16 Junio en Viana do Castelo, Cave Avenida

¡Exactamente hermano!

First of all, thank you very much for making "Ballads of the Godless". For a lover of stoner music, of rock purer than glamorous, this album brings new air and great musical quality. How does 1968 come about?

Thank you, we worked very hard to get "Ballads of the Godless" right in terms of sound and how the whole record flowed with the listener in mind. 1968 came about after a few line ups back in 2013, it was Jimi and Sam that started, Bear and Dan completed the line up in 2017.

Your work sounds very clean in the production aspect to be your first LP. How was the process of recording the album and how is working with Chris Fielding?

Well, Ballads is a mix of Chris Fielding and Simon Jones, the process began with Fielding for the majority of the first side of the record and then it was finished with Jones. The process changed quite a bit with Jones as we recorded live and with different gear to Fielding. We’ve worked with Fielding for a number of years now, so to have Jones work on it too gave us good results.

"Temple of the Acidwolf" brings us the most original psychedelia as in the first stage of Black Sabbath. 5 minutes of glory to the ears. How did this great song come about?

Well, when the band first started in 2013 we had a song called “Acidwølf” which was also nearly the name of the band before 1968 was agreed. It’s a revisited riff initially that turned into something else, this song was finished around the time that Chris Cornell passed, we used to listen to “Reach Down” by Temple Of The Dog on the way to gigs, so it has that influence too.

Within all the strength and sweat that the album transmits, we have "S.J.D". An acoustic song that serves as a union to get other nuances and continue with "Chemtrail Blues". What does the blues mean to you?

S.J.D.” was added as a tribute to one of our family members that passed away in 2016, this was recorded with another family member on piano as a tribute. The final idea came to mix it with “Chemtrail Blues”. “Chemtrail Blues” was originally a jam that we loved to play at the end of the set, this was eventually recorded live to capture the feel of the jam. That song took 4 hours to set up the rehearsal room for us to play that song 4 times and settle on the final version. We all felt it would add a different dimension to record when played in full.

A few months ago your contract with HeviSike Records was announced. Personally, I think it's perfect for you to be surrounded by names like Astrodome, Tunga Moln, Gorilla or Brunt. What do you hope to achieve within HeviSike Records?

We hope that HeviSike can focus on “Ballads of the Godless” as it is and ensure that the albums integrity is retained in whatever capacity it is released. Back in 2016, we asked HeviSike if they would release our debut album, good things come to those who wait...we guess.

When you start listening to your album "Ballads of the Godless" with "Devilswine" the first thing I think about is bands from California or Palm Desert. This stoner so American, but in your case, British. What are the influences of 1968?

Since the early 90’s, America has pretty much ruled the stoner sound, regardless of whether it was founded byMessrs Ward, Osbourne, Iommi and Butler. The stoner sound is something we’re associated with due to volume and effects but we prefer to add in more classic rock influences like Free, Cream, Hendrix and Zeppelin to name a few. I guess the record has American and British influences by default really.

You come from Cheshire, a town very close to Manchester and Liverpool where the music scene is incredible. Do you breathe that musical atmosphere in Cheshire or the whole musical scene stays in the big cities?

Manchester has been our main base to play for a few years now, that’s mainly due to APF records and Andrew Field, who has been instrumental in our progress within that scene. Chester and Cheshire don’t really have anything to offer us as far as venues. Many bands we’re friends with swap shows with us and allow us the freedom to play nationwide, some of these bands are Battalions, Red Spektor, Elephant Tree, Oak, Wychhound, there are many more.

For a young band like you, the most important thing is to play live. What are the closest plans for 1968? I hope to see you in the next editions of DesertFest or Keep it Low!

Live we play to 5 people in the same way as 400, we like to ensure that there’s an energy for people to grasp when watching us. We also ensure that the whole venue swings with us, which is very important part.

You are on the tour of Spain. How is the connection with the Spanish public and what do you expect from this tour?

We would hope that we have provided great shows for a completely different audience to what we are used to. Bilbao has started that off for us perfectly, audiences here have a much more positive outlook on bands, which is refreshing and a very cool experience.

And finally, for the people of Spain and other countries who see the interview, how do you define 1968 and how is your show for those who have not yet seen you?

Our show is a combination of volume, fuzz and fun. Each show is different which is something we can’t help but as with "Ballads of the Godless", we like to make sure that imperfections can be made beautiful.

Thank you very much for your time. See you on your tour!

Right on brother!
