Entrevista a JANET GARDNER sobre "Your Place in the Sun"

Como ex vocalista de la legendaria banda de rock femenino Vixen, las poderosa voz de Janet Gardner impulsó a Vixen a la cima de las listas de Billboard con éxitos como "Edge of a Broken Heart" y "Cryin‘" Gardner se asoció con el guitarrista, compositor y productor Justin James, y además se aventuró en el reino de los solos para desatar un nuevo lado de su creatividad musical.

El poderoso dúo firmó un acuerdo con Pavement Entertainment a principios de 2017. El 18 de agosto de 2017, Janet lanzó su álbum solista de debut en todo el mundo. El álbum fue bien recibido por fans y críticos por igual. Janet y Justin viajaron mucho por Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido. Ahora, el dúo está de vuelta con su segundo álbum en solitario, "Your Place In The Sun", que saldrá a nivel mundial el 31 de mayo. Este nuevo lanzamiento, un perfecto seguimiento del debut homónimo, combina elementos del rock moderno con el sonido clásico por el que Janet se ha hecho conocida en sus décadas de furia femenina e influyente. Ella también continúa empujando los límites y pisando nuevas aguas.

En TNT Radio Rock hemos tenido la ocasión de preguntar a Janet sobre éste nuevo trabajo.

En primer lugar, gracias por la entrevista y felicitaciones por el nuevo álbum.

Vuestro nuevo álbum "Your Place In The Sun" saldrá el 31 de mayo a través de Pavement Music. Supongo que ha sido un trabajo muy reflexivo y elaborado. ¿Estás contento con el resultado?

Estamos muy entusiasmados con este álbum y sentimos que hemos hecho algunas mejoras con respecto al último álbum y eso es lo más importante para nosotros, crecer como artistas. Siempre hay cosas que desearías haber hecho de manera diferente, pero eso es parte de aprender y crecer.

El álbum consta de doce grandes canciones, por lo que se muestra en la primera canción con el mismo nombre. Cuéntanos qué vamos a encontrar en el nuevo proyecto.

¡Gracias Ester! La música de este lanzamiento te llevará en un viaje musical. Un poco rápido y optimista, mientras que otras canciones están llenas de emoción y alma.

Con la colaboración del guitarrista, compositor y productor Justin James. ¿Cómo ha sido el trabajar con él para el desarrollo del segundo álbum?

Justin es el compañero ideal para componer en mi caso. Tenemos una gran química y de trabajo, así como nuestros vínculos personales obvios. Ambos sentimos realmente que podemos ser nosotros mismos sin que los egos o la pretensión se interpongan en el camino. Ambos nos esforzamos por entender y mejorar la visión de cada uno y ninguno de nosotros tiene ningún problema para asumir el rol de apoyo cuando uno de nosotros está en algo realmente excelente.

¿Alguna canción que te gustaría resaltar las demás?

Eso es realmente difícil porque estamos muy orgullosos de todas las canción de este trabajo, pero si tenemos que resaltar una en este momento, me gustaría hablar de "Your Place in the Sun". Tiene algo para cualquier persona. Letras muy significativas, melodías de voz pegadizas y guitarras que te transportan.

Como mencioné antes, este será tu segundo disco. ¿Cuáles son las diferencias entre "Janet Gardner" y "Your Place In The Sun"?

Como dije antes, creo que hicimos algunas mejoras en este álbum. Creo que es mucho mejor, más limpio, más potente y, sin embargo, un poco más orgánico. Justin investigó un poco sobre el aspecto más técnico de las cosas. Eso, combinado con lo que aprendimos al hacer el último álbum, lo ha llevado a un nivel superior. También le dimos un poco más de enfoque de narrador lírico en este álbum que realmente no lo hicimos en el primer álbum.

¿Cómo ha apoyado el sello de Pavement Music tu nuevo trabajo?

Pavement han sido de verdad muy buenos para nosotros y se ha convertido en una familia también. Creen en nosotros de verdad y nos sentimos muy afortunados de haberles encontrado. Ofrecen orientación cuando es necesario, pero nos permiten ser nosotros mismos a la vez.

Cuéntanos un poco más sobre el futuro de Janet Gardner y tus conciertos. Nos encantaría verte en España con el nuevo trabajo. ¿Algún concierto que tengas en mente?

¡Nos encantaría venir a España! Esperemos que podamos preparar algo para estar allí muy pronto. En nuestro estado actual, planeamos salir a la carretera este verano y otoño para promocionar el nuevo trabajo. Nos lo pasamos genial en el escenario tocando estas canciones. Es enérgico, loco, y lo más importante, ¡es que es divertido!

Un tema del que nos gusta hablar: los diseños de discos. Creo que es un diseño simple, pero enfatiza lo que es importante. ¿Cómo fue la idea y la elaboración de ésta?

En realidad era bastante simple. Queríamos hacer algo que te llamara la atención, pero no era una locura que te distrajera demasiado. Los ojos son las ventanas al alma.

Considero que eres un ícono femenino de empoderamiento para las mujeres en el rock. ¿Qué consejo le darías a las mujeres que te toman como referencia e inspiración para abrirse paso en el rock?

Gracias Ester! Realmente creo que necesitas seguir tu corazón y ser tú misma. Las personas intentarán socavar su confianza porque muchas personas se sienten incómodas con las mujeres fuertes. Trabaja duro. ¡Ponte ahí fuera! No te rindas.

En relación a la pregunta anterior, ¿cuáles serían las referencias femeninas que te han inspirado? Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson.

First of all, thank you for the interview and congratulations for the new album.

Thank you Ester and we're happy to answer your questions!

Your new album "Your Place In The Sun" will be released on May 31 through Pavement Music. I guess it has been a very thoughtful and elaborate work. Are you happy wih the result?

We're very excited about this album and we feel like we've made some improvements over the last album and that's what's most important to us...to grow as artists. There are always things that you wish you had done differently but that's all part of learning and growing.

The album comprises twelve great tracks, so it shows in the first song with the same name. Tell us what we are going to find in the new project.

Thanks Ester! The music on this release will take you on a musical journey. Some fast and upbeat while other songs are bursting with emotion and soul.

With the collaboration of guitarist, composer and producer Justin James. How has it been working with him for the development of the second album?

Justin is the ideal writing partner for me. We have a great chemistry and working relationship as well as our obvious personal ties. We both really feel like we can be ourselves without egos or pretense getting in the way. We both strive to understand and enhance each other's vision and neither of us have any problem taking the support role when one of us is onto something great!

Any track you'd like highlight the others?

That's really tough because we are so proud of every track on this release but if we have to highlight one right now I would like to talk about Your Place in the Sun. It has something for everyone in it. Meaningful lyrics, catchy vocal melodies, and driving guitars.

As I mentioned before, this will be your second disc. What are the differences between "Janet Gardner" and "Your Place In The Sun"?

Like I said before, I think we made some improvements on this album. I think it's sonically much better, cleaner and more powerful and yet a bit more organic. Justin did quite a bit of research on the technical side of things. That combined with what we learned making the last album took this one up a notch. We also took a bit more of a "storyteller " approach lyrically on this album which we really didn't do on the first album.

How has the Pavement Music label supported your new work?

Pavement has been really great for us and has become like family to us. They really believe in us and we feel very lucky to have found them. They offer guidance when needed but allow us to be ourselves.

Tell us a little bit more about Janet Gardner's future and your concerts. We would love to see you in Spain with the new work. Any concert that you have in mind?

We would love to come to Spain! Hopefully we can set something up to bring us over there really soon. In our current state we plan on hitting the road hard this summer and fall to support the new release. We just have such a great time on stage playing these songs. It's energetic, crazy, and most importantly it's fun!

A subject we like to talk about -- the record designs. I think its simple design, but it emphasizes what's important. How was the idea and the elaboration of this one?

It was actually quite simple. We wanted to do something that catches your attention but that wasn't to crazy that it distracted you with to much going on. The eyes are the windows to the soul...

I consider you to be a female icon of empowerment for women in rock. What advice would you give to women who take you as a reference and inspiration to make their way into rock?

Thanks Ester! I really believe that you need to follow your heart and be yourself. People will try to undermine your confidence because many people are uncomfortable with strong women. Work hard. Put yourself out there! Don't give up.

In relation to the previous question, what would be the female references that have inspired you? Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson.
