DOLLAR LLAMA - Entrevista con Tiago Simões
Una de las mejores bandas portuguesas de Hard Rock y Stoner, Dollar Llama, estará de gira por nuestro país de la mano de Lestrato Rock.

Desde TNT Radio Rock hemos tenido la oportunidad de preguntar al cantante Tiago Simões un poco por la banda en general, inicios, momentos del grupo, sobre su último trabajo "Juggernaut" y futuro cercano de Dollar Llama.
Muchas gracias por tener un hueco para nosotros y por seguir manteniendo el stoner vivo. Hace 10 años desde “Under The Hurricane”, vuestro primer debut (antes ya lanzasteis el EP “Revolution FM”), ¿cómo de duro es sacar adelante una banda como Dollar Llama justo en la crisis financiera?
Bueno, supongo que como todas las bandas hacen ... ¡Perseverancia, y una actitud de hazlo por ti mismo! Hoy en día, las bandas solo pueden sobrevivir por sus medios y por su capacidad de mostrar su trabajo lo mejor que pueden. En nuestro caso, siempre tuvimos esto realmente impregnado en el fondo de nuestra mente, y tenemos la suerte de que todos los miembros de la banda tienen habilidades que ayudan a promocionar nuestros discos y música. Soy un diseñador, así que hago todos los grafismos dentro de nuestra banda, nuestro bajista es un director de cine, así que todos nuestros videos están hechos con él, nuestro guitarrista es un artista del tatuaje y un técnico de sonido, nuestro baterista es una mezcla de electricista y manitas, y nuestro otro guitarrista ayuda con toda la logística y material necesario para las actuaciones... así que todos estamos muy cómodos en medio de la crisis financiera ¡jajaja!
Estuvisteis en el concierto de John García en Lisboa junto a Stonerust y Stone Dead. Supongo que fue un gran premio después de tanto cambio en 2013 y 2014. ¿Cómo recordáis aquella noche?
Fue una buena noche para nosotros, porque estábamos tocando con un tío que es una institución de la escena stoner, por lo que nos sentimos muy felices y orgullosos de ser "elegidos" para abrir es su show, pero fue al mismo tiempo un poco de sentimientos agridulces porque fue el último concierto realizado con nuestro baterista actual en ese momento, Andre Hencleeday ... El día anterior al concierto, nos dijo que dejaba la banda para dedicarse a sus proyectos personales (Andre es un músico en el Conservatorio de Música de Lisboa, también toca piano y otros instrumentos), y sabíamos que después del concierto teníamos que apresurarnos para conseguir un nuevo baterista ... y así fue como Pedro (nuestro baterista actual) se unió a la banda. Pero puedo decir que la noche fue realmente reveladora en una cuestión de temas/preguntas con respecto a nuestra banda.
Hablamos de “Juggernaut”. Salió hace un año y ya es mucho tiempo para hacer un balance. ¿Cómo ha sido el 2017 y 2018 con vuestro último lanzamiento?
2017 fue bueno porque fue un año que nos permitió afilar algunos bordes relacionados con nuestro sonido e intensificar nuestro acercamiento al nuevo álbum "Juggernaut". Tocamos varias veces y eso creó una buena consistencia alrededor de nuestra banda y sonido.
Entramos al estudio para grabar el álbum con total confianza en lo que queríamos y lo que debíamos hacer, y eso quedó reflejado después de que lo sacáramos. Con este álbum tocamos aún más, y tuvimos que ir a lugares que nunca pensamos, como Vagos Metal Fest. Este álbum realmente nos abrió muchas puertas y es más bien recibido que nuestro anterior "Grand Union". ¡Ha sido todo un gran año para nosotros!
El álbum es muy diferente a “Under The Hurricane” y un poco menos obviamente a “Grand Union”. Ahora con “Juggernaut” es puro desierto, carretera, calor y sudor. Además que los cambios en la banda en su trayectoria habrán dado nuevas influencias. ¿Cómo surgió “Juggernaut”?
Desde el primer día supimos que el álbum tenía que ser más "cohesivo y equilibrado" y también sabíamos que la afinación tenía que ser más baja pero más melódica que "Grand Union"; "Grand Union" fue más crudo, más agresivo y más abrasivo, y "Juggernaut" es más grande/épico, más melódico, más ambiental, más equilibrado ... Ambos tienen nuestra identidad, pero tienen diferentes sonidos, ¡con diferentes conceptos!
Sabíamos que "Juggernaut" no iba a ser un disco tan "directo/fácil" cuando se escuchara en comparación con "Grand Union". Esto es más un trabajo de descubrimiento, un tipo de trabajo del que solo tendrás es un concepto/musicalidad cuando lo escuchas varias veces ... Y este tipo de discos son los mejores, porque no te desgastan después de algunas escuchas y tienen que quedarse en tu cabeza por muchos años.
Este último álbum me hace feliz cuando lo escucho y en especial canciones como “Bocanegra”, “Knucklehead” o “Misery”. ¡Parecéis de California! Enhorabuena por el álbum. ¿Podéis hablarme de “Bocanegra”? Me encanta el bajo especialmente aquí.
¡Jajajaja Muchas gracias! ¡Es bueno escuchar cosas bonitas sobre nuestra música y definitivamente queríamos ser de California!
Bueno, "Bocanegra" será nuestro próximo single, y la canción en sí es como "Dr. Jekyll se encuentra con el Sr. Hyde", o para que la gente entienda que tiene dos sentimientos diferentes.
Los versos son muy agresivos con arrogancia con un golpe asesino del bajo que lo hace más orgánico (Mr. Hyde), pero los coros son melódicos y épicos (Dr. Jekyll). La canción trata sobre una situación entre dos personas, cuando una se compromete a morir por enfermedad y la otra no tiene ninguna esperanza de saber que su amigo va a morir y no hay nada que puedas hacer al respecto ... Por eso la canción se llama "Bocanegra”, una boca fría y negra con labios negros de muerte.
Escribí la letra hace mucho tiempo, pero el día antes de comenzar a colocar las líneas vocales en el disco, Chris Cornell murió y adapté algunas de las palabras de ese día para que coincidieran con lo que todos éramos. sintiendo ese tiempo. Y fue raro porque estaba grabando la pista vocal y el productor (en una sección de una canción) me dijo que mi voz tenía el mismo tono que tenía Chris y que mi voz sonaba casi como la suya... Todos teníamos carne de gallina y mirándonos el uno al otro, como si hubiera aterrizado allí... ¡Jajaja!
"Juggernaut" en sí mismo tiene citas de personas que amamos y que ya no están con nosotros, y es por eso que el disco está dedicado a varios músicos que murieron recientemente, como Scott Weiland de Stone Temple Pilots, o Lemmy de Motorhead.
Hablando de “Nails”, el videoclip es una maravilla. Dios dando la inmortalidad y dos personas experimentando el éxtasis hasta ver a Dios. Un buen día de grabación y ninguna sardina fuera herida en la grabación, hahaha. ¿De qué habla “Nails” y cómo surge la idea del videoclip?
"Nails" habla sobre nuestra fe en la religión, y cómo la civilización depende de ello. Soy ateo, así que no creo en la religión, y en esta canción hablo cómo seguir al "hijo del hombre" y no al "Hijo de Dios ", un hombre como otro, hecho de sangre, eso es real, pero que la gente pretende glorificarlo casi para alcanzar la inmortalidad.
Nos hemos convertido en prisioneros de estos actos de fe y la canción muestra a las masas manipuladas por esto, declinando en guerras, líderes de culto, fanáticos, etc. El tema es bastante intenso, así que tuvimos la idea de bromear al respecto, y nuestro bajista Dinis, habló con dos conocidos cómicos de Portugal para aparecer en el video. Queríamos tener un video como el de Red Fang, diciendo cosas malas y emotivas pero con un toque divertido y divertido.
Antes os di las gracias por mantener el stoner vivo y es que, aunque hay muchas bandas que siguen con ello, sobretodo en Holanda, Bélgica, Dinamarca…, ¿Cómo veis el stoner en Europa? Ahora que golpeas una piedra y salen 1.000 bandas de metal…
Mientras haya gente que escarbe y conserve la escena, siempre habrá más bandas de stoner.
La música se ejecuta en ciclos y, a veces, te encuentras más en una escena de hip metal y en otras, estás de vuelta en la escena psicodélica de los 70. Esa es la naturaleza y el flujo de trabajo de la música siempre en círculo. Nunca sabrás qué escena o tendencia será la siguiente.
Creo que Stoner en Europa tiene más y más fans porque es un género que combina influencias de varios lugares y escenas, que crea lealtad. Cuando tengas eso, la música durará más y más, y la música comercial de hoy en día es muy efímera, dejando un pequeño rastro en la memoria del oyente, por lo que es fácil recordar en unos pocos años que la banda no es tan buena como el hipeado artista de la escena comercial.
Supongo que ya estamos con los últimos conciertos de “Juggernaut”, ¿cómo tenéis el próximo año? ¿Hay ya alguna música nueva lista?
Ya tenemos varias fechas confirmadas en Portugal en 2019 (shows y festivales), nos dirigiremos a Alemania el próximo mes de julio para participar en un gran festival (The Hardcore Help Foundation Summerfest en Halver) y algunas fechas más, y ¡estamos planeando para comenzar a grabar el nuevo disco después del verano!. ¡A ver si todo encaja dentro de nuestros horarios y si todo funciona bien dentro del calendario! ¡Creo que será un gran año para nosotros!
Venís a España para 6 conciertos durante la próxima semana. ¿Tenemos en España los oídos preparados para el stoner? ¿Cómo veis el público español para Dollar Llama?
Realmente no sé, jajajaja. Es una cultura diferente, con raíces diferentes (aunque seamos fuertes, somos muy cercanos), pero por lo que nuestra agencia de booking nos dijo, a la gente de España le gusta más el rock and roll y esperamos poder ver eso en nuestros shows.
Se nos ha dicho que las personas en tu país son más efusivas, más entusiastas, y realmente lo compro porque eso sólo nos ayuda en nuestro rendimiento sobre el escenario. 😉 Una cosa es segura, nadie se quedará indiferente por nuestra actuación.
Nuestros conciertos son realmente un caos. ¡Nunca sabrás lo que va a pasar en un concierto de Dollar Llama! ¡Cualquier cosa que puedas hacer como una invasión al escenario, surfear entre la gente, bailar en el foso o simplemente menear sin parar la cabeza, lo pasarás realmente bien! ¡Es una gran fiesta con esteroides! ¡Creo que nuestro mejor activo son las actuaciones en vivo! ¡Jajajajaja!
Si tendremos que explicar al público que todavía no han escuchado a Dollar Llama, cómo sois en directo, ¿cómo lo haríais?
Imagina una mezcla del sonido rock de los años noventa con el ambiente de sludge/southern/stoner, con la actitud y la buena sensación de Suicidal Tendencies. ¡Eso es un conciertro de Dollar Llama! 😉

Thank you very much for having time for us and for keeping the stoner alive. Ten years ago from "Under The Hurricane", your first debut (before you released the EP "Revolution FM”), How hard is it to make a band like Dollar Llama right in the financial crisis?
Well I guess like all bands do… Perseverance, and a DIY attitude! Bands nowadays can only survive by their means and by their capacity of showing off their work, the best that they can. In our case we always had this really impregnated in the back of our mind, and we are fortunate that all the members of the band have skills that help in promoting our records and music. I’m a designer so I do all the graphics within our band, our bassist is a film director, so all our videos are made with him, our guitarist is a tattoo artist and sound tech, our drummer is a mix of electrician/do it all, and our other guitarist helps out with all the logistics and material needed to perform... So we are all very confortable in the middle of the financial crisis ahaha!
You were at the John Garcia show in Lisbon with Stonerust and Stone Dead. I guess it was a great prize after so much change in 2013 and 2014. How do you remember that night?
It was a good night for us, because we were playing with a guy that is an institution of the stoner scene, so that made us very happy and proud to be “elected” to open up is show, but it was at the same time a little bit of sour/sweet feelings because it was the last concert made with our current drummer at the time Andre Hencleeday… I told us the day before the concert that he was leaving the band to dedicate to his personal projects ( Andre is a musician at the Lisbon Conservatory of Music, and plays also Piano and other instruments ), and we knew that after the concert we had to hurry to get a new drummer… and that was howe Pedro ( our current drummer ) joined the band. But I can say that night was a really eye opener in a matter of subjects/questions regarding our band.
We talk about "Juggernaut". It came out a year ago and it's already a long time to do a general review. How was 2017 and 2018 with your last release?
2017 was good because it was a year that permitted us to “sharp” some edges relating our sound, and to intensify our approach to the new album “Juggernaut”. We’ve played several times and that built a good consistency around our band and sound.
We entered the studio to record the album with full confidence in what we wanted and what we were supposed to do and that came reflected after we released it. With this album we played even more, and we got to go to places that we never thought, like Vagos Metal Fest. This album really opened a lot of doors to us and it’s more well received than our previous one “Grand Union”. It has been quite a year to us!
The album is very different from "Under The Hurricane" and a little less obviously "Grand Union". Now with "Juggernaut" it is pure desert, road, heat and sweat. In addition that the changes in the band in their trajectory will have given new influences. How did "Juggernaut" come about?
Since day one we knew the album had to be more “cohese and balanced” and we knew also that the tuning had to be lower but more melodic than “Grand Union”; “Grand Union” was more raw, more agressive, and more abrasive, and “Juggernaut” is more big/epic, more melodic, more environmental, more balanced… They both have our identity, but they have different sounds, with different concepts!
We knew “Juggernaut” wasan’t going to be such a “direct/easy” record when listened compared with “Grand Union”. This is more a record of “discovery”, a kind of record that you only will get is concept/musicality when listened several times… And these kind of records for me are the best, because they don’t wear you out after some listenings and they got to stick in your head for manny years.
This last album makes me happy when I listen to it and especially songs like "Bocanegra", "Knucklehead" or "Misery". You seem to come from California! Congratulations for the album. Can you talk to me about "Bocanegra"? I love bass especially here.
Ahhahahah thank you so much! Is good to hear nice things about our music,music, and we definitely wanted to be from California!
Well “Bocanegra” is going to be our next single, and the song itself is like "Dr. Jekyll meets Mr .Hyde”, or for people to understand it has two different feelings…
The verses are very aggressive with swagger with a killer punch from the bass making it more organic ( Mr. Hyde ), but the choruses are melodic and epic ( Dr. Jekyll ). The song deals with a situation between two persons, when one is committed to death by illness an the other is hopeless knowing that his friend is going to die and there is nothing you can do about it… That’s why the song is called “Bocanegra=Black mouth”, a black cold mouth with black lips of death.
I’ve wrote the lyrics a long time ago, but the day before I was beginning to lay the vocal tracks on the record, Chris Cornell died and I’ve adapted some of the words on that day, to match what all of us were feeling that time. And it was weird because I was recording the vocal track and the producer ( on a section of a song ) told me that my voice had the exact same pitch as Chris had and that my voice sounded almost like his… We all had goosebumps and look each other, like if he had landed there… Ahaha!
“Juggernaut” itself has very appointments to people that we loved and that are not with us anymore, and that’s why the record is dedicated to several musicians that died recently like Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots, or Lemmy from Motorhead.
Speaking of "Nails", the video clip is a wonder. God giving immortality and two people experiencing the trance until they see God. A good day of recording and no sardines were wounded in the recording, hahaha. What does "Nails" speak about and how does the idea of the video clip come about?
“Nails” speaks about our faith in religion, and how civilisation depends on it… I’m an atheist so I don’t believe in religion, and in this song I speak how to follow the “son of man” and not the “son of God”, a man like other, made of blood, that is real, but that people intend to glorify it almost to reach immortality…
We’ve become prisoners of this “acts of faith” and the song shows the masses being manipulated by this, declining in wars, cult/fanatic leaders etc… The subject is pretty intense, so we had the idea to joke about it, and our bassist Dinis, talked with two well known comedians from Portugal to enter the video. We wanted to have a video like Red Fang does, saying bad/emotive things but with a twist/fun feeling.
Before I said thank you for keeping the stoner alive and that, although there are many bands that continue with it, especially in Holland, Belgium, Denmark... How do you see the stoner in Europe? Now that you hit a stone and 1,000 metal bands come out ...
As long as there people who dig and preserve the scene, there will always be more stoner bands…
Music runs in cycles and sometimes you are more in a hip metal scene and others you are back in a 70’s psychedelic scene… Thats the nature and workflow of music always running in circle you’ll never know what scene or trend is next…
I think stoner in Europe has more, and more fans because it’s a genre that mixes influences of several places and scenes, that create loyalty. When you have that, the music will endure longer and longer, and the commercial music nowadays is very ephemeral, leaving a small trace in the memory of the audience, so it’s easy to remember in a few years that stoner band and not the “hyped/trendy” artist of the commercial scene.
I guess we are already with the last shows of "Juggernaut", how do you have next year? Is there any new music ready?
We already have several dates in 2019 in Portugal confirmed ( shows and festivals ), we’re heading to Germany next July to play on a great festival ( The Hardcore Help Foundation Summerfest in Halver ) and a few more dates, and we’re planning to begin recording the new album after the summer!. Let’s see if all fits inside our timmings and if all works well around the schedule! I think it will be a great year for us!
You come to Spain for 6 shows during the next week. Do we have our ears ready for the stoner in Spain? How do you see the Spanish audience for Dollar Llama?
Really dont know ahahahaha…, it’s a different culture, with different roots ( even tough we are so close ), but for what our managemnet agency told us, people from Spain do like more rock and roll and we hope that we can see that in our shows.
We’ve been said that people in your country are more effusive, more enthusiastic, and I really dig that because only helps our performance on stage! 😉 One thing is for sure, no one will be unaffected by our performance.
Our concerts are truly havoc.. LOL… You’ll never know what is going to happen, on a Dollar Llama show! Whatever you can do a stage invasion, surf among people, dance in the pit, or simply headbanging, you’ll have a really good time!I It’s a big party on steroids! I think our best asset is really the live performances!! Ahahah!
If we will have to explain to the audience that they have not yet listened to Dollar Llama, how are you live, how would you do it?
Imagine mixing the rock sound of the nineties with the sludge/southern/stoner environment, with the attitude and good vibe of Suicidal Tendencies. That is a Dollar Llama show! 😉
