A canciones de The Clash como “Rudie Can’t Fail”, “Lost in the Supermarket” y demás.

¿Seguirá el estilo de “Bring back rock n roll from the dead”?

Explosivo, enérgico, sexual, hipnótico, intenso y, a menudo, teatral.

ENGLISH BELOW...

First of all, thank you very much for your time and for your music. We will have Neon Animal in a few days in Spain, for those who still don’t know you, how does this adventure begin?

Our first show kicks off in Pamplona on the 9th and then we're of around Galicia & the North of Spain before heading to Madrid on the 18th, Zaragoza on the 19th then making our way to the Basque country to play Barakaldo near Bilbao before ending the tour in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

If you're referring to the beginning of Neon Animal then I first met Jonathan Gaglione while recruiting a bassist to tour France with a band that was becoming more like a collection of musicians than a band as time went on. An opportunity arose to make Jonathan a permanent member which I seized upon. Miguel Martins came along on guitar and things started to get serious in terms of their musical ability and attitudes. Iv our drummer was recommended to me by the singer of Dirty Ol' Crow and his best friend. All this happened within 6 months and was tantamount to it being a new band so the logical step was to rename the animal which had transformed into a different beast. And so Neon Animal was born...

Neon Animal is not the typical rock and roll band that continuously come out and say "we are a rock and roll band because we drink whiskey and we look like bad people in the photos". Your sound ranges from punk to hard rock. At times you remind me of great bands. How do you define yourself?

I suspect that if we're not a typical rock 'n' roll band it's because we're not trying to define ourselves by those lifestyle cliches that have became worn like over-used accessories or rebellion disguised as consumerism. Sure some of us drink whiskey and may indulge in the usual excesses that the bad guy poses typify but they don't define who we are individually or collectively. I guess what makes us different is were not trying to state the blatantly obvious and we all have different musical backgrounds so therefore our songwriting develops more organically and is a reflection of our diverse experiences & personalities. The common thread that binds us is we believe rock 'n' roll is about freedom not fascism so we reject any limiting ideas. The sexs, drugs, rock 'n' roll formula is fine but for us it would be rock 'n' roll first then sex and drugs maybe but you have to buy them! As for the punk rock and hard rock. Yeah that connects to what you heard from us so far and that's always gonna be there in what we do. It's part of our DNA but it's not the whole story. We like to surprise ourselves and you too...

Listening to the EP that just came out, "God's Own Bastards", is still in your sound bands like The Clash, The Stooges, the CBGB scene ... Where do the songs for this EP come from? Is it an appetizer for the second LP?

Well yeah I will always loved the CBGB scene and the diversity and distinct identity of the bands who were part of it and there's certainly plenty of raw power in the energy that's there. I think identity in terms of the personality of a song is vital too. However there's a huge leap from the EP to what you're going to hear on the second LP. It's like a some great foreplay to get everyone turned on and ready for the big fuck! Kind of what "Live Like A Suicide" was to "Appetite For Destruction" except we recorded it in a church. Hence the title "God's Own Bastards". We were advised to release all four songs as individual singles by the sound engineer who did the mastering at Metropolis studios. He basically said each song is too good to be just album tracks and he's remastered everything from Led Zeppelin to The Prodigy.

"Bedtime Stories" in acoustic transports me to the album "London Calling." To The Clash songs like "Rudie Can not Fail", "Lost in the Supermarket" and so on, that acoustic touch is a wonder. What can you tell us about these 4 songs of the EP?

Well "Vive Le Rock" was a collaboration that was born from a drunken and drunk and drugged jam after a birthday party on a boat between us and our friends the Healthy Junkies. If someone hadn't recorded it we wouldn't have rembered it! We'd decided to call the tour we did together "Vive Le Rock" as it was in France. I wrote the verses half in French and English as Nina Courson the singer is French, I speak French and the tour was in France and every night of the tour we ended the night with that song. Miguel Martins our guitarist suggested it would be good to have an English version when we came to record it. In recent years it seemed like every week or month some rock icon was dying so rather than mourning that I decided to celebrate the immortality of their contribution to life and connect it with music magazine Vive Le Rock so the listening experience would kind of be like an aural equivalent of opening your favourite magazine and the excitement of reading about your favourite bands and bringing them alive again. "Change Your Sexuality" is the musical creation of our bassist Jonathan Gaglione is kind of like our "Lola" or "Dude Looks Like A Lady" except the dude in question looks like a dude and is basically a satire about getting hit on by members of the same sex. While "Dreaming" is quite an old song of mine given a Neon Animal makeover and a whole lotta love. and as for "Bedtime Stories" I wasn't 100% happy with how it turned out on the 1st album so we decided to re-visit it albeit in a different way.

You are already recording your second album, what can you tell us about it? Does the style of "Bring back rock n roll from the dead" continue?

Well the album's quite a big step away from the first album. It's probably veering more towards Hard Rock at times but the spirit of punk rock is alive and kicking in terms of attitude. It's stacked full of killer tracks including one with a surf, flamenco guitar vibe. It will be longer in length than "Bring back rock n roll from the dead" and it's more of a representation of a band as we now have spent 2 years or more together so of course that means more collaboration. We recorded in Porto again due to Miguel's connections but in a different and better studio with producer and artist Andres Indiana.

You don’t have any record label to help you with the album and you have asked the help of the fans to help you with the album. What opinion do you have of the record labels? Does not the suit and tie benefit Rock and Roll?

At the moment we have Cargo Records involved in the distribution but we'll be talking to labels for sure to see and if we find one that share's the same or similar vision then we're interested. I think it depends on the label. It can be a curse and a blessing. As long as they don't interfere with the creative process in a heavy handed way it can be a bonus but we will do it with or without them. In a way nowadays the fans have become the new record labels with the crowdfunding or pledge campaigns. And it's their money that can help a band record the album that they want to record and consequently the album the fans want to hear. We have our own campaign with Indiegogo. Making albums is an expensive business as is touring and how quickly our second album is released depends on you guys now as record labels aren't taking risks anymore.

In the title of your first work you want to recover that rock and roll of good times. How do you see the R&R scene in such a “fast-food” world? That is, there is no variety and it is consumed without emotion.

Well I think there's too many bland's (banda's que son aburrido e insípido) or band's meaning packaged band's who have commodified themselves and their music to conform to what R&R has become to be in the 21st century. Namely a conveniently labeled bunch of categories to unimaginatively jump into so you'll be accepted in whatever scene you want to be in at the expense of creativity. A by product of this is a one dimensional type of band who sound pretty much the same and are sacrificing songs for style. An endless parade of pointless parodies and bands who's song's all sound pretty much the same manufactured in the same "factory".

In a few days you will be in Spain for a few nights of fun and good atmosphere. What does Spain mean for Neon Animal? What do you expect from this tour (tour-tilla as you wrote on Facebook)?

We're all extremely excited to come and play in Spain. Seriously it's a rock 'n' roll dream come true. The enthusiasm of the Spanish rock 'n' roll community, promoters, fans and press is very contagious and we are feeling it already. I can imagine the audience here will be more lively than England if my Spanish friends are a measure of that. My outside impression is that the rock scene in Spain is very authentic and will be very receptive to Neon Animal's no bullshit philosophy. Spain is not scared to have fun and neither are we! This is just the beginning of our rock 'n' roll romance with Spain and the honeymoon hasn't even begun!

Finally, for the undecided, how is a show of the band? How are you in the closest environments?

Explosive, energetic, sexual, hypnotic, intense and often theatrical. Make sure you've bought your drinks before we hit the stage 'cause you won't wanna take your eyes off us.

Thank you very much for everything and we hope to hear soon the continuation of "Bring back R & R from the dead"!!
