Entrevista con COLDSPELL
Una de las bandas suecas que más presente y futuro tienen por delante estarán dentro de una semana en nuestra país por primera vez en su trayectoria. De la mano de Lestrato, ColdSpell vendrán presentando su cuarto trabajo que lleva por nombre “A New World Arise”, un álbum redondo donde se junta el hard rock clásico, con toques de metal y progresivo. Grabado en Suecia el año pasado y mezclado Tommy Hansen (Helloween, Jorn, Pretty Maids…), este último trabajo salió el pasado mes de septiembre y ha recibido elogios allá donde han hablado de ColdSpell.
Como dicen la gente de Lestrato: "Los de Kiruna vienen a presentarnos su cuarto disco “A New World Arise” que ha cosechado grandes críticas en los principales medios especializados… pero ColdSpell es sobretodo una banda de directo, y ahí es donde nosotros los disfrutaremos de cerca en una gira con 5 fechas en el norte peninsular… así que ya lo sabes, prepárate a disfrutar el próximo mes de febrero".

Os dejamos la entrevista que hemos tenido la suerte de hacer al compositor y guitarrista de la banda, Michael Larsson:
Primero de todo, muchas gracias por tener tiempo para responder a las preguntas y enhorabuena por este último álbum tan perfecto. “A New World Arise” creo que es una mezcla entre el hard rock más clásico, alcanzando niveles de Whitesanke, Heat o Thunder. Tiene riffs contundentes y una atmósfera que te envuelve rápido. Sobresaliente. ¿Cómo describiríais vuestro último trabajo y cómo está funcionando?
Muchas gracias, tus palabras tan cariñosas ponen en mi cara una sonrisa. Creo que lo que describes dice mucho porque creo que es una mezcla de diferentes tipos de hard rock y metal con los que crecí. Como dices, es un hardrock clásico con metal y algunas cosas progresivas aquí y allá. Creo que las reacciones sobre el álbum han sido mejores de lo que podía esperar, y ya sabes, cuando sacamos 3 álbumes antes con críticas impresionantes, entonces empiezas a pensar que tal vez se haya terminado, jaja. No, en serio, para ser sincero, creo que es el álbum, y las canciones, lo que nos hacen sentir mejor hasta ahora, aunque cada álbum cuenta su propia historia y, cuando los escuchas a todos, probablemente sientas la conexión entre ellos. Es ColdSpell.
“Losin’ My Mind” creo que es la canción que puede resumir la idea del álbum, aunque éste sea muy variado. Agresivo desde el principio hasta el final de la canción y ese ritmo de guitarra en varias ocasiones jugando con el progresivo. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de creación de temas como “Losin’ My Mind”?
Oh, eso es interesante y esa canción fue una de esas que pensé que tal vez no es una canción de ColdSpell, pero cuando pusimos todas las canciones juntas, sentí como que pertenecían al álbum y le da quizás otra dimensión. No es uno de esos éxitos de radio instantáneos, pero es una de mis canciones preferidas. Esa canción y la idea han estado dando vueltas un tiempo y el proceso no es más complicado que "coge tu guitarra y toca y luego el resto seguirá" jajaja.
En “Love Me Like You Do” hay melodías de banjo que le dan color al álbum con blues. No parece que ColdSpell haga las cosas sin pensar y por eso creo que tenéis muchas influencias de muchos géneros diferentes. ¿Cómo surgió “Love Me Like You Do” y qué influencias tiene el grupo en general?
Gracias y sí, esa es una de las canciones que está influenciada por el tipo de hard rock más blues y fue la canción que decidí llevar en el último minuto, una canción de hard rock clásico con esa inspiración sureña y sentí que usar ese dobro para la introducción y el verso eran un acierto. Las influencias en general son de todo tipo, desde rock hasta metal más extremo, y cuando se trata de mí, no estoy atrapado en un cierto género, es más como: "si es bueno, es bueno".
“It Hurts” se ha convertido en mi favorita sin duda alguna. Enamorado de la melodía que te transporta a unas calles desérticas y frías, además de un gran trabajo de Niclas a la voz aquí como en todo el álbum. El disco salió en Septiembre, ¿Cómo ha acogido el público las nuevas canciones en directo?
Muchas gracias. me alegra que te guste esa canción y sientes que es una de las canciones que te gusta tener en directo. Sí, fue en septiembre y, con los conciertos que hemos hecho, parece que las nuevas canciones funcionan bien en directo y hasta ahora solo han tenido un feedback positivo al tocarlas en vivo.
En “A New World Arise” seguís como siempre, trasmitiendo un mensaje con vuestras letras que no es el típico mensaje de la mayoría de las bandas de hard rock o metal melódico actualmente. No os interesa hablar sobre el whisky ni mujeres. Habláis sobre el mundo, la oscuridad y la esperanza. ¿Cómo surgen estas letras?
Al menos no interesa hacer canciones sobre eso, jajaja. Supongo que eran más como una banda que quiere tener algo que decir, y hay mucho de qué hablar, sobre sexo, drogas y rock and roll. Para mí es importante reflejar la estupidez que está habiendo en este mundo y me rompe el corazón cuando veo las noticias y solo quiero que todos se pongan de pie y digan: "es suficiente" y si quieres cambios, entonces debes comenzar contigo mismo. No me voy a sentar a mirar. Pero es importante decir que no solo son pensamientos oscuros y negativos. Son canciones sobre no rendirse y mientras haya esperanza...
Cada vez más, estamos viendo como los propios músicos producen sus álbumes y lo hacen con gran resultado. Michael ha producido este nuevo álbum y es espectacular su trabajo. ¿Por qué creéis que está pasando esto? ¿Hay músicos más completos que en años anteriores?
Bueno, eso es lo que ha pasado con todos los cuatro discos y tener a Tommy Hansen haciendo la mezcla ha sido una gran colaboración entre nosotros. Supongo que he hablado de tener a alguien más produciendo o coproduciendo, pero siempre terminamos en esa triste charla sobre el coste y el dinero y esa es quizás la razón por la que esto está pasando, jeje. Por supuesto que desarrollas tus letras cuanto más escribes y cuanto más tiempo vives al lado de tu instrumento. Se vuelve más y más como una unidad. Hay todavía mucha música que tengo que dejar hecha y empiezo a sentir que una vida no es suficiente, jajaja.
Para la portada del álbum seguís con la temática de: universo, naturaleza, galaxia, etc… ¿En qué pensáis o en qué os inspiráis para llegar a estas ideales finales?
Gracias. No estoy seguro, pero creo que tiene que ver con lo que el talentoso André Beckstom inventó en el álbum "Infinite Stargaze" y terminó siendo quizás nuestra marca registrada. Todos los álbumes tienen una portada increíble, pero creo que este último es más que bonita. Se siente como el tipo de portadas que tenemos que hacer coincidir con las canciones y la atmósfera.
Desde “Frozen Paradise” han pasado cuatro años, mucho tiempo para una banda tan activa como Coldspell. ¿Cómo han sido estos cuatro años a nivel personal y para la banda?
Sí, los tiempos están cambiando y estos días 4 años parecen mucho tiempo. Lo sacamos en 2013 y luego tocamos, fuimos de gira y terminamos con diferentes tipos de problemas sobre cómo seguir adelante y qué hacer, ya que es un negocio difícil en estos días. Empecé a grabar canciones y luego tuve mi accidente y eso probablemente demoró el álbum varios meses. A veces la vida se interpone en el camino de rock and roll.
Con vosotros tengo un dilema. Habéis hecho cuatro discos fenomenales, tenéis una calidad increíble, buen directo, buenas reviews, etc… ¿Qué creéis que falta para dar ese paso para entrar dentro del tour por festivales mediáticos en Europa?
Gracias por estas palabras. Para nosotros también es un dilema, y probablemente describa este negocio tan difícil y el hecho de que hay varias bandas que quieren lo mismo que todos los demás. Para nosotros realmente, no lo sé, pero es donde queremos estar. Creo que se trata de la gente que tienes a tu alrededor y de las conexiones que tienes, y sé que solo hay una forma de llegar como banda estos días y es tocar y hacer una gira. Y estoy muy emocionado de finalmente tocar en España y espero que eso nos traiga de vuelta... Espero.
Primera visita a España con Coldspell, ¿cuál es la idea sobre el público español y qué expectativas tenéis en estos conciertos aquí?
Espero que este sea el comienzo de una larga relación entre los rockeros españoles y nosotros. Por lo que escuché, el público en España está muy volcado con las bandas que les gustan y espero que tengamos grandes shows y que todo se deba a la interacción entre la banda y el público. Estamos ahí por las mismas razones: divertirse.
Y por último, para la gente de España y de otros países que vean la entrevista, ¿cómo se define ColdSpell y cómo sois en directo para los que aún no os han visto? Muchas gracias por tu tiempo. ¡Nos vemos en la gira!
ColdSpell tiene que ver con el amor por el hardrock y metal y sin el público y los que nos escuchan no somos nada, así que hay única forma de hacer esto y eso es darlo todo para los que vienen a vernos. Así que preparaos para gritar desde vuestros corazones. ¡Nos vemos España!

First of all, thank you very much for having time to answer the questions and congratulations for this last album so perfect. "A New World Arise" I think it's a mix between the most classic hard rock and melodic metal parts, reaching levels of Whitesanke, Heat or Thunder. It has strong riffs and an atmosphere that surrounds you fast. Very good work. How would you describe your last album and how is it working?
Many thanks, your kind words put a smile on my face. I think what you describe says a lot as I believe it is a mix of different kinds of hardrock and metal that I grew up with. As you say, it’s classic hardrock with metal and some progressive stuff here and there. I think the feedback on the album has been better than I could hope for and you know when released 3 albums before with stunning reviews then you start to think that maybe its over, lol. No really, to be honest I think it’s the album / the songs that do feel like the best so far even though every album tells its own story and when listen to them all then you probably feel the connection between them. It’s ColdSpell.
"Losin 'My Mind" I think it's the song that can summarize the idea of the album, although it is very varied. Aggressive from the beginning to the end of the song and that guitar rhythm several times playing with the progressive. How was the process of creating songs like "Losin 'My Mind"?
Oh that’s interesting and that song was one of those that I thought maybe it’s not a ColdSpell song but when put the songs together it felt like it belong on the album and gives it maybe another dimension. Its not one of those instant radio hit songs but its one of my fav songs. That song and idea have been around for a while and the process is not more complicated than “grab your guitar and play and then the rest will follow”!
In "Love Me Like You Do" there are banjo melodies that provide color to the album with blues. It does not seem that ColdSpell does things without thinking and that's why I think you have many influences from many different genres. How did "Love Me Like You Do" arise and what influences does the group have in general?
Thanks and yes that’s one of the songs that is influenced from the more bluesy kind of hardrock and was the song that I decided in the very last minute to bring along, a classic hardrock song with that southern inspiration and felt like using that Dobro for the intro and verse was spot on. The influences in general is everything from all kinds of rock til more extreme metal and when it comes to me I’m not stuck in a certain genre , its more like: “if its good its good”!
“It Hurts" has become my favorite without a doubt. In love with the melody that transports to the desert and cold streets, besides a great work of Niclas to the voice here as in the whole album. The album released in September, how has the public received the new songs live?
Many thanks. Glad you like that song and do feel like its one of the song you like to have in the live set. Yeah it was in September and with the shows we have done it feels like the new songs work just fine doing live and so far only had positive feedback when playing them live.
In "A New World Arise" you follow as always, transmitting a message with some lyrics that is not the typical message of most of the bands of hard rock or melodic metal currently. You are not interested in talking about whiskey or women. You talk about the world, darkness and hope. How do these letters arise?
At least not interested in doing songs about it, hahaha. Guess were more like a band who want to have something to say and there is a lot to talk about except for sex drugs and R&R. For me it’s important to reflect the on going stupidity in this world and it breaks my heart when watching the news and I just want everyone to stand up and say “this is enough” and if you want changes then you gotta start with yourself. And I’m not just gonna sit and watch. But its just important to say that it’s not only negative dark thoughts, its songs about not giving it up and as long as there’s hope there is...
Increasingly, we are seeing how the musicians themselves produce their albums and do so with great results. Michael has produced this new album and his work is awesome. Why do you think this is happening? Are there more complete musicians than in previous years?
Well that’s what it’s been like with all four albums and having Tommy Hansen doing the mix and it’s been a great collaboration between us. Guess I have talked about having someone else produce or co-produce but always end up in that sad talk about cost´s and money and that’s maybe the reason why this is happening, lol. Of course you develop your songwriting the more you write and the longer you live side by side with your instrument you become more and more like one unit. There is still so much music I have left to be done and start to feel that a lifetime ain’t enough, hahaha.
For the cover of the album you follow the theme of: universe, nature, galaxy, etc ... What do you think or what do you inspire to reach these final ideals?
Thanks. Not sure but think it has to do what the talented André Beckstom came up with on the “Infinite Stargaze” album and it sort of ended up as maybe our trademark. All albums have amazing artwork but this last one is beyond beautiful I think. Feels like the kind of artwork we have match the songs and the atmosphere.
Since "Frozen Paradise" four years have passed, a lot of time for a band as active as ColdSpell. How have these four years been on a personal level and for the band?
Yeah times are changing and these days 4 years seem like a very long time. We released it in 2013 and then played / toured and ended up in different kind of problems how to move forward and what to do as it’s a tough business these days. Started recording songs and then I had my accident and that probably delayed the album a number of months. Sometimes life gets in the way of Rocknroll.
With you I have a dilemma. You have made four phenomenal albums, you have an incredible quality, good live, good reviews, etc ... What do you think happens to not be in the line-up of large festivals in Europe?
Thanks for kind words. It’s a dilemma for us as well and probably describe this tough business and the fact that there is a number of bands out there who wants the same as everyone else and for us I really don’t know cause that’s where we wanna be. I think its all about the people you have around you and the connections you have and I do know that there is only one way to reach out as a band these days and that is to play and tour. And I’m very excited to finally play in Spain and hope that could maybe bring us back …… I hope.
First visit to Spain with ColdSpell, what is the idea about the Spanish public and what expectations do you have in these concerts here?
I hope this will be the start of a long time relation between the Spanish rockers and us. From what I heard the audience in Spain is very devoted to the bands they like and do hope that we will have great shows and its all about interaction between the band and the listeners, were all there for the same reasons – to have fun.
And finally, for the people of Spain and other countries who see the interview, how do you define ColdSpell and how is your show for those who have not yet seen you? Thank you very much for your time. See you on your tour!
