Nico Chona

(English below...)

Me encanta “Run”.

¿Qué puedes decirnos de “Again and Again”?

¡Me encanta!

Ahora llegáis a España con muchas fechas y shows. ¿Qué podemos esperar de Nico Chona & The Freshtones?

¡te gustará Nico Chona & The Freshtones!

Muchas gracias Nico por tu tiempo y por vuestro gran álbum. Nos veremos en los shows.

¡Gracias!

First of all, thank you very much for coming to Spain and thank you for having time for TNT Radio Rock. I would like to congratulate you for the debut album because you can hear quality, love and a lot of good music in your influences. It's a great album! But we started at the beginning, how is the band born?

Thank you so much ! I formed the band 2 years ago, I had some songs that I did at home, my friends told that I had to play those songs with a band on stage. So one day I've decided to call my Old pals Joris Perrin (guitar), Dan Nambotin (Bass) and Nicolas Gamet (Drums), to play those songs, and Nico Chona and the Freshtones was born!

Listening to this first album, it is inevitable to think about rock and roll, rockabilly, blues... Nico, what influences do you have and how did these bands come to your life?

My influences comes from my father essentialy. He is a guitar player, he was a professionnal musicians during the late 60' and 70' , and he has a massive collection of records. So I listen and learn this music since I'm a young kid. Blues, American music, british blues, Rock, Folk, etc.. Things like the early years of ZZTop, The Allman Brothers, Crosby stills nash and young , etc...

More and more, there are more new bands that you claim to return to the decade of the '60s and' 70s. I was recently talking about it with The Picturebooks and they told me that you have to be honest with what you feel playing. How do you decide to start this project and with an underground music style?

I haven't decided to start this band with the idea of making a vintage music because it's fashion... I do it because it's my music, since I am a kid.

Starting to talk about the album, I repeat, it's a very good first work. It sounds very good, good production. I like how the guitar sounds in many parts of the album to that country sound. Above all, in "Hello". I seem to hear again the last, and great, Black Stone Cherry album. Your album and theirs are very similar in sound. How has the recording process been?

Thanks! We have recorded this album live. Everything is live, vocals, guitars, guitar solo.. etc. As we play these songs on stage. Exactly in the same way, aith the same guitars and amplifiers, same sound, our sound.

I love "Run." Adrenaline for the body. The intensity grows until your guitar solo that could be extended 10 minutes without problem. This song was born for the live show. How does "Run" come about?

I've composed this song a long time ago. I've started playing this song acoustic in bars and pubs and then it naturally came electric with the band.

In "Again and Again", you start with an intro in which you are tuning several pieces of songs on the radio. I guess they are influences and a tribute. After the intro, we have a ballad that immediately reminded me of Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton. What can you tell us about "Again and Again"?

Thanks, Eric Clapton, especially in Cream, is one of my biggest influence. For “Again and again” , It's not really a tribute, but just a guitar riff I made on the acoustic guitar and which evolve and evolve again then to being the complete song. I added the lyrics after, found the melody and the words, recorded a demo at home, and then we started playing it live. After one year playing this song on stage, Joris Perrin found this psyche slide guitar melody he does at the end of the song with the slide. I love it!

You do a version of "Rollin 'and Thumblin'" and I thank you. You reminded me of the last time I heard it on a show and it was wonderful. It was at the Royal Albert Hall in London with Imelda May. Ronnie Wood and Bob Geldof. This song gives you power and makes you euphoric. It's like good wine, when the song is older, it will be better. Why is this cover?

It's one of my favorite song of all time. I'm a huge fan of Robert Johnson and to me, he did the best version. The other version I like is the one Jeff Beck playing in one of his latest album.

The album came out a few months ago, before Christmas, what are the first feelings you have? How about the reaction in the shows, press, audience...?

People, press and radios in europe and canade really love it. For the moment, the reactions are pretty good!

In France, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland ... Many bands bet on blues rock, classic rock, but it is impossible that some of these bands are headliners in a massive festival. Why do you think that these genres are not yet as successful as they deserve? Have we forgotten the true rock and roll?

I don't think rock n roll is dead.. I think the situation is actually like this because all the big festivals in the world are now under the control of big companies / sponsors who decide which band or artist is the best to make money... They don't really think about the music. But today you also have the choice to go to the concerts in the clubs or little venues and see very good bands, very talented artist... This is rock'n'roll... Support the real music!

Nico Chona & The Freshtones come with a lot of power, illusion and a great debut album in which, we can guess that live will be very wild. Now you arrive in Spain with many dates and shows. What can we expect from Nico Chona & The Freshtones?

A lot of energy on stage, lot of blues, guitars, a really cool and funny ambiance.. If you like american music, folk music, blues music, beer, cars... you will like Nico Chona and the Freshtones!

Thank you very much Nico for your time and for your great album. We'll see each other at the shows!

Thanks!!
