[Entrevista] STARMEN: "El amor es lo mejor que tenemos en este mundo"

La banda sueca STARMEN acaba de publicar este viernes 12 de marzo su tercer disco "By the Grace of Rock'n'Roll". Desde TNT Radio Rock hemos querido acercarnos a este proyecto de hardrock formado por cuatro músicos experimentados de la escena roquera sueca como son: Andreas Lindgren de Requiem (Guitarra solista, voz- estrella púrpura-), Kristian Hermanson de bandas como Cleopatra, Friends o The Poodles (Voz, guitarra rítmica - estrella roja-), Marcus Sjöblom de Cleopatra o Stolen Mondays (Batería -estrella plateada) y Jonatan Samuelsson de Narnia (bajo,voz –estrella dorada).

Os dejamos lo que nos contaron sobre el grupo y os emplazamos a que leáis el track by track que nos hicieron de "By the Grace of Rock'n'Roll", mañana domingo.

- Primero quería agradeceros vuestro tiempo y felicitaros por vuestro gran trabajo. ¿Cómo estáis viviendo estos días con la pandemia del Covid?

Jonatan: ¡Muchas gracias! Estamos en un modo muy creativo en este momento, así que estamos ocupados grabando nuevas canciones. Pero, por supuesto, sería bueno tocar en vivo y volver a conocer gente.

 - STARMEN comenzó como un homenaje a vuestros héroes de los años 70 y 80. Aparte de KISS, ¿a qué otras bandas queréis honrar?

Kristian: Soy un gran fan de David Coverdale y Whitesnake, pero tengo que decir que Deep Purple, Def Lepppard, Sweet, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy también son mis favoritos.

Andreas: Hay mucho ... Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake ... Podría seguir para siempre. Pero lo bueno de Starmen es que todos tenemos diferentes bandas favoritas pero al mismo tiempo siempre hay algunas en las que todos coincidimos. Nuestras influencias provienen de todo, desde Bach hasta The Beatles, lo cual es genial.

- STARMEN es solo uno más de vuestros proyectos como músicos, pero con las buenas críticas de los dos primeros discos, ¿puede convertirse en vuestra banda principal?

Kristian: ¡Tengo que decir que ésta es mi banda principal! ¿Cómo no puede ser con todas las buenas críticas de todo el mundo? Es muy inspirador recibir estos comentarios, así que solo queremos seguir escribiendo canciones y hacer más álbumes fantásticos.

- Es obvio que tengo que preguntar esto: ¿Por qué usaís una estrella de maquillaje en la cara? ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Cuál es el significado de cada color?

Kristian: Cuando se me ocurrió la idea de formar una banda de rock clásico, quería que fuera algo especial, y me encantan todas las bandas de trucos como Kiss, Sweet, Alice Cooper, etc. ¡¡Así que decidí ir con todo !!! Toda la idea era una banda donde todos los integrantes son iguales, todos escriben, cantan y encima de eso creo que les vamos a dar un color específico, casi como héroes de dibujos animados. Me gustó la idea y ahora aquí estamos !!!

- ¿Habéis pensado en dejar de maquillaros?

Kristian: Algunos días piensas ... Ahha, déjame hacer como todas las otras bandas y usa chaquetas de cuero negro y gafas de sol, pero luego creo que nooooo ... esto es muy divertido, ¡así que sigamos!

- Casi todas las canciones han sido compuestas por Kristian, ¿cómo es el proceso de grabación?

Kristian: Al principio eran canciones de Hermansons, pero la intención siempre ha sido que toda la banda contribuya y ahora que tenemos a Jonatan en la banda, que es un excelente compositor y cantante, ¡nos encaminamos hacia una nueva era! Y Andreas ha escrito canciones en el nuevo álbum. Hasta ahora grabamos todos nuestros álbumes en mi estudio conmigo como productor. Intentamos no sonar a la modernidad ya que nuestros iconos son de los años 70 y 80.

- ¿Cómo trabajáis las canciones para darle ese toque clásico?

Kristian: No pienso mucho, creo que tengo un don para escribir canciones y me resultan muy fáciles y estoy muy orgulloso de nuestro material.

Jonatan: Creo que Kristian tiene un filtro Starmenizer especial que usa. Como Kristian es productor, de alguna manera hace que todas nuestras canciones suenen similares, aunque los estilos musicales pueden variar mucho.

- ¿Es "By the Grace of Rock’n’Roll" vuestro mejor álbum?

Jonatan: Hasta ahora. Creo que estamos progresando en arreglos, producción, escritura, etc., así que tal vez suene mejor, pero creo que es difícil decir que este álbum es mejor que los demás, ¡pero estamos muy orgullosos de él!

- ¿Qué temas le preocupan más a la banda a la hora de escribir la letra?

Kristian: STARMEN escribe sobre el amor que es lo mejor que tenemos en este mundo entre los humanos y algunas canciones sobre lo mal que tratamos a nuestro planeta porque nos parece importante cantar que podemos cambiar el mundo juntos si ponemos un poco de esfuerzo en esto!

- Sé que es difícil elegir una canción pero ¿cuál crees que es la composición que ha os quedado mejor?

Kristian: Creo que cada miembro tiene su propia sugerencia, pero creo que tal vez Shining Star o la canción principal.

Jonatan: Creo que la canción principal "By the Grace of Rock’n’Roll" es sobresaliente en este álbum, ya que todos participamos como vocalistas principales. Sé que una de las ideas básicas de la banda era una banda de cuatro miembros iguales, donde todos participaban en la composición y el canto. Así que eso es algo que hace que esta canción sea especial.

- Habéis grabado tres discos y más de 30 canciones de gran calidad en poco más de un año. ¿Habéis pensado en cuáles tocaréis en directo?

Kristian: Nos formamos como una banda para escribir buena música y no para ser una banda en vivo, pero ahora que a muchos parece gustarles lo que estamos haciendo, tal vez tengamos que considerar hacer una gira y tenemos que sentarnos y elegir canciones y no va a ser un problema,. Creo que tenemos una muy buena idea de qué canciones funcionarán en vivo.

- Vuestro primer álbum "Welcome to My World" apareció en febrero (de 2020). ¿Pudisteis presentarlo en vivo antes del encierro del covid?

Marcus: ¡¡¡No !!!

- ¿Cómo planeáis promocionar "By the Grace of Rock’n’Roll"?

Kristian: Trabajamos con un muy buen distribuidor en Suecia (Sound Pollution) que se encarga de todo de una manera muy profesional.

Jonatan: Tenemos planes de promoción junto con nuestro sello Melodic Passion Records y el distribuidor Sound Pollution, y además usamos nuestras propias redes para promocionar el álbum.

- ¿Pensáis hacer algunos conciertos, incluso con las nuevas medidas sanitarias?

Kristian: Creemos que Corona durará mucho tiempo, así que escribimos canciones y hacemos álbumes y videos por el momento. Cuando llegue el día en que se acabe la corona, ¡¡¡Trabajaremos en un programa con la mente puesta en «Todo incluido» !!!

- Veo que "By The Grace of Rock’n’Roll" se lanzo primero en Japón y que incluso allí incluye la canción extra "Ghosts". ¿Qué opinas del público japonés? ¿Siguen siendo tan fanáticos como en los años 70 y 80? ¿Cómo os han acogido?

Jonatan: Sí, cuando nos enteramos del lanzamiento a través de Marquee Avalon en Japón, y que querían un bonus track, nos pusimos manos a la obra. De hecho, teníamos dos bonus tracks en el CD original, pero necesitábamos otro para esta versión. Entonces Andreas y yo nos juntamos y escribimos "Ghosts" juntos. La canción se armó en solo unos días y pudimos enviarla a Japón justo antes de la fecha límite. Esa canción realmente tiene una vibra de los 80, ¡así que esperamos que todavía les guste ese tipo de rock!

Marcus: ¡Hemos sido muy apreciados en Japón, lo cual se siente emocionante! Hicimos una gran entrevista para la revista Burrn hace unos días y ¡realmente esperamos poder ser "Big in Japan"!

- Sois un país con una calidad brutal de vuestros músicos. ¿Cómo veis la escena del metal en Suecia?

Kristian: Como dices, tenemos muchas bandas realmente buenas de Suecia, lo cual es un poco extraño ya que somos un país pequeño. Pero tenemos una historia de hacer buena música en los oídos de personas como ABBA, Roxette, Robyn, Europe y muchos más.

- Y finalmente, ¿podremos veros en España cuando termine la pandemia?

Kristian: ¡Ojalá algún día esta Corona sea historia y todo vuelva a la normalidad y podamos venir a España! ¡Nos encantaría eso!

- First I wanted to thank you for your time And congratulate you on your great work. How are these days with the covid pandemic?

Jonatan: Thank you so much! We are in a very creative mode right now, so we are busy recording new songs. But of course it would be nice to play live and to meet people again.

- STARMEN began as a tribute to your heroes from the 70s and 80s. Apart from KISS, what other bands do you want to honor?

Kristian: I’m a huge fan of David Coverdale and Whitesnake but I have to say, Deep purple, Def Lepppard, Sweet, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy also are favorites of mine!

Andreas: There's alot... Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake...I could go on forever. But the great thing with Starmen is that We all have different favourite bands but at the same time some acts that We all keep up there. Our influences comes from everything between Bach to The Beatles, wich is great.

- STARMEN is just one more of your projects as musicians, but with the good reviews of your first two albums, can it become your main band?

Kristian: I have to say that this is my mainband! How can it not be with all good reviews from all over the world. Its so inspiring to get this feedback so we just want to continuing writing songs and make more fantastic albums.

- It’s obvious that I have to ask this: Why do you wear a makeup-star on your face? How did the idea come about? What’s the meaning of each color?

Kristian: When I got the idea to put a classic rock band together I wanted it to be something special, and I love all the gimmick-bands like Kiss, Sweet, Alice Cooper etc. So i decided to go all in !!! The whole Idea was a band where all the members are equal, everybody writes, sing and on top of that I thougt lets givet hem all a specific color, almost like cartoon heros. I liked the Idea and now here we are!!!

- Have you thought to stop putting on makeup?

Kristian: Some days you think….Ahha let do like all the other bands and wear black leather jackets and sunshades but then I think nooooo…..this is great fun so lets stick to it !

- Almost all the songs have been composed by Kristian, how is the recording process?

Kristian: In the beginning it was very much Hermansons songs but the intension has always been that the whole band should contribute and now that we got Jonatan in the band who is an exellent songwritter and singer we are headin for a new era ! And Andreas has written songs on the new album. We record so far all our albums in my studio with me as a producer. We try not to sound to modern since our icons are fom the 70´s and the 80´.

- How do you work the songs to give it that classic touch?

Kristian: I do not think to much, I think I have a gift to write songs and they come very easy to me and Im damn proud of our material.

Jonatan: I think Kristian has a special Starmenizer-filter that he uses. 😉 Since Kristian is producer, he somehow makes all our songs sound similar, even though the musical styles may vary a lot.

- Is “By the Grace of Rock’n’Roll” your best album?

Jonatan: So far. I think we making progress in arrangments, producing, writing and so on so it maybe sounds the best but I think its hard to say that this album is better then the others but we are very proud of it!

- What issues are the band's most concerned about when writing the lyrics?

Kristian: STARMEN writes about love wich is the best thing we have in this world between humans and some songs about how bad we treat our planet cause we find it important to sing about, that we can change the world together if we put a little effort in it !

- I know it is difficult to choose a song but what do you think is the composition that has been the most rounded on the album?

Kristian: I think each member have his own suggestion but I think maybe Shining star or the titletrack?

Jonatan: I think the title track ”By the Grace of Rock’n’Roll” is outstanding on this album, since we all participate as lead vocalists. I know one of the basic ideas for the band was a band of four equal members, where all are involved in songwriting and singing. So that is something that makes this song to a special one.

- You have recorded three albums and more than 30 songs of high quality in just over a year. Have you thought which ones you will play live?

Kristian: We where formed as a band to write good music and not to be a live band but now that so many seem to fancy what we are doing we maybe have to consider touring and we have to sit down and choose songs and its not gonna be a problem, I think we have a pritty good Idea of which songs that will work live.

- Your first album “Welcome to My World” appeared in February (2020). Could you present it live before the confinement by the covid?

Marcus : No !!!

- How do you plan to promote “By the Grace of Rock’n’Roll”?

Kristian: We work with a very good distributor in sweden (Sound Pollution) who takes care of everything in a very professional way

Jonatan: We have promotion-plans together with our label Melodic Passion Records, and distributor Sound Pollution, and beside that we use our own networks to promote the album.

- Do you plan to do a concert even with the new sanitary measures?

Kristian : We believe Corona will last a long time so we write songs and do albums and videos for the moment. When the day comes when corona is gone we will work on a show with our minds set on «All in » !!!

- I see that “By The Grace of Rock’n’Roll” is released first in Japan and that even there it includes the bonus song "Ghosts". What do you think of the Japanese public? Are they still as much of a fan as in the 70s and 80s? How have they welcomed you?

Jonatan: Yes, when we got the news about the release via Marquee Avalon in Japan, and that they wanted a bonus track, we got busy. We actually had two bonus tracks on the original CD, but we needed another one for this version. So Andreas and I got together and wrote ”Ghosts” together. The song got together in just a few days, and we were able to send it to Japan just before deadline. That song really has a 80s vibe to it, so we hope they still like that kind of rock!

Marcus: We have been very apreciated in Japan which feels exiting! We did an big interview for Burrn magazine some days ago and we really hope we can get ”Big in Japan”!

- You are a country with a brutal quality of your musicians. How do you see the metal scene in Sweden?

Kristian: We have as you say a lot of really good bands from sweden which is kind of odd since we are a small country. But we have an history of making good music in peoples ears like ABBA, Roxette, Robyn, Europé and many more.

- And finally, can we see you in Spain when the pandemic ends?

Kristian: Someday hopefully this Corona will be history and everything will get back to normal and we can come to Spain! We would love that!
