11/09 – SALA MONASTERIO – Barcelona
12/09 – URBAN ROCK CONCEPT – Vitoria
13/09 – ESCENARIO SANTANDER – Santander
14/09 – SALASON – Cangas do Morrazo
15/09 – THE BOURBON LIVE – Yuncos

4 años desde “Thrill of the Night”. ¿Cómo han sido estos 4 años?
- ¡Gracias!

“It’s Only Straight From The Heart”.

¡Saludos!
- ¡Gracias a ti! ¡Estamos deseando liarla en España!

ENGLISH BELOW...

- Thank you for your time and for this amazing album too. We are with "Viva La Paradise", an album that smells of hard rock in every corner. 4 years since "Thrill of the Night". How have you been these 4 years?
- Thank you! Even though it’s been four years since “Thrill Of The Night”, it doesn’t seem like it! After its release we did quite a few gigs and festivals in Sweden, Italy, Spain, USA, Norway etc. We also worked on the re-issue of “Time Elevation” and “Idolizer”, where I added some new guitar to a couple of songs, plus I did new artwork for both releases (we had to for contractual reasons – our previous label wanted too much money for us to use it). Then our drummer Magnus Ulfstedt left the band to concentrate on playing bass in Eclipse and we spent some time auditioning drummers (we borrowed Perra Johansson from Coldspell for our shows, plus he plays on the album). We started writing songs for the new album and then Mats Vassfjord decided to leave and concentrate on 220 Vol. We however found Stefan pretty quickly and he came in just in time to play bass on the album. When the album was almost done, we finally found Jocke.

- Thanks for this incredible album. For those of us who like hard rock and melodic rock, "Viva La Paradise" is a prize. How has the recording process been?
- This time we worked a bit differently. “Thrill Of The Night” was the first album where Pelle, let in other songwriters and this time it was even more of a band effort. I and Dennis wrote and recorded a bunch of song ideas, riffs etc and played for Pelle. The stuff he immediately got a feel for, he kept and started working on. Then he created a basic demo with just simple drums, guitars and bass. We kept going back and forth a bit, maybe change something, add a part, change a part etc. Then, when the songs felt “ready”, I and Dennis started recording guitars. We always record at Pelle’s studio Underground (a profesional studio where he has recorded hundreds of albums). During the recording session we may come up with a new idea, a change of arrangement etc., so the song isn’t really set in stone. When the guitars were finished, Stefan recorded the bass, and last Perra came in to lay down the drums. Jocke added some bits after wards as well. When all the musical parts were ready, Pelle started recording the vocals and I brought the recordings home to record the solos in my studio. When it was all finished, Pelle locked himself up in the studio and started mixing.

- Listening to your album is like traveling 40 years ago. You have a very classic hard rock sound that fits perfectly in the decade of the '80s. How did you get this formula in your albums? Is awesome…
- Thanks! Well, when Pelle started the band, his vision was to create a band that could “take over” where Def Leppard left off after “Adrenalized”, since they he loved that sound and style, and Def Leppard didn’t sound like that anymore. So, he really studied John “Mutt” Lange’s production methods and sounds. He’s still tried to get each album a slightly different touch. I think you’ll hear on "Viva La Paradise", that the guitar and drums sounds are a bit different, plus the guitars are a bit louder in the mix. We wanted a heavier edge on this album, but still stay true to the 80s, so this time he listened a bit more to early TNT for sound references.

- For me, there is a song that has kicked my head. "It's Only Straight From The Heart". It's a fucking bullet, a wine with 20 years. How did this wonder come about?
- That is one example of a collaboration between me and Pelle. I had the intro riff laying around and couldn’t come up with a verse that I liked. I sent it to Pelle, and he just went off with it and came up with the verse and chorus. This is actually the first ever Grand Design song where I use a wah wah in the solo. The lyrics, written by Pelle, is about female infidelity. It’s about a woman who takes love and fidelity very lightly. Love? Whatever – it’s only straight from the heart. Who cares?

- A few days ago you released the video of "Viva La Paradise". In the video, there are pieces of you on the road with fans and your day to day. Why this song and what does the song mean to you?
- Well, being out on the road, playing shows, hanging out with fans and friends, it’s a slice of paradise actually. In the crazy, fucked up world of today we need that slice of paradise, a rock ‘n roll show, big city lights and pink champagne, to escape reality, to have fun, to just rock it out! That’s what we want our audience to feel as well. Viva La Paradise!!!

- Last year Stefan Westerlund came on bass and Joakim Jonsson on drums. What have Stefan and Joakim contributed on the fourth album?
- Our previous couple drummers have been exceptionally great. Magnus Ulfstedt and Peter Hermansson were two powerhouse drummers who weren’t easy to replace. We went through a lot of auditions before we found Joakim. He’s a silent guy, but he sure takes it out on the drums! He’s a really easy going guy as well. Stefan is a rock steady bass player and a great guitarist as well. Both he and Joakim are record collectors, like me, so we have a lot in common. Stefan and Joakim are really tight together and you can depend on those guys, steady and solid. The current line-up is a bunch of fun guys who get along great and play great!

- Almost half a year with the album released, what impressions do you have regarding the reception of the audience?
- It’s been awesome! We’ve received great reviews and the first pressing of the CD sold out pretty quickly, which is amazing in this day and age! We play 3-4 songs off the album live and they have been really well received! We’re on a great label that works great with the band! We’re truly happy with the reception!

- The cover of "Viva La Paradise" represents the conquest of the planet by the band. The design of the guitar-ship reminds me of Star Wars. Do you have something to do? Tell us about it.
- Haha, I’m afraid it has nothing to do with Star Wars. We went through a couple of ideas that we weren’t entirely happy with. Then Pelle suggested maybe we should go for something in the vein of the Boston albums, a guitar space ship. I thought it was a great idea and started working on a mock-up. I licensed the space photo, and took some photos of my own white Gibson Flying V. I sent my mock-up and the photos to Carl Beckston at Blekkmark Design. He put it together nicely, added a cool structure to the guitar, and added the spaceman and some cool effects. I then did the layout for the rest. There’s actually a difference between the first and second press of the CD. I made a blatant spelling error on the first version. If you look at the front, clear box, it says “Melldic hard rock”. So, on the second press I removed that and added an extension of the guitar. So, the first press will be a rarity, haha.

- We are seeing new bands with great quality of AOR, hard rock or melodic rock. Although you already have 4 albums, how do you see this new wave of classic genres today?
- I think it’s awesome that younger bands pick up the 70s and 80s hard rock. I get so happy and excited every time I see a young girl or boy shredding on YouTube, a new melodic hard rock band with young guys and girls playing. That they actually learn to play real instruments instead of playing with their phones, or deejaying, or just play with different softwares. It feels great that they will continue the legacy of hard rock!

- Looking to the nearest future, what are the most immediate plans of the band?
- This weekend we will be rehearsing for the upcoming tour of Spain. We have added some new and old songs in the set so we need to sound good. We’ve got a beer coming out in Sweden in a few weeks – Grand Design Rawker Brew! Since we’re dealing with all the planning and business side ourselves there’s quite a lot of time that goes into planning, booking, artwork etc etc.

- Now you come to Spain for a tour in 5 dates. What opinion do you have of Spain and the audience?
- It’s actually 6 dates! We added one show in Barcelona on September 11 at the Sala Monasterio! We’ve played in Barcelona before and we totally loved it! We were really looking forward to coming back! We have quite a lot of fans, very dedicated people, in Spain and we’re looking forward to seeing them again, and hopefully we’ll gain a lot of new fans as well. I’m personally also a big fan of Spanish hard rock and heavy metal (Manzano, Obus, Fuzz, The Storm, Tapiman, Niagara, Sangre Azul, Jupiter, Baron Rojo, Zarpa, etc) so I’ll definitely do some record hunting as well (I just need find the good stuff before Stefan and Joakim) , hahahaha.

- Thank you very much for the interview and see you at the show. Regards!
- Thank you! And we’re really looking forward to rocking out in Spain!!
