Entrevista con FLORENCE BLACK

De la mano de Lestrato Rock la banda británica Florence Black está de visita en nuestro país estos días. Esta banda de hard rock originaria de la ciudad Merthyr Tydfil al sur de Gales, está considerada como una de las nuevas sensaciones en las islas. Los mismísimos AC/DC han llegado a apoyar uno de sus crowdfunding en el 2016 y han llegado a ser comparados con bandas de la altura de Alter Bridge. Esta formación se ha convertido en uno de los clásicos de los festivales británicos, llegando también a ser teloneros de bandas como Stone Sour o Skindred.

Con todos estos alicientes esta cita se nos hace más que apetecible. Los de Gales vienen a presentar su nuevo trabajo “The Final EP”, publicado el 20 de abril de este año, y será la primera vez que visiten nuestro país.

Las fechas restantes de su gira son las siguientes:

• 17 de mayo – Maliaño en La Tribu

Desde TNT Radio Rock hemos tenido la ocasión de poder entrevistar a la propia banda.

Primer de todo, muchas gracias por vuestro tiempo y buena suerte en este viaje por España. Empezamos por el principio obviamente. ¿Cómo surge Florence Black en un país como Reino Unido?

¡Muchas gracias! Empezamos a tocar covers en pequeños pubs de Gales durante un año. Sacando a la vez canciones nuestras que habíamos escrito. Después del primer año, nos transformamos para tocar todas las originales, y las tocamos donde pudimos. Eso es todo lo que puedes hacer, escribir la música que te gusta y luego tocarla donde puedas.

El EP definitivo. “The Final EP” contiene 5 canciones cargado de grandes dosis de hard rock con un aspecto más metal que por ejemplo vuestro EP “Florence Black”. Con un sonido muy poderoso y con Tristan dejando una voz increíble en cada canción, ¿qué significa para vosotros “The Final EP”?

Es un sonido mucho más pesado que el primer EP. Cuando grabamos el primer EP, tuvimos la mentalidad de conseguir llegar a Radio AirPlay, lo cual se logró conseguir... llegando a personajes como Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) y más. Con “The Final EP” grabamos directamente desde el corazón sin preocuparnos por las emisoras de radio que piensan que es 'demasiado heavy'. Siempre hemos sido una banda heavy. Pero este EP representa el poder que aportamos a nuestras actuaciones en vivo.

Escuchando todos vuestros temas, en estos últimos se nota un incremento de calidad en el sonido. Suena muy trabajado y con una producción bastante notable. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación del EP?

Fue un proceso maravilloso grabar las 5 canciones. Agradecido a Jeff Rose por grabarlo. Hizo exactamente lo que queríamos. Nos llevó alrededor de 4-6 semanas para grabarlo. Fuimos al estudio para mezclarlo y hacer la masterización con él y, ¡estamos muy orgullosos del resultado!

La última canción es “Hasta la vista”. Parece un mensaje para los fans diciendo como: “Nos veremos en los conciertos”. Además, el título en español recuerda a “Fiesta” en otro EP. ¿Hay alguna especial relación con el idioma español o es casualidad?

Siempre nos ha encantado España. ¡Esta es la primera vez que hemos viajado/tocado en directo aquí y parece irreal! “Fiesta” fue la primera canción del primer EP, así que pensamos que comenzaríamos con una canción de fiesta para que los pies de la gente se movieran. “Hasta la vista” era una canción antigua que revivimos, pensamos que era el momento perfecto para sacarla junto con nuestra gira por España.

“Gunshot” es literalmente un disparo. Me encantaría escuchar esta canción en directo. Quizás es la canción con más energía y con un estribillo para sudar toda la cerveza que se haya bebido. Esos gritos en la voz en partes de la canción son increíbles y dan mucho color a la canción. ¿Qué nos podéis contar sobre “Gunshot”?

¡Gracias! Escribimos esta canción muy rápido. Le preguntamos a Benji Webbe en Bloodstock si aparecería en una pista con nosotros. Después de que él dijera que sí, bajamos la cabeza y escribimos lo que pensamos que sería la canción perfecta para cantarla. Los gritos vinieron de una sensación natural de la canción, sentimos que da a la canción un poco más de explosión, como un arma. Se llegó a más de 139.000 visualizaciones que aún no podemos creer.

En la portada podemos ver que una mujer bebe veneno y como que el alma se va con el espacio de fondo. ¿Qué queréis contar con la idea de la portada?

La portada fue diseñada por Matt Riste. Esto es lo que dijo: "Pensé que habría que jugar en el aspecto de “The Final EP” con la chica bebiendo veneno, pero retratando el próximo capítulo con el espíritu que la deja." El próximo capítulo será nuestro álbum debut.

Cuando escucho Florence Black es inevitable pensar en una figura como Myles Kennedy y Alter Bridge. Supongo que lo habrán dicho alguna vez pero siempre estamos con el mundo de las clasificaciones. ¿Cuáles son las influencias de Florence Black?

Amamos tantos tipos diferentes de música y géneros que es muy difícil de decir. Si tuviéramos que elegir tres bandas... sería: Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden y AC/DC.

Hace unos días hicísteis vuestro primer sold out en Londres. Tiene que ser un orgullo ver todas las entradas vendidas para un concierto. ¿Se esperabais esto? ¿Cuáles fueron los primeros pensamientos al ver el cartel de sold out?

Fue una sensación especial. Hemos hecho sold out en algunos espectáculos locales antes... pero Londres es uno de los grandes. ¡Definitivamente fue uno para recordar! Y traerá el siguiente ?

Para este verano tenéis una fecha clave en Suiza. El 25 de junio estaréis en Lausanne junto a Stone Sour otra vez después del concierto en París. ¿Cómo surgió esta fecha y qué supone para vosotros compartir noche con una de las voces más importantes del metal?

Sí, acabamos de tener otra cita con Stone Sour. Corey Taylor nos invitó a tocar en un espectáculo sold out en París el año pasado que estaba fuera de este mundo. Tener una relación con el dios del metal es algo que llevaremos a nuestras tumbas. ¡Suiza va a estar fuera de la cadena!

“The Final EP” parece ser el punto y final para dar el siguiente paso para un LP. ¿No hay prisa para un LP? ¿Hay algo ya pensado?

Todavía no nos apresuramos en el LP. Tenemos muchas canciones, y todavía se está escribiendo en el camino. Pero te prometemos que valdrá la pena la espera. ?

En cuanto a 2018, ¿cómo se presenta esta segunda mitad de año respecto al tour?

Tenemos algunas giras más programadas para este año. Uno con la banda Crazy Town que anunciaremos muy pronto. ¡Esperamos volver a España muy pronto también!

Vais a estar en 6 fechas en España con un ambiente tremendo seguro. ¿Cómo creéis que va a ser este viaje y este tour por tierras españolas?

¡Será el mejor momento de nuestras vidas! ¡El sol, la cerveza, las mujeres y la escena musical se ve en España!

First of all, thank you very much for your time and good luck on this trip through Spain. We start at the beginning obviously. How does Florence Black emerge in a country like the United Kingdom?

Thank you very much! We started playing Cover songs in small welsh pubs for 1 year. Throwing in a few original tracks we had written. After the first year we converted to play ALL originals. And played them everywhere we could. That’s all you can do, write music which you love and then play it everywhere you can.

The definitive EP. "The Final EP" contains 5 songs loaded with large doses of hard rock with a more metal look than for example your EP "Florence Black". With a very powerful sound and with Tristan showing an incredible voice in each song, what does "The Final EP" mean to you?

It is a much heavier sound than the first EP. When we recorded the first EP we had the mindset of getting some Radio AirPlay, which it managed to get..  reaching the likes of Corey Taylor (slipknot), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) and more. With the final EP we recorded straight from the heart not worrying about Radio stations thinking it’s ‘too heavy’. We’ve always been a heavy band. But this EP represents the power that we bring to our live performances.

Listening to all your songs, in these last ones an increase of quality in the sound is noticed. It sounds very worked and with a quite remarkable production. How was the recording process of "The Final EP"?

It was a wonderful process recording the 5 tracks. Big thanks to Jeff Rose for recording it, he did exactly what we wanted. It took around 4-6 weeks to record. We went down the studio to mix and master it with him and we are very proud of the outcome!

The last song is "Hasta la vista". It seems like a message to fans saying, "See you at the shows." In addition, the title in Spanish remembers "Fiesta" in another EP. Is there any special relationship with the Spanish language or is it casuality?

We’ve always loved spain. This being the first time we’ve actually toured/gigged here feels unreal! Fiesta was the first track of the first EP so we thought we would start with a ‘party’ track to get peoples feet tapping. Hasta la vista was an old track which we brought back to life, we thought it was perfect timing to release it along with our Spanish tour.

"Gunshot" is literally a shot. I would love to hear this song in a show. Maybe it's the song with more energy and with a chorus to sweat all the beer that has been drunk. Those shouts in the voice in parts of the song are incredible and give a lot of color to the song. What can you tell us about "Gunshot"?

Thanks. We wrote this song VERY quickly. We asked Benji Webbe in Bloodstock would he feature in a track with us. After he said yes, we got our heads down and wrote what we thought would be the perfect track for him to sing on. The shouts came from a natural feel to the song, we felt it gives the song that little bit more explosion, like a gun. It’s reached over 139,000 views which we still can’t quite believe.

On the cover of the album we can see that a woman drinks poison and the soul goes with the space in the background. What do you want to express with the idea of the cover?

The artwork was designed by Matt Riste. This is what he said “Thought I’d play on the ‘final ep’ aspect with the girl drinking poison, but portraying the next chapter with the spirit leaving her.” The next chapter will be our debut Album.

When I listen to Florence Black it is inevitable to think of a figure like Myles Kennedy and Alter Bridge. I suppose they have said it once but we are always with the world of labels. What are the influences of Florence Black?

We love so many different types of music and genres it’s so hard to say. If we had to choose three bands... it would be: Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden and AC/DC.

A few days ago you made your first sold out in London. It must be a pride to see all tickets sold for a concert. Did you expect this? What were the first thoughts on seeing this sold out?

It was a special feeling. We’ve sold out a few hometown shows before... but London is a big one. It was definitely one to remember! And bring on the next one ?

For this summer you have a key date in Switzerland. On June 25 you will be in Lausanne with Stone Sour again after the show in Paris. How did this date arise and what does it mean for you to share a night with one of the most important voices of metal?

Yes we’ve just landed another date with Stone Sour! Corey Taylor invited us to play a sold out show in Paris last year which was out of this world. To have a relationship with the god of metal is something we will take to our graves. Switzerland is going to be off the chain!!!

"The Final EP" seems to be the final point to take the next step for an LP. Is not there a rush for an LP? Is there something already thought?

We’re not rushing into the LP yet. We have plenty of songs. And still are writing on the road. But we promise you it will be worth the wait. ?

For 2018, how is this second half of the year presented with respect to the dates of your tour?

We have a few more tours scheduled for this year. One with the band Crazy Town which we will be announcing very soon. We hope to return back to Spain very soon too!

You are going to be in 6 dates in Spain with a party atmosphere and with desire for fun. How do you think this trip and this tour of Spanish lands will be?

It’s going to be the best time of our lives! The Sun, the beer, the women and the music scene is SPOT ON out in Spain.
