20 mayo – Barcelona, Rocksound
21 mayo – Ciudad Real, Sala Nana
22 mayo – Sevilla, Sala X
23 mayo – Madrid, The Copernico Cavern
24 mayo – Cangas do Morrazo, Salason
25 mayo – Ferrol, Sala Super 8

¡Hola, TNT Radio Rock!.

¡Y no solo!

Thank you very much for having a moment to respond to TNT Radio Rock and for being in our country for a few days. Even though you've been a decade like Dätcha Mandala, I'd like to start at the beginning, how does the band start?

Hello TNT radio rock, first of all thank you for having/inviting us in your media !
Well we meet each other during school times, when we were twelve (JB and Nico) and at fifteen with Jeremy, we had several bands with different line up, before we started to play just the three of us. In 2009 the name Dätcha Mandala came out, we found what kind of music we enjoyed to play, and we never stopped till that time, playing a maximum shows, and rehearse the more often we could !

You come to Spain with "Rokh". Seeing the cover of the album, I think it's the reference to the Persian mythological bird, right? What did you want to express with the name "Rokh"?

Absolutely right. First there is an obvious game word with the kind of music we're playing, and we found out the story of ROKH, while Markel (our illustrator) was already drawing a bird for the cover... We loved the meaning and the healing power that ROKH is supposed to have, and it fitted perfectly with the Persian myths, our love for Oriental cultures, markel's drawing ...
That's all about this

Your influences are classic rock, the 60s and 70s... Also, on the cover of "Rokh", as the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Beatles, you make reference to Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jeff Buckley, Gandhi, an alien, death... Is it a kind of summary of your philosophy as a band?

(Jim Morrison ?.. it must be our booker (Jimmy) who can remind you also a bit of Jesus maybe but there's no Jim Morrison on the cover, not because The Doors didn't influence us, it would be wrong to say that, but because we had to make choices and unfortunately there wasn't enough room for everyone on this cover !)
Yes it's a bit of a summary of our first influences, musical ones but also spiritual, philosophical and poetical ones... And not only ! Because you can find our parents, and our close team and friends who played and bring us strengh and affection during all the process of the creation of this album.

Speaking of what "Rokh" was, we have "Da Blues", which is my favorite without a doubt. A great work of Nicolas to the voice, Jean going crazy with drums and Jérémy giving a masterclass of influences such as Page or Hendrix. How important is Blues to you?

Thank you ! Blues is the main root of Rock music, every bands we listened to were deeply influenced by the blues. If there wasn’t this root, we wouldn’t probably play our music, so it’s kind of our indirect craddle !

"Uncommon Travel" I think it is the most crazy song and in turn, more representative of "Rokh". It's an adrenaline shot. How did it come about?

This is a funny one ! We were sound-tchecking for a gig in Paris, and Jeremy found the main guitar Riff, we jammed on it, and when we came back home, we finished it. But the main thing is that it was a time when we didn't played concerts as much as we wanted, and it was really bothering us, the rage of not being on tour more often !

You say that you have played approximately 500 gigs. I suppose many anecdotes have happened to you, even to write a book! What is the weirdest moment, the funniest and the worst that you have had?

One of the weirdest show was in Slovenia, Maribor. We were playing in a former house of a signalman on the outskirts of the town, all the windows were broken and fixed with cardboard, it was winter of course. So we played, and when we came back to do an after show, we arrived in a big venue with a dozen of persons inside, and amongst them some drunk skinhead playing with a taser. We left the place after a couple a shots of weird potato liquor.

The worst was in Solesme, France, we were on our way home after a tour in Germany, and we arrived at that bar with a get-in at 4p.m. The place opened at 6p.m, very very bad food, like sandwiches with either ham or cheese, 10 persons came, all were very drunk, nobody paid the entrance, and we rented to many rooms a the hotel, so at the end of the day we spent 200€ to play this show.

One funny thing that happened on tour was that night when a guy came talk with us after the show to buy one of the carpets we use as decor on stage. He was really drunk and definitely wanted to bring this carpet back home, so we sold it !

For the cover you have worked with Mikel Urrutia. I'm a big fan of Mikel and he does an awesome job. My Sleeping Karma, Extremoduro, Belako, ZZ Top, Red Fang ... How did the idea of collaborating with Mikel and Smoke Signals Studio come about?

Markel was already working with Mars Red Sky, and Jimmy, who is the bass player of Mars Red sky and also our booker, introduced us to Smoke Signals Studio. And as Markel is a true gifted/talented artist, very cool and nice, always working fast and good, always listening to the wishes of the people he works with, we hired him for the cover of our album, but also for the booklet inside the vinyls and Cds, and we are still working with him for tour posters, etc.

Working with Clive Martin as a producer, famous for his analogue recording, must have been wonderful. Personally, I think it's the best way to record an album. The sound gains originality, naturalness and gives you an idea of what the band's show is like. How was it recorded like this?

First, you need to be ready for this way of recording. You cannot try to record something for ever, like in numeric process, because the tape is damaging when you use it, and you have room only for quite a few tracks (24 in our case). So no space for 15 tracks of lead vocal and you chose at the end of the day which one you prefer the best, you sing it well or you erase your take and try to do better… but when it’s gone, it’s gone ! Also there is no computer in the control room, it’s really soothing for eyes and the brain. And when you take the tape in your hands, it’s like you’re touching the songs, it’s not only a file on your computer, that’s a funny thing

Recently a band has emerged that receives many opinions. We're talking about Greta Van Fleet. What opinion do you have about this band? How much marketing and how much originality?

They are quite talented and gifted young musicians that's for sure, but for now it's clearly too much inspired by Led Zeppelin, they sound almost like a cover band really ... Maybe they've come to be famous too early, and they needed more time to create something more personal, so let's see what there next LP will bring this time

I would like you to tell us the first thing you think when I tell you these bands or styles of music:

Led Zeppelin: Our first and greatest (musical) common point !

The Doors: One of our shamanic inspiration about live energy ! And certainly top 5 of the greatest bands ever ...

Janis Joplin: The queen of rock'n'roll, the most soulful female singer that as ever existed ...

Tool: they come from outta space, they have access to a place where nobody else can go with a risk of no return … and there are great by the way !

AC/DC: also in the top 5 of the greatest bands ever, everything on AC/DC has been already said, we can just say again that they play raw Rock N Roll like nobody else, they are living legends.

You come to Spain with 7 shows throughout Spain, you return to France and then UK. After the summer, is there any idea for a new album?

Yes there is, actually it has been already recorded this winter in France, at Black Box Studio with Clive Martin again. We are now working on the mixes, running order, cover, name, etc, so stay tune, there will be more news in the forthcoming months !

You will be in Spain this month and I wish you all the best. What do you expect from this tour in Spain?

Thank you so much ! Nothing else but People to come at our shows, and to be touched by our music and (most of all) by our energy and message ! Oh and not to have engine's problem !

Thank you very much for your time and for the interview. Keep it up and thanks for keeping the real rock alive.
