CRYSTAL VIPER; Marta Gabriel "...pensé que nunca podría volver a cantar." (Ripollet Rock 2017)
La banda polaca CRYSTAL VIPER se encuentra en plena gira de presentación de su sexto trabajo de estudio, "Queen of the Witches" editado después de un parón forzado de cuatro años debido a los graves problemas de salud de su cantante Marta Gabriel, afortunadamente ya pasados, y llegan dispuestos a conquistar al público español.
Nos visitarán el próximo día 25 de Agosto con motivo del Ripollet Rock y hemos aprovechado para charlar con su guitarrista y cantante, Marta Gabriel, sobre el pasado, presente y futuro de la banda.

Crystal Viper es una banda polaca, Polonia es un país del que no recibimos muchas noticias de bandas de metal, a excepción de las de metal extremo. ¿Qué nos puedes contar de la escena metal polaca?
Polonia siempre ha tenido una inclinación al metal extremo, incluso en los años 80 solo teníamos algunas bandas que tocaban Metal Clásico, y muchísimas bandas tocaban Thrash. Todo el mundo conoce a nuestras bandas como Vader o Behemoth. Evidentemente yo no tengo problemas con esto, la verdad es que soy una gran fan de muchas bandas de metal extremo también. De alguna manera el metal tradicional siempre ha sido menos popular, y muy frecuentemente ignorado o se han reído de él. Pero recientemente he notado que esto está empezando a cambiar. Hay un puñado de buenas bandas jóvenes aquí, como por ejemplo Axe Crazy y Roadhog, así que cruzo mis dedos por ellas.
Habeis editado vuestro ultimo album “Queen of the Witches” después de cuatro años de parón debito a problemas de salud, ¿es así? ¿Estás bien de salud ahora?
Es verdad, casi cuatro años – no habíamos planeado un parón tan largo. Fuimos una banda hiperactiva entre 2007 y 2013 – durante 6 años – realizamos 5 álbumes de estudio, 7 singles y recopilatorios, y estuvimos en gira por 15 países. En 2013 yo tuve serios problemas de salud, dudaba si podría seguir cantando, y tuvimos que parar con Crystal Viper. Sufrí una cirugía, que afortunadamente fue bien. No había otra posibilidad, ya sabes, yo amo la música, es toda mi vida, así que decidí hacer todo lo que fuera posible para cantar otra vez, y aquí estoy, con este nuevo álbum y lista para patear algunos traseros durante nuestros próximos conciertos. Y para ser honesta, mi voy ahora estás más fuerte que nunca antes, puedo oírlo y sentirlo, al contrario que en “Possession”. No puedo oír este álbum, es como si oyera que estaba intentándolo muy duro y sufrí durante las sesiones de grabación. Sé que la gente no quiere oírlo, pero lo digo. Grabar las voces para “Possession” fue también una lucha, como “¿podré terminar o no?”, afortunadamente ahora todo es correcto, y cada día espero el próximo concierto.
Explícanos algo sobre “Queen of the Witches”, ¿Qué diferencias hay entre este y los otros álbumes de Crystal Viper?
Pienso que “Queen of the Witches” no difiere mucho de nuestros anteriores álbumes, es un álbum de Heavy Metal. Con mucha frecuencia nuestros fans o amigos nos dicen que ven direrencias entre nuestros álbumes, y cada uno de ellos es un poco diferente. Para mi es difícil notar estas cosas, cuando escribo música, todo fluye de manera natural. No estoy tratando de cambiar el estilo. No me esfuerzo en componer algo diferente. Puedo ver que cada disco refleja un periodo distinto de mi vida, diferentes inspiraciones, y probablemente también diferentes habilidades. Como he mencionado antes, si tú eres un artista, tú vives y aprendes, aun desarrollas tus habilidades, y también buscas nuevas inspiraciones. Pero lo que es más importante, pienso, es que yo compongo la música que quiero oír.
Este album fue editado el pasado mes de febrero, ¿Qué objetivos teníais? ¿Los habéis alcanzado?
Ya sabes, después de publicar el álbum tú siempre deseas tocarlo en tantos conciertos como sea posible, para presentar tu nueva música a la gente y a los fans.
“Queen of the Witches” es el album debut para vuestro Nuevo bajista Blaze J. Grygiel. Por qué habéis cambiado de bajista y dinos algo de Blaze.
Cuando estuvimos 4 años parados, nuestro anterior bajista, Michal, decidió enfocarse en su trabajo y estudios, y nos dijo que dejaba la música completamente y no quería tocar más el bajo. Somos aun amigos y mantenemos el contacto, y actualmente fue él el que trajo un nuevo bajista a la banda. Michal y Blazej son muy buenos amigos.
Tocareis en el Ripollet Rock el día 25 de Agosto. Nunca he visto a Crystal Viper en directo. ¿Qué puedo esperar de vuestro show?
Tocaremos muchas canciones de nuestro último álbum “Queen of the Witches” pero también podrás oír muchas otras canciones de nuestros discos previos. Daremos lo mejor de nosotros y disfrutaremos mucho en el escenario, como siempre. Puedes esperar un potente ataque de Heavy Metal.
¿Qué pensáis del Ripollet Rock y de iniciativas como esta (festivales gratuitos)?
La música tendría que traer felicidad a la gente, y si lo hace, no puede ser mejor así que, ¡Yeah, grandes pulgares arriba!
¿Qué conocéis del Ripollet Rock y cuales son vuestras expectativas sobre esto?
He visto algunos videos en youtube, y el festival parece fantástico, nosotros realmente no podemos esperar para conoceros tíos. ¿Cuáles son nuestras expectativas? Disfrutar, dar lo mejor de nosotros en el escenario y encontrarnos con nuestros amigos y fans. También hemos planeado visitar Barcelona otra vez, ir a la playa y nadar en el mar, y comer un montón de vuestra comida. España es uno de esos países que siempre tendrá un lugar especial en nuestros corazones.
¿Que opinión teneis del cartel del festival con Jaded Heart, Loudness y dos bandas locales como Rising Core y Regresion?
Es grande. Y será un gran placer encontrarnos con los chicos de Loudness otra vez, porque tocaremos con ellos la próxima semana en la República Checa.
¿Podremos ver más fechas de Crystal Viper en España pronto?
Verdaderamente espero que sí, porque los metaleros españoles siempre han apoyado a Crystal Viper mucho, tenemos un montón de amigos en vuestro país, y nos encantaría tocar más para vosotros tíos!
¿En qué momento se encuentra la Carrera de Crystal Viper? ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes de futuro?
Actualmente estamos centrados en promocionar “Queen of the Witches” y planeamos y deseamos tocar tantos conciertos como sea posible. Esto es lo más importante en este momento.

Crystal Viper is a polish band; Poland is a country that we haven’t much news about heavy metal bands excepting extreme ones. What can you tell us about polish metal scene?
Poland always had extreme Metal oriented scene, even in the '80s we had just few bands playing Classic Metal, and a lot of bands that played Thrash. Everyone knows our bands such as Vader or Behemoth. Of course I have no problem with that, as the truth is I'm a big fan of many extreme Metal bands as well. Somehow traditional Metal always been less popular, and very often even ignored or laughed at over here, but I recently noticed it started to change. There are few cool young bands over here, like for example Axe Crazy and Roadhog, so I keep my fingers crossed for them.
You edited your last album “Queen Of The Witches” after a 4 years break due your health problems, isn’t it? Is her health ok now?
That’s true, almost 4 years - we didn't plan such a long break. We were a hyperactive band, between 2007 and 2013 - so during 6 years - we released 5 studio albums, 7 singles and compilations, and we toured in 15 countries. In 2013 I faced serious problems with my health, my singing was under question mark, and we had to stop with Crystal Viper. But I underwent surgery, which thankfully went good. There was no other way, you know, I love music, it’s my whole life, so I decided to do everything to be able to sing again, and here I am, with this new album, and ready to kick some asses during the forthcoming concerts! And to be honest, right now my voice is stronger than ever before, I can hear and feel that, opposite to the "Possession" album. I can’t listen to that one, as I hear that I was trying very hard and I suffered during the recording session. I know that people don't hear that, but I do. Recording vocals for "Possession" was also a fight, like "will I finish or not?". Thankfully right now everything is fine, and every time I can’t wait for the forthcoming liveshow!
Tell us about “Queen of the Witches”, what differences are between it and the other Crystal Viper albums?
I think that "Queen of the Witches" doesn’t differ from our previous albums that much, as it’s still a Heavy Metal album. Very often fans or friends tell us that they see differences between our albums, and each one of them is a little bit different. For me it's hard to notice such things, as when I write music, it all comes out very natural. I'm not trying to change the style; I don’t force myself to compose something different. I can say that each album reflects different period of my life, different inspirations, and probably also a little bit different skills. As I mentioned before, if you’re an artist, you live and learn, you still develop your skills, and you still find new inspirations. But what is most important I think, I compose music that I want to listen.
This album was edited past February, what objectives did you have about it and have you got them?
You know, after releasing the album you always hope to play as many live shows as possible, to present your new music to the people and metalfans.
“Queen of Witches” is the debut album for your new bassist Blaze J. Grygiel. Why did you change your bass player and tell us anything about Blaze.
When we had this 4 yearlong break, our previous bassist, Michal, decided to focus on his job and studies, and told us that he’s out of music completely, and won’t play bass guitar anymore. We're still friends and we keep in touch, and actually it's him who brought the new bassist to the band - Michal and Blazej are very good friends.
You’re gonna play at Ripollet Rock on August 25th. I’ve never seen Crystal Viper live before. What can I wait about your show?
We will play many songs from our latest album “Queen of the Witches”, but you’ll hear also many other songs from our previous albums. We will give our best, and we’re gonna have a lot of fun on stage, as always! You can expect a powerful heavy metal attack!
What do you think about Ripollet Rock and the initiatives like that (free festivals)?
Music should bring happiness to the people, and if it does, it can’t be better! So yeah, big thumbs up!
What do you know about Ripollet Rock and what are your expectations about it?
I’ve seen some videos on youtube, and the festival looks fantastic! We really, really can’t wait to meet with you guys! What are our expectations? To have fun, to give our best on stage and to meet with our friends and fans. We also plan to visit Barcelona again, go to the beach and swim in the sea, and eat a lot of your food. Spain is one of those countries that will always have a special place in our hearts.
What is your opinion about the line up on this festival with Jaded Heart, Loudness and two local bands such Rising Core and Regresion?
It’s great. And it will be also nice to meet with guys from Loudness again, as we play with them next week in Czech Republic.
Could we see more Crystal Viper dates in Spain soon?
I truly hope so, because Spain Metal fans always supported Crystal Viper a lot, we have a lot of friends in your country, and we would love to play more for you guys!
What’s the actual point in Crystal Viper’s career? What are your future plans?
We currently focus on promoting "Queen Of The Witches" and we plan and hope to play as many concerts as possible. This is most important at the moment.
