Entrevista a HEAVY FEATHER antes de venir a España

El cuarteto sueco estará en España de la mano de Lestrato. Los caminos se juntan y toda la unión huele a puro hard rock, rock and roll del que se respira originalidad y con influencias desde Cream hasta los mismísimos Lynyrd Skynyrd. Heavy Feather dan la vuelta a la tuerca para adentrarse en las raíces del género dentro de su primer álbum de estudio, “Débris & Rubble” que respira calidad por todos lados.

En TNT Radio Rock hemos tenido la oportunidad de acercarnos a preguntar a esta banda que promete demasiado en un futuro cercano dentro de la ola de bandas suecas. (English below)

Me gustaría daros las gracias por vuestro primer álbum y por el tiempo para respondernos. Personalmente, os doy las gracias por mantener la esencia de la música que hubo en aquellos magníficos años ’60 y ’70.

 “Débris & Rubble” salió hace dos semanas y creo que es un álbum muy bueno para que podáis tener un inicio de carrera bastante prometedor. Se puede escuchar calidad y un gran respeto por muchas influencias de bandas importantes de rock hace 50 años. Os deseo un gran futuro. ¿Cómo está siendo el feedback de “Débris & Rubble”?

Morgan Korsmoe: Estamos muy orgullosos del álbum. La respuesta de los críticos y los fans ha sido abrumadora. Creo que tú, como oyente, puedes realmente escuchar el amor por la música que compartimos juntos en esta banda. Nos lo pasamos muy bien juntos escribiendo las canciones, viajando y tocando.

Como siempre para una banda que empieza su trayectoria, nos gusta saber sus inicios. Podemos ver que tanto Lisa como Matte han coincidido en Lisa Lystam Family Band anteriormente. ¿Cómo fue el nacimiento de Heavy Feather?

Morgan Korsmoe: La banda comenzó cuando yo, Lisa y Matte hablamos sobre nuestro sueño en común para comenzar una banda de rock con influencias de bandas como Lynyrd Skynyrd, Free y Cream. Sabía que Ola tocaba en otra banda y le pedimos que se uniera. Luego empezamos a tocar juntos y fue muy agradable desde el principio. Nació Heavy Feather.

Habéis llamado “Débris & Rubble” al álbum. Además, es la canción de apertura. Es como el tráiler de la película donde podemos hacernos la idea de qué habrá en el disco. Esa armónica junto con el riff de guitarra da un toque blues y country muy interesante. ¿Por qué “Débris & Rubble” da el nombre al disco? ¿Qué queréis expresar?

Morgan Korsmoe: El título del álbum vino de un amigo nuestro. Y cuando llegó el momento de nombrar el álbum, se sintió perfecto con ese título. Queríamos crear una introducción para el álbum que atrapara al oyente desde el principio.

En “Hey There Mama” tenemos de las canciones más rockeras del álbum. Además, el trabajo aquí de Matte a la guitarra es esencial. ¿Qué nos podéis contar de esta increíble canción?

Matte Gustafsson: ¡Gracias! En realidad, una de mis favoritas del álbum. Fue compuesta de forma bastante espontánea tanto en la música como en la letra. Nuestro ingeniero de sonido, Erik Pettersson, hizo un gran trabajo con el sonido de la guitarra al final. Me encanta...

“Please Don’t Leave” es una maravilla psicodélica. Me encanta desde la primera vez que la escuché. La voz de Lisa como si estuviera bajo del mar o detrás de un cristal le da una atmósfera perfecta a la segunda parte de la canción. Enhorabuena porque es un magnífico trabajo. Además, creo que Cream y la primera etapa de Clapton se puede llegar a apreciar en esta primera parte de la canción. Me gustaría saber más de esta canción y cómo salió la idea de darle el toque final.

Matte Gustafsson: Ésta también fue compuesta espontáneamente, de lo que recuerdo. Tuvimos una temporada de composición de canciones en una casa en el bosque del archipiélago sueco, donde se escribieron esta y al menos 6 canciones más. Erik hizo un gran trabajo en ésta también. Fue su idea agregar esta parte 6/8 al final. También grabamos esa guitarra final y funcionó muy bien. Es muy divertido de tocar en directo, ¡no sabes lo que pasará!

Tenemos en el álbum canciones como “Where Did We Go”, “I Spend my Money Wrong”, “Please Don’t Leave” o “Dreams”. Parecen ser situaciones personales y muy íntimas. ¿De qué nos hablan vuestras letras?

Lisa Lystam: Es a la vez profundo y simple. Por ejemplo, "Where Did We Go", la escribí sobre un viejo amigo al que ya no veo mucho. "Dreams" es sobre mi vecino que se queja de cualquier cosa. Así que esa canción es como mi venganza. "I Spend My Money Wrong" es sobre un chico rico con mucho dinero, pero le falta el amor de su familia. Trabajé antes con niños en una parte muy rica de Estocolmo, así surgió esa idea. "Please Don’t Leave" se trata de una relación muy destructiva y sensual que no funciona en absoluto. Así que algunas de las letras están compuestas y otras son de mis propias experiencias.

En la portada del álbum salís del agua como si dijerais: “¡Aquí estamos!”. ¿De quién fue la idea y cómo se hizo?

Ola Göransson: Durante la grabación del video de “Where Did We Go”, fue en una pausa y LoEmma Nilsson, la directora del video, hizo algunas fotos para pasárnoslo bien. Más tarde encontramos estas fotos y una de ellas era sobresaliente, así que la hicimos de portada. Un disparo desde la cadera, resultó ser puro oro.

En los últimos años hay mucha más actividad alrededor de las bandas que están muy influenciadas por los años ´60 y ´70. Tenemos a Blues Pills, Pristine, Black Mirrors y muchas más. Curiosamente, la mayoría tenéis cantantes femeninas, lo cual me encanta. ¿Cómo veis esta nueva ola de bandas?

Lisa Lystam: ¡Personalmente me encanta! Tenemos algunas bandas muy grandes en Suecia. Algunos que han sido parte de esta escena durante mucho tiempo y otros que son nuevas. Las bandas anteriores a nosotros nos ayudaron a crear una buena reputación acerca de las bandas suecas y por eso estamos agradecidos. Es bueno ver que la escena del rock sigue viva y que nuevas bandas están saliendo todo el tiempo.

Para los que nos encanta el rock clásico y hemos crecido escuchando bandas como The Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blind Faith y demás maravillas musicales, nos alegramos de que surjan bandas como la vuestra. Personalmente, me gustaría saber qué bandas hay por Suecia similares a la vuestra.

Ola Göransson: Todos tenemos nuestro propio sonido. Por nombrar algunas: Siena Root, Kamchatka, Blues Pills, Graveyard, Spiders y Horisont.

Ahora estaréis en España para hacer un gran tour con 10 shows por todo el páis. ¿Qué esperáis de vuestra visita a nuestro país?

Matte Gustafsson: Todos hemos estado de gira en España y a todos nos encanta. ¡Gente maravillosa y buena comida! ¡Esperamos con ansias el queso manchego y el vino tinto!

Y la última es para vosotros, ¿qué queréis decir a todas las personas que os lean en la entrevista y aún no os conozcan?

Ola Göransson: La improvisación hace que cada concierto sea diferente. Estamos muy emocionados de conocer a todos los fans nuevos. Que vengan a saludarnos al merchandising después del concierto y nos conózcanos mejor.

I would like to thank you for your first album and for the time to answer us. Personally, I thank you for keeping the essence of the music that was in those magnificent years '60 and '70.

"Débris & Rubble" came out two weeks ago and I think it's a very good album and I think you can have a very promising beginning as a band. In this album you can hear quality and a great respect for many influences of important rock bands 50 years ago. I wish you a great future. How is the "Débris & Rubble" feedback?

Morgan Korsmoe: We are very proud of the album and the response from both critics and fans have been overwhelming. I think you as a listener can really hear the love for music that we share together in this band. We have fun together writing the songs, travelling and playing.

As always for a band that begins its musical life, we like to know its beginnings. We can see that Lisa as Matte were in Lisa Lystam Family Band before. How was the beginning of Heavy Feather?

Morgan Korsmoe: The band started when me, Lisa and matte talked about our common Dream to start a rock band with influences from bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, free and cream. I knew Ola from playing together in another band and we asked him to join and then we started to jam together and it was so Nice from The start. Heavy Feather was born.

You have called "Débris & Rubble" to the album. Also, it's the opening song. It's like the trailer of the movie where we can get the idea of what's on the record. That harmonica along with the guitar riff gives a very interesting blues and country touch. Why "Débris & Rubble" gives the name to the album? What do you want to say with it?

Morgan Korsmoe: The album title came from a friend of ours. And when it was time to name The album it just felt perfect with that title. We wanted to create an intro for The album that catch The listener from The start.

In "Hey There Mama" we have one of the most rock songs on the album. In addition, Matte's work here on guitar is essential. What can you tell us about this incredible song?

Matte Gustafsson: Thank you! Actually one of my favourite on the album. It was written quite spontaneously both the music and the lyrics. Our sound engineer Erik Pettersson did a great job with the guitar sound in the end. I love it...

"Please Don’t Leave" is a psychedelic wonder. I love it from the first time I heard it. Lisa's voice as if under the sea or behind a glass gives a perfect atmosphere to the second part of the song. Congratulations because it's a great job. Also, I think that Cream and the first phase of Eric Clapton can be appreciated in this first part of the song. I would like to know more about this song and how the idea came out to give it the final touch.

Matte Gustafsson: This one is also written spontaneously what I remember. We had a song writing session in a house out in the woods in the Swedish archipelago, where this one and at least 6 more song were written. Erik did a great job on this one too. It was his idea to add this 6/8 part in the end. We also recorded this rewinded guitar and it worked out really well. It's very fun to play this live, you don't know what will happen!

We have songs on the album like "Where Did We Go", "I Spend my Money Wrong", "Please Don’t Leave" or "Dreams". They seem to be personal and very intimate situations. What do your lyrics tell us?

Lisa Lystam: It is both kind of deep and simple. For example ”Where did we go”, I wrote about an old friend that I’m not seeing that much anymore. ”Dreams” is about my creepy neighbour that are complaining about anything. So that song is like my revenge. ”I spend my money wrong” is about a rich boy with a lot of money but he his missing the love from his family. I worked before with children in a very wealthy part of Stockholm, that is how that idea came up. ”Please don’t leave” is about a very destructive and sensual relationship that doesn’t work at all. So some of the lyrics is made up and some is from my own experiences.

On the cover of the album you come out of the water as if to say: "Here we are!". Whose idea was it and how was it made?

Ola Göransson: During the music video recording of “Where did we go” it was a wrap and LoEmma Nilsson the video director, shot some pictures just for fun. Later we found these photos and one of them was outstanding, so we made to the cover. A shoot from the hip, turned out to be gold.

In recent years there is much more activity around bands that are influenced by the '60s and' 70s. We have Blues Pills, Pristine, Black Mirrors and many more. Interestingly, most of you have female singers, which I love. How do you see this new wave of bands?

Lisa Lystam: I personally love it! We got some great bands from Sweden. Some that’s been a part of this scene for a long time and some that are new. The bands before us helped us create a good reputation about Swedish bands and for that we are grateful. Its nice to see that the rock scene is still alive and that new bands are coming up all the time.

For those of us who love classic rock and have grown up listening to bands like The Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blind Faith and other musical wonders, we are glad that bands like yours come up. Personally, I would like to know what bands are in Sweden similar to yours.

Ola Göransson: We all got our own sound but to name a few:  Siena Root, Kamchatka, Blues Pills, Graveyard, Spiders and Horisont.

Now you will be in Spain to do a great tour with 10 shows throughout the country. What do you expect from your visit to our country?

Matte Gustafsson: We all have been touring in Spain before with other constellations and we all love it! Wonderful people and good food! Looking forward to Manchego cheese and red wine!

And the last one is for you, what do you want to say to all the people who read you in the interview and still do not know you?

Ola Göransson: Improvisation makes every nights concert different. We’re very excited to meet all new fans, come say hi at the merchandise table after the gig and get to know us better.
