AYDAN (Elvenking); Brujería. Rituales, bosques y magia; todo eso podéis esperar. Entrevista especial Leyendas Del Rock

A pocos días de Leyendas Del Rock nos ponemos en contacto con los italianos ELVENKING, que ya tienen casi listo su octavo trabajo de estudio. De la mano de su guitarra Aydan repasamos la actualidad de la banda, el presente y futuro, así como su paso por el festival.

Han pasado 3 años desde que publicasteis vuestro último trabajo “Tha Pagan Manifesto”. ¿En qué punto se encuentra la banda actualmente?
Aydan: Ya hemos completado todos los trabajos del nuevo disco y ahora vamos a estar fuera para realizar varios festivales de verano. Justo acabamos de volver del Masters of Rock de República Checa y del Dong Open Air de Alemania, y ¡nos morimos de ganas de volver a tocar en España!

Sabemos que estáis acabando vuestro nuevo álbum. ¿En qué punto se encuentra? ¿Puedes contarnos algo sobre él?
Aydan: Todo está al 100% ahora mismo. El álbum en si mismo está acabado; ahora, más o menos, debemos pensar en los bonus tracks que acompañarán las diferentes ediciones y cumplir los tiempos que nos dice la discográfica. Pero sin contar con eso, todo está acabado; desde la portada hasta las fotos pasando por el máster. El disco ha sido de nuevo una especie de reto; nuestra intención era continuar en la senda de “The Pagan Manifesto”, dado que fue un un álbum exitoso, pero al final (como de costumbre en nuestra carrera) nos ha salido algo diferente, mucho más oscuro y épico.

Este año ELVENKING celebrará 20 años. Mirando atrás en el tiempo, con 8 discos de estudio, ¿cómo ves la carrera de la banda y su evolución?
Aydan: Para ser sincero, creo que hemos recibido menos de lo que hemos dado. Me explico, en mi opinión, por la calidad de nuestra música deberíamos haber recibido un poco más. Por el otro lado, nunca hemos sido una banda con la posibilidad de girar 6 meses por año; esa fue una decisión interna nuestra. Simplemente no lo podemos hacer y por ello hemos tenido que decir que no a una gran cantidad de invitaciones para unirnos a tours bastante suculentos. Si escuchas nuestra discografía podrás encontrar fácilmente que entre álbum y álbum nuestro sonido ha cambiado, y siempre bromeamos con que somos la banda menos comercial/amigable posible: cuando debemos hacer unos movimientos específicos para ganar popularidad sacamos un disco en el camino opuesto. Pero siempre hemos buscado seguir nuestra visión artística y tocar, y grabar lo que sentimos en nuestro interior en vez de hacer lo que sería inteligente a nivel comercial.

¿Tenéis en mente alguna celebración por los 20 años?
Aydan: ¡Tenemos que pensar sobre ello! Por supuesto que con los shows para promocionar el nuevo disco pensaremos alguna manera de celebrarlo. También tenemos planes de grabar un disco especial para el año que viene, pero todavía deben permanecer ocultos todos esos planes.

¿Todavía recuerdas de tus primeras influencias? Cuando empezasteis no había tantas bandas de folk metal como hoy en día.
Aydan: Yo creo que no había escena de folk metal. Nuestra gran influencia e inspiración fue SKYCLAD, la única banda de folk/pagan metal de fuera. Buscábamos mezclar la idea de los británicos con nuestras influencias, desde el power metal melódico hasta el black y death más extremo. Así fue como el sonido de ELVENKING nació, y encuentro que es bastante singular hoy en día ya que la palabra original en el mundo de la música no existe.

¿Qué bandas de la actualidad piensas que mantienen vivo el espíritu del folk metal de hace 20 años? ¿Puedes recomendarnos alguna de ellas?
Aydan: ¡Por supuesto! ¡ELVEKING (risas)! Para ser sincero no sigo demasiado la auto-llamada escena musical del folk metal. Yo toco este tipo de música y lo hago de la manera que a nosotros nos gusta escuchar de una banda ya que, en mis oídos, es la perfecta mezcla al tocar, grabar y poder interpretar en vivo todos los álbumes. Generalmente prefiero escuchar otro tipo de metal, desde el power al black. Obviamente hay algunas bandas muy buenas de folk metal pero no quiero recomendar una por encima de otra.

Estáis en el cartel del Leyendas del Rock de este año. ¿Qué referencias teníais de él? ¿Qué os supone estar en él?
Aydan: ¡El cartel del festival es simplemente impresionante! ¡Definitivamente uno de los mejores del mundo! ¿Dónde encuentras a todas esas increíbles bandas en un simple lugar? ¡Va a ser impresionante!

¿Cómo será el concierto en el Leyendas? ¿Tenéis algo en mente?
Aydan: ¡Bueno seguro! Vamos a tratar de dar lo mejor al público con uno de nuestros shows y con suerte a la gente le encantará.

¿Tocaréis alguna canción nueva?
Aydan: No, todavía no. Es demasiado pronto. Justo hemos acabado de grabar y por ejemplo, todavía no sabemos que canciones usaremos como singles o vídeos. Preferimos tocar canciones conocidas de nuestros discos anteriores.

Para acabar, ¿qué mensaje daríais a la gente que os verá en el Leyendas?
Aydan: Ha pasado un tiempo desde nuestra última actuación en España así que ya era el momento de ir volviendo. España e Italia son países bastante similares y será como estar en casa.

¿Y para los fans que están esperando el nuevo álbum?
Aydan: Esperad algo tan épico como el infierno, glorioso y oscuro. Esta vez, hemos explorado nuestro lado más oscuro y sombrío. Brujería. Rituales, bosques y magia; todo eso podéis esperar.

3 years have passed since your last work “The Pagan Manifesto”. In what point is the band now?
We have just completed the works on our new album. Now we are out for some summer festivals. We have just returned home from Masters of Rock in Czech Republic and Dong Open Air in Germany, and we are looking forward to return in Spain!

I saw in your facebook that you are finishing your new work. In what level is now? What can you tell me about him?
Everything is 100% ready now. The album itself is completed, we need to maybe think about some bonus material to be added for special editions or similar, but we need to wait for inputs from our record company about. Beside this all the things around the new album are 100% done, from the cover to the photos, from the layouts to the master obviously.
The new album will be once again something challenging. Our plan was to continue on the path of “The Pagan Manifesto”, since it was a really successful album, but in the end, as usual in all our carrier, we have come out with something once again different, much more obscure and epic.

This year ELVENKING will celebrate 20 years. Looking back in the time, with 8 studio cd's, how do you see the career of the band and his evolution?
To be sincere I think we had back less than what we have given. I mean,in my opinion for the quality of the music proposed we should have received back a bit more. On the other side we have never been the band with the possibility to tour 6 months per year. This was our internal decision. We simply cannot do it and we were forced to decline a lot of invitations to join big tour with big acts.
If you listen to our complete discography you can easily find out how our sound has changed from album to album, and we always joke telling we are the less commercial-friendly band possible: when we should have done some specific moves to gain popularity we have come out with an album going in the opposite direction. But we have always wanted to follow our artistic visions and play and record the music we felt instead of looking to what should have been clever and commercially intelligent doing.

Are you having in mind one celebration for the 20 years of band?
We have to think about! For sure with the live shows supporting the new album we will think about something special to celebrate it. Also, we have the plan to record a special album next year, but this is still a secret plan.

Do you still remember your first influences? When you started didn't exist many bands of folk metal like today
I believe there was no folk metal scene at all. Our biggest influence and inspiration was Skyclad, the one and only folk/pagan metal band or so called out there. We wanted to mix the idea of the Brits with our influences from melodic power metal and more extreme black and death metal. This is where the Elvenking sound was born, and I find it pretty unique still nowadays, even the word original in music does not exist at all.

Which bands of the actuality you think that they have the same spirit of folk metal of 20 years ago? Can you recommend one of them?
Sure! ELVENKING! Ahahah! No to be sincere I do not follow the so-called folk-metal scene that much to be sincere. I play this kind of music and we do it the way we would like to really hear from a band to listen to, so in my ears the perfect mix is the one we play and we record in the albums and we play live. So generally I prefer to listen to other types of metal, from power to black. Obviously, there are some very cool folk-metal bands out there but I do not want to recommend one instead of another one ?

You are in the lineup of Leyendas del Rock festival of that year. How references have you about him? What does it suppose be there?
Oh man, the line up of the festival is something amazing! Defintely one of the best in the world! Where do you find all these amazing abnds playing together in one single location? It will be awesome!

How will be the gig in Leyendas? Are you having some in mind?
Well let’s see! We will try our best in giving the audience one of our shows and hopefully the crowd will love it!

Will you play some new songs?
No, not yet. It is too early. We have just finished the recordings and we do not even know which songs will be used as “singles” or videos for example. We prefer to give some known songs from our released albums.

For finish, what message would send to people that you will see in Leyendas
It's been a while since our last gigs in Spain so it was definitely time to return here! Obviously Spain and Italy are pretty similar countries so it will be like feeling home .

And for the fans that they are waiting the new album?
Expect something epic as hell, glorious and obscure. I guess this time we have explored our darker and more gloomy side this time. Witchery, rituals, woods and magic. You can expect this.
