio Rock and also, congratulations because "Black Frost" sounds great. This new album I think is the continuation of "King Delusion" but without being a copy. It is a step up. How would you define "Black Frost"?

Raimund: First of all: Thanks for the compliments towards the album. It's great to hear that you like it. I totally agree with you. The album is a logical step after "King Delusion" and it was very important for us to not just copy the style of that record. After we released "King Delusion", we were all very satisfied with the result. It would have been wrong to try to repeat that. We talked about the strengths of the band and defined the melancholy and the atmosphere as the most important ingredients. With the new material we wanted to go into an even darker direction and we wanted the material to be more atmospheric. Therefore, we tried to use more ambient sounds within the guitar parts, etc. But we also wanted to keep the band's general sound. The result is "Black Frost".

Each album is growing and the songs are more perfect and with more DNA to Nailed To Obscurity. How has the "Black Frost" writing process been?

Ole: Like always, Volker and I started writing the main riffs, melodies and some of the actual song structures first and then we took the basic ideas into the rehearsal room, where we worked out these ideas together as a band. The part where we sit together as a band is the most important and also the most time consuming part and that's how we always write songs. That took almost a year as we only come together on the weekends.

Speaking of the songs we have a contrast between death metal and the most melodic part. In "Tears of the Eyeless" we can hear the most melodic part. It reminds me of those early works of Anathema and even the whole atmosphere of Opeth I can also feel it ...

Raimund: We have our influences and the mentioned bands are definitely influences but we didn't think about that while we wrote that song. There was a certain fragility in the instrumental song and I really wanted to include that in the lyrics. I always had this picture in my mind that certain people seem "eyeless" to me. They act like robots or machines without emotions. This image fit so well with the song itself and while the clean-parts try to describe the protagonist and how she seems towards others, the growl-parts show that it's just a facade and that that even the eyeless cry.

"Road to Perdition" is very dynamic, progressive and to listen more than once. I think it was my favorite from the first time I heard the album. You do not try to do all things very fast or very technical. I think sometimes not everything has to be hard to play. Congratulations for the song and for finishing the album in this way. How did "Road to Perdition" come about?

Ole: I honestly don't remember how that song came together 😀 I never know actually... I only remember that the opening riff was the first one we wrote for the entire album. I'm glad you like it so much. It's a fun song to play and we agree that music does not always have to be technical and complicated. Though it can be pretty tough to play our songs live, because when everything is rather slow and melodic, you can hear mistakes quite easily 😀

"Black Frost" came out a few days ago, how are the first reactions? I give you a very good rating!

Raimund: The reactions have been overwhelmingly positive so far. It's one thing when you write and record an album. You don't really know how it will turn out in the end, even if you have a certain vision of the end result. But the reactions towards it from the outside are a completely different thing. We are very happy that the album has been so well received. And it's great to hear that you give it a good rating 🙂

It's your first album with Nuclear Blast and I suppose it's a pride to be on such an important record label in the world. How was the change of record label and what does it bring you to work with Nuclear Blast?

Raimund: We are very honored to be on the same roster with bands like Opeth, Slayer, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost... you name it 🙂 The change to a bigger label was a soft transition in a way (at first). Apostasy Records did a very good job for us and we worked with a great promotion company for "King Delusion". But we really came to realize how big this step is for us when we saw the views on our first video "Black Frost". That was the moment when we felt the impact of Nuclear Blast and that we made a huge step. From that day on, it was great to get such a strong promotion for our music. We put so much effort into the songs and now the songs were getting this treatment. It's still a little surreal for us.

You are on tour with Soilwork, Amorphis and Jinjer. Many sold out dates and can be, personally, one of the best tours of recent years. How do you feel being on tour with great bands like these? And how did it come about?

Raimund: It's a great package and an honor to be part of this. Many of the shows have been sold-out and it is the biggest tour we've played so far. When we heard about this tour, we immediately thought it would be great to be part of it and we are very happy that we were picked as a support act. Last year, we also worked hard on our material to be able to release it before the tour, and we hit the very final deadline we got to make this possible.

You will be in Spain in a couple of weeks in Madrid and Barcelona, what can we expect from Nailed To Obscurity?

Raimund: The shows in Spain have been phenomenal. The crowds were really going crazy and it was a great feeling to play for our Spanish fans for the very first time. We can't wait to come back!

How do you have the schedule in this 2019? Can we see you in Spain at a summer festival?

Raimund: We are playing a lot of festivals this summer but nothing is confirmed for Spain so far. Let's hope for that. It would be a blast!
