Entrevista con Jouni Mikkonen (Darkwoods My Betrothed): "Tenemos un fuerte mensaje anticristiano"
Después de 23 años de silencio, el grupo finlandés de culto DARKWOODS MY BETROTHED publica su nuevo disco "Angel of Carnage Unleashed " este 12 de noviembre a través de Napalm Records y para celebrar este acontecimiento, TNT Radio Rock ha querido entrevistar a su guitarrista y miembro fundador de la banda Jouni Mikkonen. La banda cuenta también con los miembros originales Pasi Kankkunen – voz y guitarra; Teemu Kautonen – bajo, junto a Tuomas Holopainen - teclados- y Kai Hahto a la batería (ambos de Nightwish)

TNT: En primer lugar quería darte las gracias por dedicarnos parte de tu tiempo y en segundo lugar, felicitarte por el álbum.
La banda nació en 1993, pero se separó en 1998. Ahora está de vuelta con vuestro cuarto álbum, el primero en 23 años. ¿Por qué os separasteis? ¿Y por qué este regreso?
Jouni: Gracias, es genial poder finalmente sacar el álbum. De hecho, nunca renunciamos oficialmente, pero las actividades solo han cesado ocasionalmente y no hemos estado activos. Estuvimos discutiendo durante 10-15 años que deberíamos hacer un álbum más. Sentimos que la historia de la banda aún estaba en progreso. Ahora era el momento adecuado en la vida de los miembros de la banda para finalmente lograr esto.
TNT: Vuestro primer álbum "Heirs of the Northstar" de 1995 contenía temas de mitología vikinga, en el segundo "Autumn Roars Thunder" de 1996 adoptasteis historias de la Edad Media en Finlandia. ¿Cuáles son los temas que le interesan a la banda ahora en el momento de componer canciones?
Jouni: El tema de "Angel Of Carnage Unleashed" es la Gran Guerra del Norte, que estalló en 1700-1721. De allí extraemos la locura de la guerra, el sufrimiento de los individuos en medio de la guerra y la crueldad de la naturaleza. Ese momento fue el más oscuro en la historia de Finlandia, por lo que también fue un gran terreno para crear black metal.
TNT: En 1998 decidisteis crear otro grupo paralelo, Furthest Shore, para dar rienda suelta al tema vikingo. ¿También habéis pensado en resucitarlo?
Jouni: Estoy bastante seguro de que Furthest Shore ya no se activará porque trajimos sus elementos a Darkwoods My Betrothed.
TNT: Desde la perspectiva de los años, ¿cómo ves la escena black finlandesa y qué diferencias hay con los 90?
Jouni: Hay una gran cantidad de bandas en la actualidad y principalmente están desarrolladas de manera más cualitativa y productiva que en los 90. El black metal finlandés se ha convertido en su propia subespecie identificable, caracterizada por su originalidad e intransigencia. Además, el entorno operativo ha cambiado mucho desde entonces, p. Ej. debido a las redes sociales.
TNT: Volviendo al día de hoy, con el tema de la pandemia, ¿fue difícil grabar el álbum y la composición de las canciones? ¿Cómo lo hicisteis?
Jouni: De hecho, la pandemia y el trabajo a distancia con herramientas modernas hicieron que esto fuera posible para nosotros, ya que ensayar juntos hubiera sido imposible. Compusimos las canciones por separado, luego compartimos las versiones de las demos y las desarrollamos juntos. La primera vez que nos juntamos fue en las grabaciones de la batería. Así que la forma de trabajar era bastante diferente a la anterior, pero funcionó muy bien.
TNT: Me llamó la atención la portada: interpreto que son campesinos finlandeses que van a la batalla de Napue. ¿Es "Angel of Carnage Unleashed" un álbum conceptual? ¿Puedes contarnos la historia detrás de la letra?
Jouni: Sí, es específicamente un álbum conceptual. Los conceptos de las letras fueron desarrollados conjuntamente por nuestro bajista Teemu Kautonen y el autor y antropólogo Dr. Steven Parham, y se basan en el libro del conocido historiador finlandés Dr. Teemu Keskisarja 'Murhanenkeli' (literalmente: 'Angel of Murder' -"angel del asesinato") como principal fuente. El libro trata de la historia social de la Gran Guerra del Norte de 1700-1721 desde la perspectiva finlandesa. Para las letras, la historia social significa que no escribimos sobre las aventuras de los reyes y las campañas de guerra; en su lugar, nos enfocamos en cómo los finlandeses individuales, ya sea en la línea del frente o en el frente interno, experimentaron los estragos de la época.

TNT: ¿Quién o qué es el "Ángel de la Carnicería"Angel of Carnage ?
Jouni: Ángel de la carnicería, y las otras expresiones sinónimos utilizadas a lo largo de la letra, fue una frase utilizada en el siglo XVIII para referirse a los muchos males, como la peste, el hambre y la guerra, enviados por Dios para castigar a las personas por sus pecados. Por tanto, la guerra fue vista como el castigo de Dios, entregado por él al pueblo al guiar las mentes de los reyes hacia el derramamiento de sangre.
TNT: Personalmente, me han gustado las canciones más largas como “In Evil, Sickness, and in Grief” o “In Thrall to Ironskull’s Heart” -con un comienzo tan melódico- con esas partes lentas intercaladas con música extrema. ¿Cómo definirías vuestro estilo?
Jouni: No quiero poner nuestra música en una categoría en particular porque tiene muchos elementos diferentes y depende de qué tan profundamente interpretes la letra, es decir, si esto representa el black metal o qué. Alguien puede pensar que no, a pesar de que tenemos un mensaje anticristiano muy fuerte.
TNT: ¿Cuáles son las bandas que más han influido en vuestro sonido?
Jouni: No puedo nombrar sólo una banda, pero en general, en nuestro sonido se escucha música metal de los 80 y 90. Claro, bandas como Bathory, Darkthrone y Emperor nos han influenciado mucho, pero escuchamos música a una escala tan grande que las influencias también vienen de otros lugares.
TNT: ¿Habéis tenido la oportunidad de tocar en vivo desde vuestra reunión?
Jouni: Después de la reunión nos centramos en mezclar y terminar el disco, y no hemos vuelto a tocar juntos desde entonces. Tuomas y Kai están ocupados con Nightwish y Teemu se acaba de mudar al extranjero, por lo que el ensayo y los conciertos son prácticamente imposibles.
TNT: Finalmente, ¿podremos veros en España? ¿Qué planes tenéis de cara a hacer una gira por Europa?
Jouni: Como decía en la pregunta anterior, prácticamente no podemos ensayar ni tocar, por lo que, lamentablemente, es posible que tengaís que esperar mucho tiempo. ¡Pero nunca digas nunca!

First I wanted to thank you for dedicating some of your time to us and secondly, to congratulate you on the album.
TNT: The band was born in 1993 but you broke up in 1998. Now you are back with your fourth album, the first in 23 years. Why did you part? And why this return?
Answer:
Thanks, it's great to finally get the album out.
In fact, we never officially resigned, but the activities have only occasionally ceased, and we have not been active. We had been discussing for 10-15 years that we should make one more album. We felt that the band’s story was still in progress. Now was just the right time in the lives of the band members to finally accomplish this.
TNT: Your first album "Heirs of the Northstar" from 1995 contained Viking mythology themes, on the second "Autumn Roars Thunder" from 1996 you adopted stories from the Middle Ages in Finland. What are the topics that interest the band now when composing songs?
Answer:
The theme of “Angel Of Carnage Unleashed” is the Great Northern War, which raged in 1700-1721. From it we drew the madness of war, the suffering of individuals in the midst of war, and the ruthlessness of nature. That time was the darkest time in Finnish history, so it was also great ground to create black metal.
TNT: In 1998 you decided to create another parallel group Furthest Shore to unleash the Viking theme. Have you also thought about resuscitating it?
Answer:
I’m pretty sure Furthest Shore won’t be activated anymore because we brought its elements back to Darkwoods My Betrothed.
TNT: From the perspective of the years, how do you see the Finnish black scene and what differences are there with the 90s?
Answer:
There are a huge number of bands today and they are mainly more qualitatively and productively developed than in the 90s. Finnish black metal has developed into its own identifiable subspecies, characterized by originality and uncompromisingness. In addition, the operating environment has changed a lot since then, e.g. because of social media.
TNT: Going back to today, with the theme of the pandemic, was it difficult to record the album and the composition of the songs? How did you do it?
Answer:
In fact, the pandemic and working remotely with modern tools made this possible for us, as training together would have been impossible. We composed the songs separately, then shared the demo versions with each other and developed them together. The first time we got together was on drum recordings. So the way of working was quite different from before, but it worked great.
TNT: The cover caught my attention: I interpret that they are Finnish peasants who go to the battle of Napue. Is "Angel of Carnage Unleashed" a concept album? Can you tell us the story behind the lyrics?
Answer:
Yes, it is specifically a concept album. The concepts for the lyrics were developed jointly by our bass player Teemu Kautonen and author-anthropologist Dr Steven Parham, and draw on the well-known Finnish historian Dr Teemu Keskisarja’s book ‘Murhanenkeli’ (verbatim: ‘Angel of Murder’) as the principal source. The book deals with the social history of the Great Northern War of 1700-1721 from the Finnish perspective. For the lyrics, social history means that we don’t write about the adventures of kings and war campaigns; instead we focus on how individual Finns – either at the frontline or on the home front – experienced the ravages of the era.
A separate blog will be published about the lyrics, so you should definitely follow it.
TNT: Who or what is the "Angel of Carnage"?
Answer:
Angel of Carnage – and the other synonymous expressions used throughout the lyrics – was a phrase used in the 18th century to refer to the many ills, such as plague, famine, and war, sent by God to punish people for their sins. War was thus seen as God’s punishment, delivered by him unto the people by guiding the minds of kings towards bloodshed.
TNT: Personally, I have liked the longer songs like “In Evil, Sickness, and in Grief” or “In Thrall to Ironskull’s Heart” -with such a melodic beginning- with those slow parts interspersed with extreme music. How would you define your style?
Answer:
I don’t want to put our music in a particular category because it has so many different elements and depends on how deeply you interpret the lyrics, i.e. whether this represents black metal or what. Someone may think not, even though we have a very strong anti-christian message.
TNT: What are the bands that have influenced your sound the most?
Answer:
I can’t name just one band, but in general, 80s and 90s metal music is heard in our sound. Sure, bands like Bathory, Darkthrone and Emperor have influenced us a lot, but we listen to music on such a large scale that influences come a lot from elsewhere as well.
TNT: Have you had the opportunity to play live since your meeting?
Answer:
After the meeting, we focused on mixing and finishing the record, and we haven’t played together since. Tuomas and Kai are busy with Nightwish and Teemu has just moved abroad, so rehearsal and gigs are practically impossible.
TNT: Finally, can we see you in Spain? What plans do you have to tour Europe?
Answer:
As I answered in the previous question, we can’t practically rehearse and play gigs, so unfortunately you may have to wait a very long time. But never say never!
